The Problem of Analogical Inference in Inductive Logic
We consider one problem that was largely left open by Rudolf Carnap in his
work on inductive logic, the problem of analogical inference. After discussing
some previous attempts to solve this problem, we propose a new solution that is
based on the ideas of Bruno de Finetti on probabilistic symmetries. We explain
how our new inductive logic can be developed within the Carnapian paradigm of
inductive logic-deriving an inductive rule from a set of simple postulates

Representing Conversations for Scalable Overhearing
Open distributed multi-agent systems are gaining interest in the academic
community and in industry. In such open settings, agents are often coordinated
using standardized agent conversation protocols. The representation of such
protocols (for analysis, validation, monitoring, etc) is an important aspect of
multi-agent applications. Recently, Petri nets have been shown to be an
interesting approach to such representation, and radically different approaches
using Petri nets have been proposed. However, their relative strengths and
weaknesses have not been examined. Moreover, their scalability and suitability
for different tasks have not been addressed. This paper addresses both these
challenges. First, we analyze existing Petri net representations in terms of
their scalability and appropriateness for overhearing, an important task in
monitoring open multi-agent systems. Then, building on the insights gained, we
introduce a novel representation using Colored Petri nets that explicitly
represent legal joint conversation states and messages. This representation
approach offers significant improvements in scalability and is particularly
suitable for overhearing. Furthermore, we show that this new representation
offers a comprehensive coverage of all conversation features of FIPA
conversation standards. We also present a procedure for transforming AUML

Relational Representations in Reinforcement Learning: Review and Open Problems
This paper is about representation in RL.We discuss some of the concepts in representation and generalization in reinforcement learning and argue for higher-order representations, instead of the commonly used propositional representations. The paper contains a small review of current reinforcement learning systems using higher-order representations, followed by a brief discussion. The paper ends with research directions and open problems.\u
Promises, Impositions, and other Directionals
Promises, impositions, proposals, predictions, and suggestions are
categorized as voluntary co-operational methods. The class of voluntary
co-operational methods is included in the class of so-called directionals.
Directionals are mechanisms supporting the mutual coordination of autonomous
agents.
Notations are provided capable of expressing residual fragments of
directionals. An extensive example, involving promises about the suitability of
programs for tasks imposed on the promisee is presented. The example
illustrates the dynamics of promises and more specifically the corresponding
mechanism of trust updating and credibility updating. Trust levels and
credibility levels then determine the way certain promises and impositions are
handled.
The ubiquity of promises and impositions is further demonstrated with two
extensive examples involving human behaviour: an artificial example about an
agent planning a purchase, and a realistic example describing technology
mediated interaction concerning the solution of pay station failure related
problems arising for an agent intending to leave the parking area.Comment: 55 page
Flexibly Instructable Agents
This paper presents an approach to learning from situated, interactive
tutorial instruction within an ongoing agent. Tutorial instruction is a
flexible (and thus powerful) paradigm for teaching tasks because it allows an
instructor to communicate whatever types of knowledge an agent might need in
whatever situations might arise. To support this flexibility, however, the
agent must be able to learn multiple kinds of knowledge from a broad range of
instructional interactions. Our approach, called situated explanation, achieves
such learning through a combination of analytic and inductive techniques. It
combines a form of explanation-based learning that is situated for each
instruction with a full suite of contextually guided responses to incomplete
explanations. The approach is implemented in an agent called Instructo-Soar
that learns hierarchies of new tasks and other domain knowledge from
interactive natural language instructions. Instructo-Soar meets three key
requirements of flexible instructability that distinguish it from previous
systems: (1) it can take known or unknown commands at any instruction point;
(2) it can handle instructions that apply to either its current situation or to
a hypothetical situation specified in language (as in, for instance,
conditional instructions); and (3) it can learn, from instructions, each class

Using First Order Inductive Learning as an Alternative to a Simulator in a Game Artificial Intelligence
Currently many game artificial intelligences attempt to determine their next moves by using a simulator to predict the effect of actions in the world. However, writing such a simulator is time-consuming, and the simulator must be changed substantially whenever a detail in the game design is modified. As such, this research project set out to determine if a version of the first order inductive learning algorithm could be used to learn rules that could then be used in place of a simulator. By eliminating the need to write a simulator for each game by hand, the entire Darmok 2 project could more easily adapt to additional real-time strategy games. Over time, Darmok 2 would also be able to provide better competition for human players by training the artificial intelligences to play against the style of a specific player. Most importantly, Darmok 2 might also be able to create a general solution for creating game artificial intelligences, which could save game development companies a substantial amount of money, time, and effort.Ram, Ashwin - Faculty Mentor ; OntaĆ±Ć³n, Santi - Committee Member/Second Reade
