The intractable nature of inter-ethnic conflicts around the world has generally impacted critical developmental issues. The constant intervention by governments, international organizations, and local people over the decades has had minimum impact on the management of ethnic conflicts. This study examined the ethnic conflicts in the Northern Region of Ghana by focusing on the Bawku East Municipality ethnic conflict between the Kusasi and the Mamprusi and its impact on socio-economic development. It further examined the mediating methods used by the government over the past 20 years and the perception of local indigenes about the success of the methods. The study employed a sample size of 100 respondents to acquire primary data through the distribution of questionnaires in 6 communities Sagabo, Natinga, Sabongari, Possum, Azanga, and Gingande. The mixed research method was used to collect and analyze the data. Key findings were that Politics, Land ownership, and Chieftaincy were the key contributing factors to the Bawku East Municipality ethnic conflict in the Northern Region. To complete this, socio-economic development could be realized in Bawku East Municipality if the mediating methods recommended by the local indigenes are well executed. This approach will lessen the mistrust between the Kusasi and the Mamprusi and consequently lead to a peaceful environment that will accelerate the socio-economic development of Bawku East Municipality (BEM).A natureza intratável dos conflitos interétnicos em todo o mundo tem geralmente impactado questões críticas de desenvolvimento. This report presents the results of a qualitative assessment conducted by Breakthrough RESEARCH/Nigeria of the Advocacy Core Group (ACG) model implemented by Breakthrough ACTION/Nigeria. The goal of the study was to examine, through qualitative inquiry, the operation and potential effectiveness of the ACG model, which works through key opinion leaders and influencers to influence community-level health norms and individual behaviors, focusing specifically on the uptake of essential reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health services. Results inform Breakthrough ACTION/Nigeria’s program implementation and contribute toward the broader social and behavior change (SBC) implementation science literature surrounding the roles, effectiveness, successes, and challenges of leveraging religious and traditional leaders and social structures to improve social normative environments for health. The work further addresses issues surrounding the ACG model within the context of integrated SBC programming. Research was undertaken in two phases to provide a comprehensive and additive approach to the qualitative evaluation. Researchers sought to examine the effectiveness, success, and challenges of the ACG approach, particularly in the context of integrated SBC programming across health areas, per the approved study protocol

Beyond the health care setting:Exploring the intersections of gender, culture and religion and their influence on utilization of family planning services in Northern Nigeria

Everyday Nigeria loses about 145 women of childbearing age as a result of pregnancy related complications, making it the second largest contributor to maternal deaths globally. About 74% of these deaths could be partly averted if all women had access to services that allow them to avoid unintended pregnancies. Despite investments to improve utilization of family planning services, Nigeria’s contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR) remains low (17%), with significantly poorer coverage in North-West (6.2%). The study aimed to explore the beliefs and perceptions of lay men and women of reproductive age about family planning and how gender norms and expectations, cultural practices and religious beliefs exert influence on utilization of modern family planning services in northern Nigeria. An integrative review approach to systematic review of mixed-methods studies revealed knowledge gaps relating to the ways by which culturally assigned masculine gender roles and cultural promotion of large families in the context of extreme poverty influence women’s ability to utilize family planning services. There was also lack of a clearly-defined rational for prohibition of family planning on religious grounds. These knowledge gaps guided the design of this qualitative research. It draws on data collected through focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with 65 participants, comprising of current users and non-users of family planning services, traditional and religious leaders identified using stratified purposeful sampling. The findings suggest that culturally influenced, gendered construction and segregation of power allow men to exert control over women’s contraceptive use, though some women passively resist power imposition through covert contraceptive use to regulate their fertility. Other women decline contraception due to reliance on procreation as a means of self-empowerment where large number of children could improve marriage stability. The study also revealed cultural preference for large families, competition for children amongst co-wives, poor spousal communication that stifles women’s voices, men’s capitalization on public’s mistrust of modern contraceptives and the religiously legitimized performance of masculinity to enforce non-use of modern contraceptives despite conflicting beliefs on prohibition of permanent methods contribute to low uptake. Thus, improving CPR in northern Nigeria will require a change in policy and practice that focuses heavily on social and behaviour change communication strategies to foster long-term sustainable and normative shift in culturally and religiously influenced gender dynamics that promote practice of family planning without disempowering women

    On reconstructing Proto-Bantu grammar

    Get PDF
This book is about reconstructing the grammar of Proto-Bantu, the ancestral language at the origin of current-day Bantu languages. While Bantu is a low-level branch of Niger-Congo, the world’s biggest phylum, it is still Africa’s biggest language family. This edited volume attempts to retrieve the phonology, morphology and syntax used by the earliest Bantu speakers to communicate with each other, discusses methods to do so, and looks at issues raised by these academic endeavours. It is a collective effort involving a fine mix of junior and senior scholars representing several generations of expert historical-comparative Bantu research. It is the first systematic approach to Proto-Bantu grammar since Meeussen’s Bantu Grammatical Reconstructions (1967). Based on new bodies of evidence from the last five decades, most notably from northwestern Bantu languages, this book considerably transforms our understanding of Proto-Bantu grammar and offers new methodological approaches to Bantu grammatical reconstruction

Peacebuilding Strategies in Nigeria’s Ethnic Space: Specific Focus on Conflict-Spot in Kaduna Communities

This paper contextualised the subject matter and its strategies by providing insights on the development, peace and conflict in the Nigerian environment; explicating the peace and conflict impact assessment; exposing the causal factors for communal conflict; and analysing the strategies across the main tribes in Nigeria with specific focus on Kaduna communities. It drew largely on secondary sources whose contents were explicitly analysed for this contextual discourse. It found out that there were internal mechanisms put in place towards engendering peace building across the major tribes in Nigeria. It enlisted obtainable peacebuilding strategies in Kaduna communities. It concluded that a remarkable feature of the peace building strategies is that it does not only aim at conflict resolution, but also ensures peaceful co-existence scenes and harmonious relationships between and among conflicting people or communities. However, the latter still remains challenging owing to a low human development index and civic orientations

Cultural-linguistic practices in Palembangnese humour and directives in Indonesia : a discourse analysis

    Get PDF
This study analyses the cultural-linguistic practices of Palembangnese (a Palembang Malay language in Indonesia). In particular, it identifies and analyses the use of humour and directives as a cultural artefact-practice, seeking commonalities across three popular data sets. These three data sets comprise: (1) 10 Kelakar Bethook Palembangnese humour (KB data sets); (2) 10 Ceramah Islamic speech (IS data sets); and (3) 10 Cerito Mang Juhai Uncle Juhai stories (JS data sets). KB and IS data sets are examples of verbal humour, while the JS data sets are textual humour. All data were downloaded, transcribed, translated into English, and examined via data notations and cultural explanations. The study used mixed-methods and discourse analysis. For quantitative analysis, the data were analysed focusing on the frequency, distribution and cross-tabulation of the key characteristics, types of humour and directives, and discourse features. For qualitative analysis, the Palembangnese humour and directives were grouped based on their features. Explanations are offered as to how the humour and directives rely on local cultural knowledge for Palembangnese interlocutors. The study revealed that Palembangnese humour and directives are found in all three data sets. Jokes appear with the highest frequency in each data genre (KB, IS and JS), followed by puns and teasing. The features of Palembangnese can be maintained through translation, although this requires extensive cultural explanatory information. The use of Palembangnese directives in the three data sets shows that the role of directives in Palembangnese humour is culturally accepted and expected by the participants/speakers in the scripts/topics. Across the three genres, commands, advice and requests are the most common forms of Palembangnese directives and they function as elements of Palembangnese humour. This indicates that there exists a mutual agreement between the interlocutor and/or audience which establishes rapport, and that this rapport is contingent upon a combination of face-threatening acts, humour, and directives. Overall, it was found that Palembangnese humour and directives are, based on their respective characteristics, salient. This research, as the first to make a significant contribution to the study of humour in the Palembangnese language/culture, will help promote and preserve the distinctive nature of Islamic Malay society, and raise general awareness of Palembangnese culture. This study further shows that the tradition of joking in Palembang culture continues in contemporary Palembang society
