LCM and MCM: specification of a control system using dynamic logic and process algebra
LCM 3.0 is a specification language based on dynamic logic and process algebra, and can be used to specify systems of dynamic objects that communicate synchronously. LCM 3.0 was developed for the specification of object-oriented information systems, but contains sufficient facilities for the specification of control to apply it to the specification of control-intensive systems as well. In this paper, the results of such an application are reported. The paper concludes with a discussion of the need for theorem-proving support and of the extensions that would be needed to be able to specify real-time properties
Formal and efficient verification techniques for Real-Time UML models
The real-time UML profile TURTLE has a formal semantics expressed by translation into a timed process algebra: RT-LOTOS. RTL, the formal verification tool developed for RT-LOTOS, was first used to check TURTLE models against design errors. This paper opens new avenues for TURTLE
model verification. It shows how recent work on translating RT-LOTOS specifications into Time Petri net model may be applied to TURTLE. RT-LOTOS to TPN translation patterns are presented. Their formal proof is the subject of another paper. These patterns have been implemented in a RT-LOTOS to TPN translator which has been interfaced with TINA, a Time Petri Net Analyzer which implements several reachability analysis procedures depending on the class of property to be verified. The paper illustrates the benefits of the TURTLE->RT-LOTOS->TPN transformation chain on an avionic case study
Ten virtues of structured graphs
This paper extends the invited talk by the first author about the virtues
of structured graphs. The motivation behind the talk and this paper relies on our
experience on the development of ADR, a formal approach for the design of styleconformant,
reconfigurable software systems. ADR is based on hierarchical graphs
with interfaces and it has been conceived in the attempt of reconciling software architectures
and process calculi by means of graphical methods. We have tried to
write an ADR agnostic paper where we raise some drawbacks of flat, unstructured
graphs for the design and analysis of software systems and we argue that hierarchical,
structured graphs can alleviate such drawbacks
Integrated Design Tools for Embedded Control Systems
Currently, computer-based control systems are still being implemented using the same techniques as 10 years ago. Construction and Verification of Performance and Reliability Models
Over the last two decades formal methods have been extended towards performance and reliability evaluation. This paper tries to provide a rather intuitive explanation of the basic concepts and features in this area.
Instead of striving for mathematical rigour, the intention is to give an illustrative introduction to the basics of stochastic models, to stochastic modelling using process algebra, and to model checking as a technique to analyse stochastic models

Closed-loop Identification of an Industrial Extrusion Process
This paper deals with the challenging problem of closed-loop identification for multivariable chemical processes and particularly the estimation of an open-loop plant model for a lab-scale industrial twin-screw extruder used in a powder coatings manufacturing line. The aim is to produce a low order efficient model in order to assist the scaling-up and the model-based control design of the manufacturing process. To achieve this goal, a two-stage indirect approach has been deployed which relies on the a-priori knowledge of the controller parameters in order to extract good estimates of the open-loop dynamics of the underlying process. As input excitation signals we have used multiple single variable step tests at various operating conditions (current industrial practice) carried out manually in order to generate the data-set which captures the dynamics of the extrusion process. In order to increase the efforts for obtaining a suitable plant model, we have employed various identification techniques, such as Prediction Error Methods (PEM) and Subspace Identification Methods (SIM) in order to generate candidate closed-loop models that fit to the original input-output process data. Then, a comparison of the estimated models was performed by means of the mean square error and data fitting criteria in order to select the model that best describes the dynamic behaviour of the extrusion process.
