Improving Christofides' Algorithm for the s-t Path TSP
We present a deterministic (1+sqrt(5))/2-approximation algorithm for the s-t
path TSP for an arbitrary metric. Given a symmetric metric cost on n vertices
including two prespecified endpoints, the problem is to find a shortest
Hamiltonian path between the two endpoints; Hoogeveen showed that the natural
variant of Christofides' algorithm is a 5/3-approximation algorithm for this
problem, and this asymptotically tight bound in fact has been the best
approximation ratio known until now. We modify this algorithm so that it
chooses the initial spanning tree based on an optimal solution to the Held-Karp
relaxation rather than a minimum spanning tree; we prove this simple but
crucial modification leads to an improved approximation ratio, surpassing the
20-year-old barrier set by the natural Christofides' algorithm variant. Our
algorithm also proves an upper bound of (1+sqrt(5))/2 on the integrality gap of
the path-variant Held-Karp relaxation. The techniques devised in this paper can
be applied to other optimization problems as well: these applications include
improved approximation algorithms and improved LP integrality gap upper bounds
for the prize-collecting s-t path problem and the unit-weight graphical metric

Reformulation and decomposition of integer programs
In this survey we examine ways to reformulate integer and mixed integer programs. Typically, but not exclusively, one reformulates so as to obtain stronger linear programming relaxations, and hence better bounds for use in a branch-and-bound based algorithm. First we cover in detail reformulations based on decomposition, such as Lagrangean relaxation, Dantzig-Wolfe column generation and the resulting branch-and-price algorithms. This is followed by an examination of Benders’ type algorithms based on projection. Finally we discuss in detail extended formulations involving additional variables that are based on problem structure. These can often be used to provide strengthened a priori formulations. Integer programming approaches for minimum stabbing problems
The problem of finding structures with minimum stabbing number has received considerable attention from researchers. Particularly, [10] study the minimum stabbing number of perfect matchings (mspm), spanning trees (msst) and triangulations (mstr) associated to set of points in the plane. The complexity of the mstr remains open whilst the other two are known to be . This paper presents integer programming (ip) formulations for these three problems, that allowed us to solve them to optimality through ip branch-and-bound (b&b) or branch-and-cut (b&c) algorithms. Moreover, these models are the basis for the development of Lagrangian heuristics. Computational tests were conducted with instances taken from the literature where the performance of the Lagrangian heuristics were compared with that of the exact b&b and b&c algorithms. The results reveal that the Lagrangian heuristics yield solutions with minute, and often null, duality gaps for instances with several hundreds of points in small computation times. On the performance of a cavity method based algorithm for the Prize-Collecting Steiner Tree Problem on graphs
We study the behavior of an algorithm derived from the cavity method for the
Prize-Collecting Steiner Tree (PCST) problem on graphs. The algorithm is based
on the zero temperature limit of the cavity equations and as such is formally
simple (a fixed point equation resolved by iteration) and distributed
(parallelizable). We provide a detailed comparison with state-of-the-art
algorithms on a wide range of existing benchmarks networks and random graphs.
Specifically, we consider an enhanced derivative of the Goemans-Williamson
heuristics and the DHEA solver, a Branch and Cut Linear/Integer Programming
based approach. The comparison shows that the cavity algorithm outperforms the
two algorithms in most large instances both in running time and quality of the
solution. Finally we prove a few optimality properties of the solutions
provided by our algorithm, including optimality under the two post-processing
procedures defined in the Goemans-Williamson derivative and global optimality
in some limit cases

Combinatorial Path Planning for a System of Multiple Unmanned Vehicles
In this dissertation, the problem of planning the motion of m Unmanned Vehicles (UVs) (or simply vehicles) through n points in a plane is considered. A motion plan for a vehicle is given by the sequence of points and the corresponding angles at which each point must be visited by the vehicle. We require that each vehicle return to the same initial location(depot) at the same heading after visiting the points. The objective of the motion planning problem is to choose at most q(≤ m) UVs and find their motion plans so that all the points are visited and the total cost of the tours of the chosen vehicles is a minimum amongst all the possible choices of vehicles and their tours. This problem is a generalization of the wellknown Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) in many ways: (1) each UV takes the role of salesman (2) motion constraints of the UVs play an important role in determining the cost of travel between any two locations; in fact, the cost of the travel between any two locations depends on direction of travel along with the heading at the origin and destination, and (3) there is an additional combinatorial complexity stemming from the need to partition the points to be visited by each UV and the set of UVs that must be employed by the mission.
In this dissertation, a sub-optimal, two-step approach to motion planning is presented to solve this problem:(1) the combinatorial problem of choosing the vehicles and their associated tours is based on Euclidean distances between points and (2) once the sequence of points to be visited is specified, the heading at each point is determined based on a Dynamic Programming scheme. The solution to the first step is based on a generalization of Held-Karp’s method. We modify the Lagrangian heuristics for finding a close sub-optimal solution.
In the later chapters of the dissertation, we relax the assumption that all vehicles are homogenous. The motivation of heterogenous variant of Multi-depot, Multiple Traveling Salesmen Problem (MDMTSP) derives form applications involving Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) or ground robots requiring multiple vehicles with different capabilities to visit a set of locations
Engineering Branch-and-Cut Algorithms for the Equicut Problem
A minimum equicut of an edge-weighted graph is a partition of the nodes of the graph into two sets of equal size such hat the sum of the weights of edges joining nodes in different partitions is minimum. We compare basic linear and semidefnite relaxations for the equicut problem, and and that linear bounds are competitive with the corresponding semidefnite ones but can be computed much faster. Motivated by an application of equicut in theoretical physics, we revisit an approach by Brunetta et al. and present an enhanced branch-and-cut algorithm. Our computational results suggest that the proposed branch-andcut algorithm has a better performance than the algorithm of Brunetta et al.. Further, it is able to solve to optimality in reasonable time several instances with more than 200 nodes from the physics application
