    An Algorithmic Framework for Labeling Road Maps

    Given an unlabeled road map, we consider, from an algorithmic perspective, the cartographic problem to place non-overlapping road labels embedded in their roads. We first decompose the road network into logically coherent road sections, e.g., parts of roads between two junctions. Based on this decomposition, we present and implement a new and versatile framework for placing labels in road maps such that the number of labeled road sections is maximized. In an experimental evaluation with road maps of 11 major cities we show that our proposed labeling algorithm is both fast in practice and that it reaches near-optimal solution quality, where optimal solutions are obtained by mixed-integer linear programming. In comparison to the standard OpenStreetMap renderer Mapnik, our algorithm labels 31% more road sections in average.Comment: extended version of a paper to appear at GIScience 201

    Maximum Persistency via Iterative Relaxed Inference with Graphical Models

    We consider the NP-hard problem of MAP-inference for undirected discrete graphical models. We propose a polynomial time and practically efficient algorithm for finding a part of its optimal solution. Specifically, our algorithm marks some labels of the considered graphical model either as (i) optimal, meaning that they belong to all optimal solutions of the inference problem; (ii) non-optimal if they provably do not belong to any solution. With access to an exact solver of a linear programming relaxation to the MAP-inference problem, our algorithm marks the maximal possible (in a specified sense) number of labels. We also present a version of the algorithm, which has access to a suboptimal dual solver only and still can ensure the (non-)optimality for the marked labels, although the overall number of the marked labels may decrease. We propose an efficient implementation, which runs in time comparable to a single run of a suboptimal dual solver. Our method is well-scalable and shows state-of-the-art results on computational benchmarks from machine learning and computer vision.Comment: Reworked version, submitted to PAM

    Sampling from Stochastic Finite Automata with Applications to CTC Decoding

    Stochastic finite automata arise naturally in many language and speech processing tasks. They include stochastic acceptors, which represent certain probability distributions over random strings. We consider the problem of efficient sampling: drawing random string variates from the probability distribution represented by stochastic automata and transformations of those. We show that path-sampling is effective and can be efficient if the epsilon-graph of a finite automaton is acyclic. We provide an algorithm that ensures this by conflating epsilon-cycles within strongly connected components. Sampling is also effective in the presence of non-injective transformations of strings. We illustrate this in the context of decoding for Connectionist Temporal Classification (CTC), where the predictive probabilities yield auxiliary sequences which are transformed into shorter labeling strings. We can sample efficiently from the transformed labeling distribution and use this in two different strategies for finding the most probable CTC labeling

    Worst-case Optimal Submodular Extensions for Marginal Estimation

    Submodular extensions of an energy function can be used to efficiently compute approximate marginals via variational inference. The accuracy of the marginals depends crucially on the quality of the submodular extension. To identify the best possible extension, we show an equivalence between the submodular extensions of the energy and the objective functions of linear programming (LP) relaxations for the corresponding MAP estimation problem. This allows us to (i) establish the worst-case optimality of the submodular extension for Potts model used in the literature; (ii) identify the worst-case optimal submodular extension for the more general class of metric labeling; and (iii) efficiently compute the marginals for the widely used dense CRF model with the help of a recently proposed Gaussian filtering method. Using synthetic and real data, we show that our approach provides comparable upper bounds on the log-partition function to those obtained using tree-reweighted message passing (TRW) in cases where the latter is computationally feasible. Importantly, unlike TRW, our approach provides the first practical algorithm to compute an upper bound on the dense CRF model.Comment: Accepted to AISTATS 201

    Trajectory-Based Dynamic Map Labeling

    In this paper we introduce trajectory-based labeling, a new variant of dynamic map labeling, where a movement trajectory for the map viewport is given. We define a general labeling model and study the active range maximization problem in this model. The problem is NP-complete and W[1]-hard. In the restricted, yet practically relevant case that no more than k labels can be active at any time, we give polynomial-time algorithms.
