    Advanced manned space flight simulation and training: An investigation of simulation host computer system concepts

    The findings of a preliminary investigation by Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in simulation host computer concepts is presented. It is designed to aid NASA in evaluating simulation technologies for use in spaceflight training. The focus of the investigation is on the next generation of space simulation systems that will be utilized in training personnel for Space Station Freedom operations. SwRI concludes that NASA should pursue a distributed simulation host computer system architecture for the Space Station Training Facility (SSTF) rather than a centralized mainframe based arrangement. A distributed system offers many advantages and is seen by SwRI as the only architecture that will allow NASA to achieve established functional goals and operational objectives over the life of the Space Station Freedom program. Several distributed, parallel computing systems are available today that offer real-time capabilities for time critical, man-in-the-loop simulation. These systems are flexible in terms of connectivity and configurability, and are easily scaled to meet increasing demands for more computing power

    RELEASE: A High-level Paradigm for Reliable Large-scale Server Software

    Erlang is a functional language with a much-emulated model for building reliable distributed systems. This paper outlines the RELEASE project, and describes the progress in the rst six months. The project aim is to scale the Erlang's radical concurrency-oriented programming paradigm to build reliable general-purpose software, such as server-based systems, on massively parallel machines. Currently Erlang has inherently scalable computation and reliability models, but in practice scalability is constrained by aspects of the language and virtual machine. We are working at three levels to address these challenges: evolving the Erlang virtual machine so that it can work effectively on large scale multicore systems; evolving the language to Scalable Distributed (SD) Erlang; developing a scalable Erlang infrastructure to integrate multiple, heterogeneous clusters. We are also developing state of the art tools that allow programmers to understand the behaviour of massively parallel SD Erlang programs.     Cluster Computing in the Classroom: Topics, Guidelines, and Experiences

    With the progress of research on cluster computing, more and more universities have begun to offer various courses covering cluster computing. A wide variety of content can be taught in these courses. Because of this, a difficulty that arises is the selection of appropriate course material. The selection is complicated by the fact that some content in cluster computing is also covered by other courses such as operating systems, networking, or computer architecture. In addition, the background of students enrolled in cluster computing courses varies. These aspects of cluster computing make the development of good course material difficult. Combining our experiences in teaching cluster computing in several universities in the USA and Australia and conducting tutorials at many international conferences all over the world, we present prospective topics in cluster computing along with a wide variety of information sources (books, software, and materials on the web) from which instructors can choose. The course material described includes system architecture, parallel programming, algorithms, and applications. Instructors are advised to choose selected units in each of the topical areas and develop their own syllabus to meet course objectives. For example, a full course can be taught on system architecture for core computer science students. Or, a course on parallel programming could contain a brief coverage of system architecture and then devote the majority of time to programming methods. Other combinations are also possible. We share our experiences in teaching cluster computing and the topics we have chosen depending on course objectives

    DNA Workbench

    In this paper we describe DNA Workbench, a program for working with DNA, RNA, and protein sequences. It is designed to solve several problems that arise in two domains. The first domain is that of the algorithm designer and implementor who is working in the emerging field of computational biology. The second domain is that of the worker in a genetics laboratory, who needs frequently to turn to the computer to perform analysis on existing or newly acquired nucleotide or protein sequences. The problems encountered in these two domains overlap to a considerable extent. The problems, and how they are addressed by DNA WorkBench, are discussed within. DNA WorkBench addresses both of these groups with one program. In this way, new problems that require new algorithms can be quickly brought from a theoretical solution to an implementation and to the laboratory workbench. This rapid transfer from research to development to the field is essential in a fast moving area such as biotechnology, by which term I mean to encompass such specialties as molecular biology, genetics, human gene therapy, and the current large-scale international sequencing and mapping of human DNA which has been organized as the Human Genome Project in the United States

Here, we provide our perspective on how the recent landscape of serverless computing for scientific applications looks like. We discuss the advantages and problems with serverless computing for scientific applications, and based on the analysis of existing solutions and approaches, we propose a science-oriented architecture for a serverless computing framework that is based on the existing designs. Finally, we provide an outlook of current trends and future directions

    Functional requirements document for the Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) Scientific Computing Facilities (SCF) of the NASA/MSFC Earth Science and Applications Division, 1992

    Five scientists at MSFC/ESAD have EOS SCF investigator status. Each SCF has unique tasks which require the establishment of a computing facility dedicated to accomplishing those tasks. A SCF Working Group was established at ESAD with the charter of defining the computing requirements of the individual SCFs and recommending options for meeting these requirements. The primary goal of the working group was to determine which computing needs can be satisfied using either shared resources or separate but compatible resources, and which needs require unique individual resources. The requirements investigated included CPU-intensive vector and scalar processing, visualization, data storage, connectivity, and I/O peripherals. A review of computer industry directions and a market survey of computing hardware provided information regarding important industry standards and candidate computing platforms. It was determined that the total SCF computing requirements might be most effectively met using a hierarchy consisting of shared and individual resources. This hierarchy is composed of five major system types: (1) a supercomputer class vector processor; (2) a high-end scalar multiprocessor workstation; (3) a file server; (4) a few medium- to high-end visualization workstations; and (5) several low- to medium-range personal graphics workstations.
