A Portable, High Resolution, Surface Measurement Device
A high resolution, portable, surface measurement device has been demonstrated to provide micron-resolution topographical plots. This device was specifically developed to allow in-situ measurements of defects on the Space Shuttle Orbiter windows, but is versatile enough to be used on a wide variety of surfaces. This paper discusses the choice of an optical sensor and then the decisions required to convert a lab bench optical measurement device into an ergonomic portable system. The necessary trade-offs between performance and portability are presented along with a description of the device developed to measure Orbiter window defects
Comparative Analysis of Mobile 3D Scanning Technologies for Design, Manufacture of Interior and Exterior Tensile Material Structures and Canvasman Ltd. Case Study
This report aimed to investigate mobile 3D Scanning technologies to improve the 3D data capture and efficiency into Canvasman’s CAD design and manufacturing processes with focus on accurate resolution. The Santander funded Collaborative Venture Fund (CVF) project has provided research, survey data, evaluation and analysis for Canvasman Ltd. on 3D portable scanning hardware and software. The project solutions recommended in this report offers impartial product information on the current appropriate 3D scanning technology that potentially could improve efficiency of data capturing, design and manufacture of interior and exterior spaces, boats, vehicles and other similar constructions for creating and installing flexible coverings and indoor and outdoor structures
Linear scanning ATR-FTIR for chemical mapping and high-throughput studies of Pseudomonas sp. biofilms in microfluidic channels
A fully automated linear scanning attenuated total reflection (ATR) accessory
is presented for Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The approach
is based on the accurate displacement of a multi-bounce ATR crystal relative to
a stationary infrared beam. To ensure accurate positioning and to provide a
second sample characterization mode, a custom-built microscope was integrated
into the system and the computerized work flow. Custom software includes
automated control and measurement routines with a straightforward user
interface for selecting parameters and monitoring experimental progress. This
cost-effective modular system can be implemented on any research-grade
spectrometer with a standard sample compartment for new bioanalytical chemistry
studies. The system was validated and optimized for use with microfluidic flow
cells containing growing Pseudomonas sp. bacterial biofilms. The
complementarity among the scan positioning accuracy, measurement spatial
resolution and the microchannel dimensions paves the way for parallel
biological assays with real-time control over environmental parameters and
minimal manual labor. By rotating the channel orientation relative to the beam
path, the system could also be used for acquisition of linear biochemical maps
and stitched microscope images along the channel length.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure
ORIGAMIX, a CdTe-based spectro-imager development for nuclear applications
The Astrophysics Division of CEA Saclay has a long history in the development
of CdTe based pixelated detection planes for X and gamma-ray astronomy, with
time-resolved imaging and spectrometric capabilities. The last generation,
named Caliste HD, is an all-in-one modular instrument that fulfills
requirements for space applications. Its full-custom front-end electronics is
designed to work over a large energy range from 2 keV to 1 MeV with excellent
spectroscopic performances, in particular between 10 and 100 keV (0.56 keV FWHM
and 0.67 keV FWHM at 13.9 and 59.5 keV). In the frame of the ORIGAMIX project,
a consortium based on research laboratories and industrials has been settled in
order to develop a new generation of gamma camera. The aim is to develop a
system based on the Caliste architecture for post-accidental interventions or
homeland security, but integrating new properties (advanced spectrometry,
hybrid working mode) and suitable for industry. A first prototype was designed
and tested to acquire feedback for further developments. In this study, we
particularly focused on spectrometric performances with high energies and high
fluxes. Therefore, our device was exposed to energies up to 700 keV (133Ba,
137Cs) and we measured the evolution of energy resolution (0.96 keV at 80 keV,
2.18 keV at 356 keV, 3.33 keV at 662 keV). Detection efficiency decreases after
150 keV, as Compton effect becomes dominant. However, CALISTE is also designed
to handle multiple events, enabling Compton scattering reconstruction, which
can drastically improve detection efficiencies and dynamic range for higher
energies up to 1408 keV (22Na, 60Co, 152Eu) within a 1-mm thick detector. In
particular, such spectrometric performances obtained with 152Eu and 60Co were
never measured before with this kind of detector.Comment: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A:

Portable dynamic fundus instrument
A portable diagnostic image analysis instrument is disclosed for retinal funduscopy in which an eye fundus image is optically processed by a lens system to a charge coupled device (CCD) which produces recordable and viewable output data and is simultaneously viewable on an electronic view finder. The fundus image is processed to develop a representation of the vessel or vessels from the output data
A portable load cell for in-situ ore impact breakage testing
This paper discusses the design and characterisation of a short, and hence portable impact load cell for in-situ quantification of ore breakage properties under impact loading conditions. Much literature has been published in the past two decades about impact load cells for ore breakage testing. It has been conclusively shown that such machines yield significant quantitative energy-fragmentation information about industrial ores. However, documented load cells are all laboratory systems that are not adapted for in-situ testing due to their dimensions and operating requirements. The authors report on a new portable impact load cell designed specifically for in-situ testing. The load cell is 1.5 m in height and weighs 30 kg. Its physical and operating characteristics are detailed in the paper. This includes physical dimensions, calibration and signal deconvolution. Emphasis is placed on the deconvolution issue, which is significant for such a short load cell. Finally, it is
conclusively shown that the short load cell is quantitatively as accurate as its larger laboratory analogues
Review on the development of truly portable and in-situ capillary electrophoresis systems
Capillary electrophoresis (CE) is a technique which uses an electric field to separate a mixed sample into its constituents. Portable CE systems enable this powerful analysis technique to be used in the field. Many of the challenges for portable systems are similar to those of autonomous in-situ analysis and therefore portable systems may be considered a stepping stone towards autonomous in-situ analysis. CE is widely used for biological and chemical analysis and example applications include: water quality analysis; drug development and quality control; proteomics and DNA analysis; counter-terrorism (explosive material identification) and corrosion monitoring. The technique is often limited to laboratory use, since it requires large electric fields, sensitive detection systems and fluidic control systems. All of these place restrictions in terms of: size, weight, cost, choice of operating solutions, choice of fabrication materials, electrical power and lifetime. In this review we bring together and critique the work by researchers addressing these issues. We emphasize the importance of a holistic approach for portable and in-situ CE systems and discuss all the aspects of the design. We identify gaps in the literature which require attention for the realization of both truly portable and in-situ CE systems
