Big Data Transforms Discovery-Utilization Therapeutics Continuum.

    Get PDF
Enabling omic technologies adopt a holistic view to produce unprecedented insights into the molecular underpinnings of health and disease, in part, by generating massive high-dimensional biological data. Leveraging these systems-level insights as an engine driving the healthcare evolution is maximized through integration with medical, demographic, and environmental datasets from individuals to populations. Big data analytics has accordingly emerged to add value to the technical aspects of storage, transfer, and analysis required for merging vast arrays of omic-, clinical-, and eco-datasets. In turn, this new field at the interface of biology, medicine, and information science is systematically transforming modern therapeutics across discovery, development, regulation, and utilization

Design Guidelines for Prompt Engineering Text-to-Image Generative Models

Text-to-image generative models are a new and powerful way to generate visual artwork. However, the open-ended nature of text as interaction is double-edged; while users can input anything and have access to an infinite range of generations, they also must engage in brute-force trial and error with the text prompt when the result quality is poor. We conduct a study exploring what prompt keywords and model hyperparameters can help produce coherent outputs. In particular, we study prompts structured to include subject and style keywords and investigate success and failure modes of these prompts. Our evaluation of 5493 generations over the course of five experiments spans 51 abstract and concrete subjects as well as 51 abstract and figurative styles. From this evaluation, we present design guidelines that can help people produce better outcomes from text-to-image generative models

A Conceptual and Technical Discussion on Digital Painting as New Media Art: Introducing Some Malaysian Works

    Get PDF
The revolution of media technology offers artists a lot of possibilities to create different art forms. The artist explored and manipulated different media to give different impact in their works since modernism and post modernism period. Malaysia as one of Asian country also committed to art development where artist explore various media in painting including conventional and technological media as well. Digital technology and art movement were developed in two separate segments. In fact, new media art does not establish in art history plot. Therefore, the word digital painting poses an ambiguity to describe its status. The convergence of scientific term and art term called digital painting will be discussed into two sections under conceptual issues and technical issues. In conceptual issues, digital painting will be linked to the ingredient and components of art including the artist, the form, the audience and its surrounding, the subject, and the content. This paper will also discuss what is behind digital painting which includes some technical issues including concept of digital image, the hardware and the software. This paper will confer some Malaysian digital paintings situation and scenario. Subsequently, it summarizes the core elements in digital painting to be implemented in further studies

    New media and impressionism

This master’s thesis is framed in the areas of New Media Art (NMA) and Human Computer Interaction (HCI). In particular, it is focused in the study of New Media Art pieces that share a set of characteristics (the most important one being that they are composed by atomic elements), might be explicitly interactive, and are usually exhibited in public settings or have been designed to be consumed by a large simultaneous audience. The content of the thesis can be divided in four big items: 1- The review of a certain set of NMA pieces, their characteristics, and some similarities hold between them and the impressionist movement that emerged at the second half of the 19th century, along with some visual perception principles of Gestalt psychology. 2- A selection and an adaptation of pre-existing theoretical frameworks for modelling interaction in public settings. These theoretical frameworks comprise a set of tools for describing, analysing, and designing New Media Art pieces. 3- The presentation of a set of selected artworks authored or coauthored by the author of this thesis. A description of their characteristics and technology will be presented. 4- The introduction of two tools for artistic production, which were instrumental for the construction of some of the artworks here presented: Sendero (an LED lighting system), and N.IMP (a tool for real time visual content generation)

Transparency across semiotic modes: an ecological stance

The word transparency conflates disparate notions, such as a property of a substance, a behavioural characteristic of a person, a quality of a phenomenal state, a feature of an organization, a trait of a work of art, etc. Accordingly, discussions of transparency range through science, engineering, business, and humanities (Art-Azbuka 2005; Brin 1998; Florenskij 1993; Metzinger 2003; Podoroga 1995; Rowe and Slutsky 1982; Vattimo 1992, etc.). Therefore, the notion of transparency can surely claim a transdisciplinary status
