    Meeting technological challenges? Design and technology in schools 2007–10

    Using evidence from Her Majesty’s Inspectors’ focused surveys of primary and secondary schools, this report evaluates the provision of design and technology (D&T) in the curriculum. Most pupils in all of the schools visited enjoyed designing and making products, solving problems and seeing their ideas taking shape. Achievement and provision in D&T were good in about two thirds of the primary schools and just under half of the secondary schools, particularly where up-to-date technologies were used and explained accurately to pupils. However, a lack of subject-specific training for teachers undermined efforts to develop pupils’ knowledge and skills, particularly in using electronics, developing control systems and using computers to aid designing and making. The report also addresses the challenges presented to schools in modernising the D&T curriculum so that it keeps pace with global technological development

    In its education chapter, the Commission’s first Triennial Review of evidence on inequality, How Fair is Britain? Equality, Human Rights and Good Relations in 2010, found that educational attainment has been transformed in recent years. Around half of young people are now getting good qualifications at 16 (5+ A*-C GCSEs or equivalent including English and Maths) and, in 2008/09, 2.4 million students enrolled in higher education in the UK – a considerable change from a time when educational opportunities were only available to a minority of young people. However, the evidence shows that educational attainment continues to be strongly associated with socio-economic background. Stereotypical information and guidance can limit young people’s options and aspirations at an early age. Careers advice often reinforces traditional choices and young people have limited information on the pay advantages of nontraditional routes. Nearly one in four young people say that they have not had enough information to make choices for their future. This rises to just under a quarter of disabled young people

    A pragmatic approach to proverb use and interpretation

    Proverbs are interesting pieces of popular wisdom and tradition belonging to any culture, which help us to foreground the values and shared beliefs held by a speech community. However, its study has received little attention up to now. Thus, this dissertation research aims to analyze the functions and uses of proverbs taking examples from English and Spanish them. In order to achieve this goal, we have applied Sperber and Wilson’s Relevant Theory to explain how proverbs allow the speaker to express his/her intention in an implicit way. The findings demonstrate that the main functions of proverbs are criticism, advice and warning. In addition, we have offered an explanation of how their often ironical and metaphorical nature affects proverbs’ understanding. Besides, we have studied the use of the ellipsis in proverbs, which takes place in familiar proverbs, analyzing how familiarity and unfamiliarity influences on proverb use. Finally, we summed up our conclusions to achieve a better comprehension of proverbs’ functions and usesLos proverbios son ejemplos de sabiduría popular y tradición de cualquier cultura que nos ayudan a descubrir los valores y creencias compartidas por una comunidad de hablantes. Sin embargo, este estudio ha recibido poca atención hasta ahora. Por lo tanto, el propósito del presente trabajo es describir las funciones y usos de los proverbios y refranes concentrándonos en refranes de la lengua inglés y española para analizar y explicar las funciones y usos de los proverbios en general. Para conseguir nuestro propósito hemos aplicado la Teoría de la Relevancia de Sperber y Wilson a este estudio para explicar como ellos permiten al hablante expresar su intención de forma implícita. Las conclusiones demostrarán que la mayor función de los proverbios es la crítica, el consejo y advertencia. Además, hemos ofrecido una explicación de cómo su frecuente naturaleza irónica y metafórica influye en la comprensión de los proverbios. También hemos estudiado el uso de la elipsis en los proverbios, que toma lugar en los proverbios familiares, analizando como la familiaridad o el desconocimiento influye en el uso de los proverbios. Finalmente, resumiremos nuestras conclusiones para llegar a una mejor comprensión de las funciones y usos de los proverbio

    Taking boys seriously: a longitudinal study of adolescent male school-life experiences in Northern Ireland

    This report presents the findings of a five year longitudinal study (2006-2011) carried out by The Centre for Young Men’s Studies at the University of Ulster and funded by the Department of Education and the Department of Justice. The research was initiated in response to concerns about boys’ educational underachievement and wider concerns about boys’ health and well-being. The study annually tracked the same 378 adolescent boys aged 11-16 across nine post-primary schools in Northern Ireland

    Feminism in Action: Evaluation of AWDF's MDG3 Project

    In the year 2011, the African Women's Development Fund (AWDF) received a grant of 32 million from Comic Relief for the period of April 2011 to March 2014. This was preceded by a grant of 31 million in November 2012, making it a total of 33 million. The framework for the delivery of this project has largely been determined by AWDF's 2011-15 Strategic Plan (SPIII) and was to be implemented in Sub-Saharan Africa. An end of project evaluation was conducted for AWDF between July and August 2014. The evaluation was specifically focused on the performance of AWDF's Phase II Project which was part of Comic Relief's (CR) Devolved Grant Making Program. The project focused on four areas, namely: Grant Making in each of AWDF's six thematic areas; Capacity and Movement Building; Strengthening AWDF's Communications; and Partnership Development.The purpose of the evaluation was to evaluate the project performance, identify good practices and draw out lessons that can be applied in future interventions. As the Comic Relief grant was meant to support AWDF's Strategic Plan, the evaluation looked at AWDF's main areas of work and assessed the role of the Comic Relief grant within which the AWDF initiatives were conducted. The evaluation also coincided with AWDF's Strategic Plan mid-way point. In 2008, the African Women's Development Fund (AWDF) received a grant of u20ac5 million from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs to promote the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 3 on women's empowerment. The grant was provided for a three-year period from 2008 to 2011 and was implemented as AWDF's MDG3 Project. As the project was coming to end, between July and September 2011, AWDF commissioned an independent consultant to conduct a summative evaluation. This evaluation sought to achieve four key objectives: (i) Document activities undertaken; (ii) Assess outcomes arising from the activities undertaken; (iii) Assess which strategies were most effective; and (iv) Based on this, make recommendations for future programming. In addition to this, the evaluation sought to assess the extent to which AWDF, as a feminist organization, had lived up to feminist principles in implementation of the project.
