    Full duplex switched ethernet for next generation "1553B" -based applications

    Over the last thirty years, the MIL-STD 1553B data bus has been used in many embedded systems, like aircrafts, ships, missiles and satellites. However, the increasing number and complexity of interconnected subsystems lead to emerging needs for more communication bandwidth. Therefore, a new interconnection system is needed to overcome the limitations of the MIL-STD 1553B data bus. Among several high speed networks, Full Duplex Switched Ethernet is put forward here as an attractive candidate to replace the MIL-STD 1553B data bus. However, the key argument against Switched Ethernet lies in its non-deterministic behavior that makes it inadequate to deliver hard timeconstrained communications. Hence, our primary objective in this paper is to achieve an accepted QoS level offered by Switched Ethernet, to support diverse "1553B"-based applications requirements. We evaluate the performance of traffic shaping techniques on Full Duplex Switched Ethernet with an adequate choice of service strategy in the switch, to guarantee the real-time constraints required by these specific 1553B-based applications. An analytic study is conducted, using the Network Calculus formalism, to evaluate the deterministic guarantees offered by our approach. Theoretical analysis are then investigated in the case of a realistic "1553B"-based application extracted from a real military aircraft network. The results herein show the ability of profiled Full Duplex Switched Ethernet to satisfy 1553B-like real-time constraints

    This report is the mid-year report intended for the design concepts for the communication network for the Advanced Solid Rocket Motor (ASRM) facility being built at Yellow Creek near Iuka, MS. The overall network is to include heterogeneous computers, to use various protocols, and to have different bandwidths. Performance consideration must be given to the potential network applications in the network environment. The performance evaluation of X window applications was given the major emphasis in this report. A simulation study using Bones will be included later. This mid-year report has three parts: Part 1 is an investigation of X window traffic using TCP/IP over Ethernet networks; part 2 is a survey study of performance concepts of X window applications with Macintosh computers; and the last part is a tutorial on DECnet protocols. The results of this report should be useful in the design and operation of the ASRM communication network

    A parallel algorithm to calculate the costrank of a network

    We developed analogous parallel algorithms to implement CostRank for distributed memory parallel computers using multi processors. Our intent is to make CostRank calculations for the growing number of hosts in a fast and a scalable way. In the same way we intent to secure large scale networks that require fast and reliable computing to calculate the ranking of enormous graphs with thousands of vertices (states) and millions or arcs (links). In our proposed approach we focus on a parallel CostRank computational architecture on a cluster of PCs networked via Gigabit Ethernet LAN to evaluate the performance and scalability of our implementation. In particular, a partitioning of input data, graph files, and ranking vectors with load balancing technique can improve the runtime and scalability of large-scale parallel computations. An application case study of analogous Cost Rank computation is presented. Applying parallel environment models for one-dimensional sparse matrix partitioning on a modified research page, results in a significant reduction in communication overhead and in per-iteration runtime. We provide an analytical discussion of analogous algorithms performance in terms of I/O and synchronization cost, as well as of memory usage
