    A Survey and Analysis of Cooperative Multi-Agent Robot Systems: Challenges and Directions

    Research in the area of cooperative multi-agent robot systems has received wide attention among researchers in recent years. The main concern is to find the effective coordination among autonomous agents to perform the task in order to achieve a high quality of overall performance. Therefore, this paper reviewed various selected literatures primarily from recent conference proceedings and journals related to cooperation and coordination of multi-agent robot systems (MARS). The problems, issues, and directions of MARS research have been investigated in the literature reviews. Three main elements of MARS which are the type of agents, control architectures, and communications were discussed thoroughly in the beginning of this paper. A series of problems together with the issues were analyzed and reviewed, which included centralized and decentralized control, consensus, containment, formation, task allocation, intelligences, optimization and communications of multi-agent robots. Since the research in the field of multi-agent robot research is expanding, some issues and future challenges in MARS are recalled, discussed and clarified with future directions. Finally, the paper is concluded with some recommendations with respect to multi-agent systems

    Semantic-based adaptive mission planning for unmanned underwater vehicles

    Current underwater robotic platforms rely upon waypoint-based scripted missions which are described by the operator a-priori. This renders systems incapable of reacting to the unexpected. In this thesis, we claim that the ability to autonomously adapt the decision making process is the key to facilitating the change over from human intervention to intelligent autonomy. We identify goal-based declarative mission planning as an attractive solution to autonomous adaptability because it combines autonomous decision making with higher levels of human interaction. Goal-based mission planning requires the use of abstract knowledge representation and situation awareness to link the prior knowledge provided by the operator with the information coming from the processed sensor data. To achieve this, we propose a semantic-based knowledge representation framework that allows this integration of prior and processed information among all different agents available in the platform. In order to evaluate adaptive mission planning techniques, we also introduce a novel metric which measures the proximity between plans. We demonstrate that this metric is better informed than previous metrics for measuring the adaptation process. In this thesis we implement three different approaches to goal-based mission planning in order to investigate which approach is most appropriate under different circumstances. The first approach, continuous mission planning, focusses on long-term deployment. This approach is based on a continuous re-assessment of the status of the mission environment. Using our proximity metric, we evaluated this approach and show that there is a high degree of similarity between our approach and the humanly driven adaptation, both in a known static environment and in a partially-known dynamic discoverable environment. The second, service-oriented mission planning, makes use of the semantic framework to provide autonomous mission planning for the dynamic discovery of the services published by the different agents in the system. This allows platform independence, easing the manual creation of mission plans, and robustness to changes. We show that this approach produces the same plans as the baseline which was explicitly provided with the platform configuration. The last approach, mission plan repair, handles the scenario where small changes occur in the mission environment and there are limited resources for planning. We develop and deploy a mission plan repair approach within a semantic-based autonomous planning system in a real underwater vehicle. Experiments demonstrate that the integrated system is capable of providing mission adaptation for maintaining the operability of the host platform in the face of unexpected events

Veículos inteligentes, por exemplo, frequentemente baseiam suas decisões em observações obtidas a partir de vários sensores tais como LIDAR, GPS e câmeras. Atualmente, sensores de câmera têm recebido grande atenção pelo motivo de que eles são de baixo custo, fáceis de utilizar e fornecem dados com rica informação. Ambientes urbanos representam um interessante mas também desafiador cenário neste contexto, onde o traçado das ruas podem ser muito complexos, a presença de objetos tais como árvores, bicicletas, veículos podem gerar observações parciais e também estas observações são muitas vezes ruidosas ou ainda perdidas devido a completas oclusões. Portanto, o processo de percepção por natureza precisa ser capaz de lidar com a incerteza no conhecimento do mundo em torno do veículo. Nesta tese, este problema de percepção é analisado para a condução nos ambientes urbanos associado com a capacidade de realizar um deslocamento seguro baseado no processo de tomada de decisão em navegação autônoma. Projeta-se um sistema de percepção que permita veículos robóticos a trafegar autonomamente nas ruas, sem a necessidade de adaptar a infraestrutura, sem o conhecimento prévio do ambiente e considerando a presença de objetos dinâmicos tais como veículos. Propõe-se um novo método baseado em aprendizado de máquina para extrair o contexto semântico usando um par de imagens estéreo, a qual é vinculada a uma grade de ocupação evidencial que modela as incertezas de um ambiente urbano desconhecido, aplicando a teoria de Dempster-Shafer. Para a tomada de decisão no planejamento do caminho, aplica-se a abordagem dos tentáculos virtuais para gerar possíveis caminhos a partir do centro de referencia do veículo e com base nisto, duas novas estratégias são propostas. Em primeiro, uma nova estratégia para escolher o caminho correto para melhor evitar obstáculos e seguir a tarefa local no contexto da navegação hibrida e, em segundo, um novo controle de malha fechada baseado na odometria visual e o tentáculo virtual é modelado para execução do seguimento de caminho. Finalmente, um completo sistema automotivo integrando os modelos de percepção, planejamento e controle são implementados e validados experimentalmente em condições reais usando um veículo autônomo experimental, onde os resultados mostram que a abordagem desenvolvida realiza com sucesso uma segura navegação local com base em sensores de câmeraAbstract: The development of autonomous vehicles capable of getting around on urban roads can provide important benefits in reducing accidents, in increasing life comfort and also in providing cost savings. Intelligent vehicles for example often base their decisions on observations obtained from various sensors such as LIDAR, GPS and Cameras. Actually, camera sensors have been receiving large attention due to they are cheap, easy to employ and provide rich data information. Inner-city environments represent an interesting but also very challenging scenario in this context, where the road layout may be very complex, the presence of objects such as trees, bicycles, cars might generate partial observations and also these observations are often noisy or even missing due to heavy occlusions. Thus, perception process by nature needs to be able to deal with uncertainties in the knowledge of the world around the car. While highway navigation and autonomous driving using a prior knowledge of the environment have been demonstrating successfully, understanding and navigating general inner-city scenarios with little prior knowledge remains an unsolved problem. In this thesis, this perception problem is analyzed for driving in the inner-city environments associated with the capacity to perform a safe displacement based on decision-making process in autonomous navigation. It is designed a perception system that allows robotic-cars to drive autonomously on roads, without the need to adapt the infrastructure, without requiring previous knowledge of the environment and considering the presence of dynamic objects such as cars. It is proposed a novel method based on machine learning to extract the semantic context using a pair of stereo images, which is merged in an evidential grid to model the uncertainties of an unknown urban environment, applying the Dempster-Shafer theory. To make decisions in path-planning, it is applied the virtual tentacle approach to generate possible paths starting from ego-referenced car and based on it, two news strategies are proposed. First one, a new strategy to select the correct path to better avoid obstacles and to follow the local task in the context of hybrid navigation, and second, a new closed loop control based on visual odometry and virtual tentacle is modeled to path-following execution. Finally, a complete automotive system integrating the perception, path-planning and control modules are implemented and experimentally validated in real situations using an experimental autonomous car, where the results show that the developed approach successfully performs a safe local navigation based on camera sensorsDoutoradoMecanica dos Sólidos e Projeto MecanicoDoutor em Engenharia Mecânic

    For the latest twenty to thirty years, a significant number of AUVs has been created for the solving of wide spectrum of scientific and applied tasks of ocean development and research. For the short time period the AUVs have shown the efficiency at performance of complex search and inspection works and opened a number of new important applications. Initially the information about AUVs had mainly review-advertising character but now more attention is paid to practical achievements, problems and systems technologies. AUVs are losing their prototype status and have become a fully operational, reliable and effective tool and modern multi-purpose AUVs represent the new class of underwater robotic objects with inherent tasks and practical applications, particular features of technology, systems structure and functional properties

    A review of UAV autonomous navigation in GPS-denied environments

    Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have drawn increased research interest in recent years, leading to a vast number of applications, such as, terrain exploration, disaster assistance and industrial inspection. Unlike UAV navigation in outdoor environments that rely on GPS (Global Positioning System) for localization, indoor navigation cannot rely on GPS due to the poor quality or lack of signal. Although some reviewing papers particularly summarized indoor navigation strategies (e.g., Visual-based Navigation) or their specific sub-components (e.g., localization and path planning) in detail, there still lacks a comprehensive survey for the complete navigation strategies that cover different technologies. This paper proposes a taxonomy which firstly classifies the navigation strategies into Mapless and Map-based ones based on map usage and then, respectively categorizes the Mapless navigation into Integrated, Direct and Indirect approaches via common characteristics. The Map-based navigation is then split into Known Map/Spaces and Map-building via prior knowledge. In order to analyze these navigation strategies, this paper uses three evaluation metrics (Path Length, Deviation Rate and Exploration Efficiency) according to the common purposes of navigation to show how well they can perform. Furthermore, three representative strategies were selected and 120 flying experiments conducted in two reality-like simulated indoor environments to show their performances against the evaluation metrics proposed in this paper, i.e., the ratio of Successful Flight, the Mean time of Successful Flight, the Mean Length of Successful Flight, the Mean time of Flight, and the Mean Length of Flight. In comparison to the CNN-based Supervised Learning (directly maps visual observations to UAV controls) and the Frontier-based navigation (necessitates continuous global map generation), the experiments show that the CNN-based Distance Estimation for navigation trades off the ratio of Successful Flight and the required time and path length. Moreover, this paper identifies the current challenges and opportunities which will drive UAV navigation research in GPS-denied environments
