    Collision avoidance effects on the mobility of a UAV swarm using chaotic ant colony with model predictive control.

    The recent development of compact and economic small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) permits the development of new UAV swarm applications. In order to enhance the area coverage of such UAV swarms, a novel mobility model has been presented in previous work, combining an Ant Colony algorithm with chaotic dynamics (CACOC). This work is extending CACOC by a Collision Avoidance (CA) mechanism and testing its efficiency in terms of area coverage by the UAV swarm. For this purpose, CACOC is used to compute UAV target waypoints which are tracked by model predictively controlled UAVs. The UAVs are represented by realistic motion models within the virtual robot experimentation platform (V-Rep). This environment is used to evaluate the performance of the proposed CACOC with CA algorithm in an area exploration scenario with 3 UAVs. Finally, its performance is analyzed using metrics

    A Comprehensive Survey on Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm and Its Applications

    Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a heuristic global optimization method, proposed originally by Kennedy and Eberhart in 1995. It is now one of the most commonly used optimization techniques. This survey presented a comprehensive investigation of PSO. On one hand, we provided advances with PSO, including its modifications (including quantum-behaved PSO, bare-bones PSO, chaotic PSO, and fuzzy PSO), population topology (as fully connected, von Neumann, ring, star, random, etc.), hybridization (with genetic algorithm, simulated annealing, Tabu search, artificial immune system, ant colony algorithm, artificial bee colony, differential evolution, harmonic search, and biogeography-based optimization), extensions (to multiobjective, constrained, discrete, and binary optimization), theoretical analysis (parameter selection and tuning, and convergence analysis), and parallel implementation (in multicore, multiprocessor, GPU, and cloud computing forms). On the other hand, we offered a survey on applications of PSO to the following eight fields: electrical and electronic engineering, automation control systems, communication theory, operations research, mechanical engineering, fuel and energy, medicine, chemistry, and biology. It is hoped that this survey would be beneficial for the researchers studying PSO algorithms

    Multi-Criteria Performance Evaluation and Control in Power and Energy Systems

    The role of intuition and human preferences are often overlooked in autonomous control of power and energy systems. However, the growing operational diversity of many systems such as microgrids, electric/hybrid-electric vehicles and maritime vessels has created a need for more flexible control and optimization methods. In order to develop such flexible control methods, the role of human decision makers and their desired performance metrics must be studied in power and energy systems. This dissertation investigates the concept of multi-criteria decision making as a gateway to integrate human decision makers and their opinions into complex mathematical control laws. There are two major steps this research takes to algorithmically integrate human preferences into control environments: MetaMetric (MM) performance benchmark: considering the interrelations of mathematical and psychological convergence, and the potential conflict of opinion between the control designer and end-user, a novel holistic performance benchmark, denoted as MM, is developed to evaluate control performance in real-time. MM uses sensor measurements and implicit human opinions to construct a unique criterion that benchmarks the system\u27s performance characteristics. MM decision support system (DSS): the concept of MM is incorporated into multi-objective evolutionary optimization algorithms as their DSS. The DSS\u27s role is to guide and sort the optimization decisions such that they reflect the best outcome desired by the human decision-maker and mathematical considerations. A diverse set of case studies including a ship power system, a terrestrial power system, and a vehicular traction system are used to validate the approaches proposed in this work. Additionally, the MM DSS is designed in a modular way such that it is not specific to any underlying evolutionary optimization algorithm

    An Evolutionary Computational Approach for the Problem of Unit Commitment and Economic Dispatch in Microgrids under Several Operation Modes

    In the last decades, new types of generation technologies have emerged and have been gradually integrated into the existing power systems, moving their classical architectures to distributed systems. Despite the positive features associated to this paradigm, new problems arise such as coordination and uncertainty. In this framework, microgrids constitute an effective solution to deal with the coordination and operation of these distributed energy resources. This paper proposes a Genetic Algorithm (GA) to address the combined problem of Unit Commitment (UC) and Economic Dispatch (ED). With this end, a model of a microgrid is introduced together with all the control variables and physical constraints. To optimally operate the microgrid, three operation modes are introduced. The first two attend to optimize economical and environmental factors, while the last operation mode considers the errors induced by the uncertainties in the demand forecasting. Therefore, it achieves a robust design that guarantees the power supply for different confidence levels. Finally, the algorithm was applied to an example scenario to illustrate its performance.     A robot swarm assisting a human fire-fighter

    Emergencies in industrial warehouses are a major concern for fire-fighters. The large dimensions, together with the development of dense smoke that drastically reduces visibility, represent major challenges. The GUARDIANS robot swarm is designed to assist fire-fighters in searching a large warehouse. In this paper we discuss the technology developed for a swarm of robots assisting fire-fighters. We explain the swarming algorithms that provide the functionality by which the robots react to and follow humans while no communication is required. Next we discuss the wireless communication system, which is a so-called mobile ad-hoc network. The communication network provides also the means to locate the robots and humans. Thus, the robot swarm is able to provide guidance information to the humans. Together with the fire-fighters we explored how the robot swarm should feed information back to the human fire-fighter. We have designed and experimented with interfaces for presenting swarm-based information to human beings

    Design optimisation and real-time energy management control of the electrified off-highway vehicle with artificial intelligence

    Targeting zeros-emissions in transportation, future vehicles will be more energy-efficient via powertrain electrification. This PhD research aims to optimise an electrified off-highway vehicle to achieve the maximum energy efficiency by exploring new artificial intelligence algorithms. The modelling study of the vehicle system is firstly performed. Offline design optimisation and online optimum energy management control methodologies have been researched. New optimisation methods are proposed and compared with the benchmark methods. Hardware-in-the-Loop testing of the energy management controller has been carried out for validation of the control methods. This research delivers three original contributions: 1) Chaos-enhance accelerated particle swarm optimisation algorithm for offline design optimisation is proposed for the first time. This can achieve 200% higher reputation-index value compared to the particle swarm optimisation method. 2) Online swarm intelligent programming is developed as a new online optimisation method for model-based predictive control of the vehicle energy-flow. This method can save up to 17% energy over the rule-based strategy. 3) Multi-step reinforcement learning is researched for a new concept of ‘model-free’ predictive energy management with the capability of continuously online optimisation in real-world driving. It can further save at least 9% energy
