A Novel Learning Based Model Predictive Control Strategy for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle

    Get PDF
The multi-source electromechanical coupling renders energy management of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) highly nonlinear and complex. Furthermore, the complicated nonlinear management process highly depends on knowledge of driving conditions, and hinders the control strategies efficiently applied instantaneously, leading to massive challenges in energy saving improvement of PHEVs. To address these issues, a novel learning based model predictive control (LMPC) strategy is developed for a serial-parallel PHEV with the reinforced optimal control effect in real time application. Rather than employing the velocity-prediction based MPC methods favored in the literature, an original reference-tracking based MPC solution is proposed with strong instant application capacity. To guarantee the optimal control effect, an online learning process is implemented in MPC via the Gaussian process (GP) model to address the uncertainties during state estimation. The tracking reference in LMPC based control problem in PHEV is achieved by a microscopic traffic flow analysis (MTFA) method. The simulation results validate that the proposed method can optimally manage energy flow within vehicle power sources in real time, highlighting its anticipated preferable performance

Vehicle electrification has been identified as one of the main technology trends in this second decade of the 21st century. Nearly 10% of global car sales in 2021 were electric, and this figure would be 50% by 2030 to reduce the oil import dependency and transport emissions in line with countriesā€™ climate goals. This book addresses the efficient power and propulsion systems which cover essential topics for research and development on EVs, HEVs and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV), including: Energy storage systems (battery, fuel cell, supercapacitors, and their hybrid systems); Power electronics devices and converters; Electric machine drive control, optimization, and design; Energy system advanced management methods Primarily intended for professionals and advanced students who are working on EV/HEV/FCEV power and propulsion systems, this edited book surveys state of the art novel control/optimization techniques for different components, as well as for vehicle as a whole system. New readers may also find valuable information on the structure and methodologies in such an interdisciplinary field. Contributed by experienced authors from different research laboratory around the world, these 11 chapters provide balanced materials from theorical background to methodologies and practical implementation to deal with various issues of this challenging technology. This reprint encourages researchers working in this field to stay actualized on the latest developments on electric vehicle efficient power and propulsion systems, for road and rail, both manned and unmanned vehicles

Extremum Seeking-based Iterative Learning Linear MPC

In this work we study the problem of adaptive MPC for linear time-invariant uncertain models. We assume linear models with parametric uncertainties, and propose an iterative multi-variable extremum seeking (MES)-based learning MPC algorithm to learn on-line the uncertain parameters and update the MPC model. We show the effectiveness of this algorithm on a DC servo motor control example.Comment: To appear at the IEEE MSC 201

The objective was to develop a computerized adaptive pilot model for the computer model of the research aircraft, the Harrier II AV-8B V/STOL with special emphasis on propulsion control. In fact, two versions of the adaptive pilot are given. The first, simply called the Adaptive Control Model (ACM) of a pilot includes a parameter estimation algorithm for the parameters of the aircraft and an adaption scheme based on the root locus of the poles of the pilot controlled aircraft. The second, called the Optimal Control Model of the pilot (OCM), includes an adaption algorithm and an optimal control algorithm. These computer simulations were developed as a part of the ongoing research program in pilot model simulation supported by NASA Lewis from April 1, 1985 to August 30, 1986 under NASA Grant NAG 3-606 and from September 1, 1986 through November 30, 1988 under NASA Grant NAG 3-729. Once installed, these pilot models permitted the computer simulation of the pilot model to close all of the control loops normally closed by a pilot actually manipulating the control variables. The current version of this has permitted a baseline comparison of various qualitative and quantitative performance indices for propulsion control, the control loops and the work load on the pilot. Actual data for an aircraft flown by a human pilot furnished by NASA was compared to the outputs furnished by the computerized pilot and found to be favorable

According to the National Research Council, the use of embedded systems throughout society could well overtake previous milestones in the information revolution. Mechatronics is the synergistic combination of electronic, mechanical engineering, controls, software and systems engineering in the design of processes and products. Mechatronic systems put ā€œintelligenceā€ into physical systems. Embedded sensors/actuators/processors are integral parts of mechatronic systems. The implementation of mechatronic systems is consistently on the rise. However, manufacturers are working hard to reduce the implementation cost of these systems while trying avoid compromising product quality. One way of addressing these conflicting objectives is through new automatic control methods, virtual sensing/estimation, and new innovative hardware topologies
