    Optimal Spectrum Access for Cognitive Radios

    In this paper, we investigate a time-slotted cognitive setting with buffered primary and secondary users. In order to alleviate the negative effects of misdetection and false alarm probabilities, a novel design of spectrum access mechanism is proposed. We propose two schemes. First, the SU senses primary channel to exploit the periods of silence, if the PU is declared to be idle, the SU randomly accesses the channel with some access probability asa_s. Second, in addition to accessing the channel if the PU is idle, the SU possibly accesses the channel if it is declared to be busy with some access probability bsb_s. The access probabilities as function of the misdetection, false alarm and average primary arrival rate are obtained via solving an optimization problem designed to maximize the secondary service rate given a constraint on primary queue stability. In addition, we propose a variable sensing duration schemes where the SU optimizes over the optimal sensing time to achieve the maximum stable throughput of the network. The results reveal the performance gains of the proposed schemes over the conventional sensing scheme. We propose a method to estimate the mean arrival rate and the outage probability of the PU based on the primary feedback channel, i.e., acknowledgments (ACKs) and negative-acknowledgments (NACKs) messages.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1206.615

    A minimal model for congestion phenomena on complex networks

    We study a minimal model of traffic flows in complex networks, simple enough to get analytical results, but with a very rich phenomenology, presenting continuous, discontinuous as well as hybrid phase transitions between a free-flow phase and a congested phase, critical points and different scaling behaviors in the system size. It consists of random walkers on a queueing network with one-range repulsion, where particles can be destroyed only if they can move. We focus on the dependence on the topology as well as on the level of traffic control. We are able to obtain transition curves and phase diagrams at analytical level for the ensemble of uncorrelated networks and numerically for single instances. We find that traffic control improves global performance, enlarging the free-flow region in parameter space only in heterogeneous networks. Traffic control introduces non-linear effects and, beyond a critical strength, may trigger the appearance of a congested phase in a discontinuous manner. The model also reproduces the cross-over in the scaling of traffic fluctuations empirically observed in the Internet, and moreover, a conserved version can reproduce qualitatively some stylized facts of traffic in transportation networks

    Transport on complex networks: Flow, jamming and optimization

    Many transport processes on networks depend crucially on the underlying network geometry, although the exact relationship between the structure of the network and the properties of transport processes remain elusive. In this paper we address this question by using numerical models in which both structure and dynamics are controlled systematically. We consider the traffic of information packets that include driving, searching and queuing. We present the results of extensive simulations on two classes of networks; a correlated cyclic scale-free network and an uncorrelated homogeneous weakly clustered network. By measuring different dynamical variables in the free flow regime we show how the global statistical properties of the transport are related to the temporal fluctuations at individual nodes (the traffic noise) and the links (the traffic flow). We then demonstrate that these two network classes appear as representative topologies for optimal traffic flow in the regimes of low density and high density traffic, respectively. We also determine statistical indicators of the pre-jamming regime on different network geometries and discuss the role of queuing and dynamical betweenness for the traffic congestion. The transition to the jammed traffic regime at a critical posting rate on different network topologies is studied as a phase transition with an appropriate order parameter. We also address several open theoretical problems related to the network dynamics
