Machine Learning in Wireless Sensor Networks: Algorithms, Strategies, and Applications
Wireless sensor networks monitor dynamic environments that change rapidly
over time. This dynamic behavior is either caused by external factors or
initiated by the system designers themselves. To adapt to such conditions,
sensor networks often adopt machine learning techniques to eliminate the need
for unnecessary redesign. Machine learning also inspires many practical
solutions that maximize resource utilization and prolong the lifespan of the
network. In this paper, we present an extensive literature review over the
period 2002-2013 of machine learning methods that were used to address common
issues in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The advantages and disadvantages of
each proposed algorithm are evaluated against the corresponding problem. We
also provide a comparative guide to aid WSN designers in developing suitable

Locating sensors with fuzzy logic algorithms
In a system formed by hundreds of sensors deployed
in a huge area it is important to know the position where every
sensor is.
This information can be obtained using several methods.
However, if the number of sensors is high and the deployment
is based on ad-hoc manner, some auto-locating techniques must
be implemented.
In this paper we describe a novel algorithm based on fuzzy
logic with the objective of estimating the location of sensors
according to the knowledge of the position of some reference
nodes.
This algorithm, called LIS (Localization based on Intelligent
Sensors) is executed distributively along a wireless sensor network
formed by hundreds of nodes, covering a huge area.
The evaluation of LIS is led by simulation tests. The result
obtained shows that LIS is a promising method that can easily

LIS: Localization based on an intelligent distributed fuzzy system applied to a WSN
The localization of the sensor nodes is a fundamental problem in wireless sensor networks.
There are a lot of different kinds of solutions in the literature. Some of them use external
devices like GPS, while others use special hardware or implicit parameters in wireless
communications.
In applications like wildlife localization in a natural environment, where the power available
and the weight are big restrictions, the use of hungry energy devices like GPS or hardware
that add extra weight like mobile directional antenna is not a good solution.
Due to these reasons it would be better to use the localization’s implicit characteristics in
communications, such as connectivity, number of hops or RSSI. The measurement related
to these parameters are currently integrated in most radio devices. These measurement
techniques are based on the beacons’ transmissions between the devices.
In the current study, a novel tracking distributed method, called LIS, for localization of
the sensor nodes using moving devices in a network of static nodes, which have no additional
hardware requirements is proposed.
The position is obtained with the combination of two algorithms; one based on a local
node using a fuzzy system to obtain a partial solution and the other based on a centralized
method which merges all the partial solutions. The centralized algorithm is based on the
calculation of the centroid of the partial solutions.
Advantages of using fuzzy system versus the classical Centroid Localization (CL)
algorithm without fuzzy preprocessing are compared with an ad hoc simulator made for
testing localization algorithms.
With this simulator, it is demonstrated that the proposed method obtains less localization

Enhanced Performance Cooperative Localization Wireless Sensor Networks Based on Received-Signal-Strength Method and ACLM
There has been a rise in research interest in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) due to the potential for his or her widespread use in many various areas like home automation, security, environmental monitoring, and lots more. Wireless sensor network (WSN) localization is a very important and fundamental problem that has received a great deal of attention from the WSN research community. Determining the relative coordinate of sensor nodes within the network adds way more aiming to sense data. The research community is extremely rich in proposals to deal with this challenge in WSN. This paper explores the varied techniques proposed to deal with the acquisition of location information in WSN. In the study of the research paper finding the performance in WSN and those techniques supported the energy consumption in mobile nodes in WSN, needed to implement the technique and localization accuracy (error rate) and discuss some open issues for future research. The thought behind Internet of things is that the interconnection of the Internet-enabled things or devices to every other and human to realize some common goals. WSN localization is a lively research area with tons of proposals in terms of algorithms and techniques. Centralized localization techniques estimate every sensor node's situation on a network from a central Base Station, finding absolute or relative coordinates (positioning) with or without a reference node, usually called the anchor (beacon) node. Target Tracking in Confined Environments with Uncertain Sensor Positions
To ensure safety in confined environments such as mines or subway tunnels, a
(wireless) sensor network can be deployed to monitor various environmental
conditions. One of its most important applications is to track personnel,
mobile equipment and vehicles. However, the state-of-the-art algorithms assume
that the positions of the sensors are perfectly known, which is not necessarily
true due to imprecise placement and/or dropping of sensors. Therefore, we
propose an automatic approach for simultaneous refinement of sensors' positions
and target tracking. We divide the considered area in a finite number of cells,
define dynamic and measurement models, and apply a discrete variant of belief
propagation which can efficiently solve this high-dimensional problem, and
handle all non-Gaussian uncertainties expected in this kind of environments.
Finally, we use ray-tracing simulation to generate an artificial mine-like
environment and generate synthetic measurement data. According to our extensive
simulation study, the proposed approach performs significantly better than
standard Bayesian target tracking and localization algorithms, and provides

Optimization and Sequence Search Based Localization in Wireless Sensor Networks
Localization is critical for various applications of Wireless Sensor Networks. This paper presents a 3D localization algorithm for high accuracy localization of a wireless sensor network, which consists of three parts: pre-localization, refinement and sequence search. It is clear that the localization accuracy partly depends on the localization sequence of the unknown nodes, which has not been investigated so far. The proposed novel algorithm aims to address this problem by searching a localization sequence corresponding to a high localization accuracy and a robust algorithm. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can get rid of the flip ambiguity and is more robust than several existing algorithms in terms of the localization accuracy
A hybrid localization approach in 3D wireless sensor network
Location information acquisition is crucial for many wireless sensor network (WSN) applications. While existing localization approaches mainly focus on 2D plane, the emerging 3D localization brings WSNs closer to reality with much enhanced accuracy. Two types of 3D localization algorithms are mainly used in localization application: the range-based localization and the range-free localization. The range-based localization algorithm has strict requirements on hardware and therefore is costly to implement in practice. The range-free localization algorithm reduces the hardware cost but at the expense of low localization accuracy. On addressing the shortage of both algorithms, in this paper, we develop a novel hybrid localization scheme, which utilizes the range-based attribute RSSI and the range-free attribute hopsize, to achieve accurate yet low-cost 3D localization. As anchor node deployment strategy plays an important role in improving the localization accuracy, an anchor node configuration scheme is also developed in this work by utilizing the MIS (maximal independent set) of a network. With proper anchor node configuration and propagation model selection, using simulations, we show that our proposed algorithm improves the localization accuracy by 38.9% compared with 3D DV-HOP and 52.7% compared with 3D centroid
Improve Performance Wireless Sensor Network Localization using RSSI and AEMM
Improve wireless sensor network localisation performance using RSSI and an advanced error minimisation method (AEMM). WSNs remain domain-specific and are typically deployed to support a single application. However, as WSN nodes become more powerful, it becomes increasingly important to investigate how multiple applications can share the same WSN infrastructure. Virtualisation is a technology that may allow for this sharing. The issues surrounding wireless sensor node localisation estimation are still being researched. There are a large number of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) with limited computing, sensing, and energy capabilities. Localisation is one of the most important topics in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) because location information is typically useful for many applications. The locations of anchor nodes and the distances between neighbouring nodes are the primary data in a localisation process. The complexity and diversity of current and future wireless detector network operations drive this. Several single schemes have been proposed and studied for position estimation, each with advantages and limitations.
Nonetheless, current methods for evaluating the performance of wireless detector networks are heavily focused on a single private or objective evaluation. Accurate position information in a wireless detector network is critical for colourful arising operations (WSN). It is critical to reducing the goods of noisy distance measures to improve localisation accuracy. Existing works (RSSI) are detailed and critically evaluated, with a higher error rate using a set of scenario requirements. Our proposed method (AEMM) is critical for detecting and dealing with outliers in wireless sensor networks to achieve a low localisation error rate.
