    Effect of water on electrical properties of Refined, Bleached, and Deodorized Palm Oil (RBDPO) as electrical insulating material

    This paper describes the properties of refined, bleached, deodorized palm oil (RBDPO) as having the potential to be used as insulating liquid. There are several important properties such as electrical breakdown, dielectric dissipation factor, specific gravity, flash point, viscosity and pour point of RBDPO that was measured and compared to commercial mineral oil which is largely in current use as insulating liquid in power transformers. Experimental results of the electrical properties revealed that the average breakdown voltage of the RBDPO sample, without the addition of water at room temperature, is 13.368 kV. The result also revealed that due to effect of water, the breakdown voltage is lower than that of commercial mineral oil (Hyrax). However, the flash point and the pour point of RBDPO is very high compared to mineral oil thus giving it advantageous possibility to be used safely as insulating liquid. The results showed that RBDPO is greatly influenced by water, causing the breakdown voltage to decrease and the dissipation factor to increase; this is attributable to the high amounts of dissolved water

    Spacesuit Integrated Carbon Nanotube Dust Mitigation System For Lunar Exploration

    Lunar dust proved to be troublesome during the Apollo missions. The lunar dust comprises of fine particles, with electric charges imparted by solar winds and ultraviolet radiation. As such, it adheres readily, and easily penetrates through smallest crevices into mechanisms. During Apollo missions, the powdery dust substantially degraded the performance of spacesuits by abrading suit fabric and clogging seals. Dust also degraded other critical equipment such as rovers, thermal control and optical surfaces, solar arrays, and was thus shown to be a major issue for surface operations. Even inside the lunar module, Apollo astronauts were exposed to this dust when they removed their dust coated spacesuits. This historical evidence from the Apollo missions has compelled NASA to identify dust mitigation as a critical path. This important environmental challenge must be overcome prior to sending humans back to the lunar surface and potentially to other surfaces such as Mars and asteroids with dusty environments. Several concepts were successfully investigated by the international research community for preventing deposition of lunar dust on rigid surfaces (ex: solar cells, thermal radiators). However, applying these technologies for flexible surfaces and specifically to spacesuits has remained an open challenge, due to the complexity of the suit design, geometry, and dynamics. The research presented in this dissertation brings original contribution through the development and demonstration of the SPacesuit Integrated Carbon nanotube Dust Ejection/Removal (SPIcDER) system to protect spacesuits and other flexible surfaces from lunar dust. SPIcDER leverages the Electrodynamic Dust Shield (EDS) concept developed at NASA for use on solar cells. For the SPIcDER research, the EDS concept is customized for application on spacesuits and flexible surfaces utilizing novel materials and specialized design techniques. Furthermore, the performance of the active SPIcDER system is enhanced by integrating a passive technique based on Work Function Matching coating. SPIcDER aims for a self-cleaning spacesuit that can repel lunar dust. The SPIcDER research encompassed numerous demonstrations on coupons made of spacesuit outerlayer fabric, to validate the feasibility of the concept, and provide evidence that the SPIcDER system is capable of repelling over 85% of lunar dust simulant comprising of particles in the range of 10 m-75m, in ambient and vacuum conditions. Furthermore, the research presented in this dissertation proves the scalability of the SPIcDER technology on a full scale functional prototype of a spacesuit knee joint-section, and demonstrates its scaled functionality and performance using lunar dust simulant. It also comprises detailed numerical simulation and parametric analysis in ANSYS Maxwell and MATLAB for optimizing the integration of the SPIcDER system into the spacesuit outerlayer. The research concludes with analysis and experimental results on design, manufacturability, operational performance, practicality of application and astronaut safety. The research aims primarily towards spacesuit dust contamination. The SPIcDER technology developed in this research is however versatile, that can be optimized to a wide range of flexible surfaces for space and terrain applications-such as exploration missions to asteroids, Mars and dust-prone applications on Earth

    Effects Of Pulsation Frequency On Trailing Edge Plasma Actuators For Flight Control

    This thesis details the aerodynamic testing of a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma actuator operating over a separation step created at the trailing edge of a modified NACA 0012 aerofoil. The work focuses specifically on the use of pulsed or interrupted plasma actuation as opposed to continuously driven actuation, to increase the change in the lift produced by activating the system. The behaviour of the actuation system is characterised in a lamina flow regime at a Reynolds number of 1.33 x 105 using force balance measurements. At zero incidence the actuator produced a peak change in CL of approximately 0.015. However, this result is sensitive to changes in the interruption frequency of the plasma, by changing the plasma drive waveform the system was able to produce both positive and negative changes in lift. A relationship was identified between the change in CL produced and the ratio of the plasma interruption frequency to the natural vortex shedding frequency. This effect was investigated using both time averaged particle image velocimetry (PIV) and instantaneous phase locked PIV images captured in sequence throughout the plasma interruption cycle. The phase locked images showed how variation in the pulsation frequency was able to produce bi-directional actuation by either constructively or destructively interfering with the vortex formation from the back of the separation step. This interference in turn altered the level of separation which was occurring, altering the degree of upwash in the wake and therefore the lift generated by the aerofoil. PIV images were also gathered for device operation at a Reynolds number of 2.3 x 104; this produced a much higher ratio of DBD jet energy to that of the freestream. These conditions showed modified actuator behaviour due to the increased authority over the flow. However, the data still showed a strong interdependence on the reinforcement or destruction of the vortex street by the actuator interruption. Furthermore, work was undertaken to develop an actuator topology based on thin metallised films along with a dielectric which was hardened against the chemical and electrical stresses present in a functioning DBD device. The failure mechanisms of metallised film actuators were investigated, and actuators with lifetimes exceeding 8 hours were demonstrated. A manufacture method for a silicon polymer (PDMS) – Kapton® laminate is detailed; this is shown to be highly resistant to both electrical breakdown and chemical attack by the oxygen plasma

    Integrated CMOS Capacitance Sensor And Microactuator Control Circuits For On-Chip Cell Monitoring

    "Cell Clinics," CMOS/MEMS hybrid microsystems for on-chip investigation of biological cells, are currently being engineered for a broad spectrum of applications including olfactory sensing, pathogen detection, cytotoxicity screening and biocompatibility characterization. In support of this effort, this research makes two primary contributions towards designing the cell-based lab-on-a-chip systems. Firstly it develops CMOS capacitance sensors for characterizing cell-related properties including cell-surface attachment, cell health and growth. Assessing these properties is crucial to all kinds of cell applications. The CMOS sensors measure substrate coupling capacitances of anchorage-dependent cells cultured on-chip in a standard in vitro environment. The biophysical phenomenon underlying the capacitive behavior of cells is the counterionic polarization around the insulating cell bodies when exposed to weak, low frequency electric fields. The measured capacitance depends on a variety of factors related to the cell, its growth environment and the supporting substrate. These include membrane integrity, morphology, adhesion strength and substrate proximity. The demonstrated integrated cell sensing technique is non-invasive, easy-to-use and offers the unique advantage of automated real time cell monitoring without the need for disruptive external forces or biochemical labeling. On top of the silicon-based cell sensing platform, the cell clinics microsystem comprises MEMS structures forming an array of lidded microvials for confining single cells or small cell groups within controllable microenvironments in close proximity to the sensor sites. The opening and closing of the microvial lids are controlled by actuator hinges employing an electroactive polymer material that can electrochemically actuate. In macro-scale setups such electrochemical actuation reactions are controlled by an electronic instrument called potentiostat. In order to enable system miniaturization and enhance portability of cell clinics, this research makes its second contribution by implementing and demonstrating a CMOS potentiostat module for in situ control of the MEMS actuators
