A Network Resource Allocation Recommendation Method with An Improved Similarity Measure
Recommender systems have been acknowledged as efficacious tools for managing
information overload. Nevertheless, conventional algorithms adopted in such
systems primarily emphasize precise recommendations and, consequently, overlook
other vital aspects like the coverage, diversity, and novelty of items. This
approach results in less exposure for long-tail items. In this paper, to
personalize the recommendations and allocate recommendation resources more
purposively, a method named PIM+RA is proposed. This method utilizes a
bipartite network that incorporates self-connecting edges and weights.
Furthermore, an improved Pearson correlation coefficient is employed for better
redistribution. The evaluation of PIM+RA demonstrates a significant enhancement
not only in accuracy but also in coverage, diversity, and novelty of the
recommendation. It leads to a better balance in recommendation frequency by
providing effective exposure to long-tail items, while allowing customized
parameters to adjust the recommendation list bias

Isomorphic effects of managerial and directoral career paths
The extensive array of interlocking directorate research remains near-exclusively cross-sectional or comparative cross-sectional in nature. While this has been fruitful in identifying persistent structures of inter-organisational relationships evidence of the impact of these structures on organisational performance or activity has been more limited. This should not be surprising because, by their nature, relationships have strong longitudinal and dynamic qualities that are likely to be difficult to isolate through cross-sectional approaches. Clearly, managerial practice is inevitably strongly conditioned by the specific contingencies of the time and the information available through networks of colleagues and advisers (particularly at board level) at the time. But managerial and directoral capabilities and mental sets are also developed over time, particularly through previous experiences in these roles and the formation of long-lasting 'strong' and 'weak' relationships. This paper tests the influence of three longitudinal dimensions of managers and directors' relationships on a set of indicators of financial performance, drawing from a large dataset of detailing historic board membership of UK firms. It finds evidence of isomorphic processes through these channels and establishes that the longitudinal design considerably enhances the detection of performance effects from directorate interlocks. More broadly, the research has implications for the conception of collective action and the constitution of 'community'
Localizing the media, locating ourselves: a critical comparative analysis of socio-spatial sorting in locative media platforms (Google AND Flickr 2009-2011)
In this thesis I explore media geocoding (i.e., geotagging or georeferencing),
the process of inscribing the media with geographic information. A process
that enables distinct forms of producing, storing, and distributing information
based on location. Historically, geographic information technologies have
served a biopolitical function producing knowledge of populations. In their
current guise as locative media platforms, these systems build rich
databases of places facilitated by user-generated geocoded media. These
geoindexes render places, and users of these services, this thesis argues,
subject to novel forms of computational modelling and economic capture.
Thus, the possibility of tying information, people and objects to location sets
the conditions to the emergence of new communicative practices as well as
new forms of governmentality (management of populations). This project is
an attempt to develop an understanding of the socio-economic forces and
media regimes structuring contemporary forms of location-aware
communication, by carrying out a comparative analysis of two of the main
current location-enabled platforms: Google and Flickr. Drawing from the
medium-specific approach to media analysis characteristic of the subfield of
Software Studies, together with the methodological apparatus of Cultural
Analytics (data mining and visualization methods), the thesis focuses on
examining how social space is coded and computed in these systems. In
particular, it looks at the databases’ underlying ontologies supporting the
platforms' geocoding capabilities and their respective algorithmic logics. In
the final analysis the thesis argues that the way social space is translated in
the form of POIs (Points of Interest) and business-biased categorizations, as
well as the geodemographical ordering underpinning the way it is computed,
are pivotal if we were to understand what kind of socio-spatial relations are
actualized in these systems, and what modalities of governing urban mobility
are enabled
Semantic discovery and reuse of business process patterns
Patterns currently play an important role in modern information systems (IS) development and their use has mainly been restricted to the design and implementation phases of the development lifecycle. Given the increasing significance of business modelling in IS development, patterns have the potential of providing a viable solution for promoting reusability of recurrent generalized models in the very early stages of development. As a statement of research-in-progress this paper focuses on business process patterns and proposes an initial methodological framework for the discovery and reuse of business process patterns within the IS development lifecycle. The framework borrows ideas from the domain engineering literature and proposes the use of semantics to drive both the discovery of patterns as well as their reuse

The cause, development and outcome of word-of-mouth marketing: with particular reference to WOM volume, valence and the modeling of viral marketing
Viral marketing is a form of online word-of-mouth (WOM) communication in which individuals are encouraged to pass on promotional messages through social websites. With the growing popularity of online social websites, viral marketing has increasingly garnered attention of marketers and marketing researchers alike. The two most important WOM attributes highlighted in the extant literature are volume and valence. This thesis looked into the cause, development and outcome of WOM marketing and provided computational models for forecasting the development of WOM volume and valence of viral marketing in social websites. With the data extracted from large-scale web-crawling activities, through a series of computer simulation experiments comparable to social websites, the author developed models to predict WOM volume and valence in viral marketing. The model for predicting WOM volume in viral marketing used theories of network topologies. The model for predicting WOM valence in viral marketing used an artificial neural network model. The author discussed the insights from the findings and suggested viral marketing strategies to optimize the performance of WOM volume and valence in social websites. A key contribution of this thesis is the new approaches of modeling and data collection for WOM volume and valance forecasting in viral marketing
Recent Advances in Signal Processing
The signal processing task is a very critical issue in the majority of new technological inventions and challenges in a variety of applications in both science and engineering fields. Classical signal processing techniques have largely worked with mathematical models that are linear, local, stationary, and Gaussian. They have always favored closed-form tractability over real-world accuracy. These constraints were imposed by the lack of powerful computing tools. During the last few decades, signal processing theories, developments, and applications have matured rapidly and now include tools from many areas of mathematics, computer science, physics, and engineering. This book is targeted primarily toward both students and researchers who want to be exposed to a wide variety of signal processing techniques and algorithms. It includes 27 chapters that can be categorized into five different areas depending on the application at hand. These five categories are ordered to address image processing, speech processing, communication systems, time-series analysis, and educational packages respectively. The book has the advantage of providing a collection of applications that are completely independent and self-contained; thus, the interested reader can choose any chapter and skip to another without losing continuity
