    Development of artificial neural network-based object detection algorithms for low-cost hardware devices

    Finally, the fourth work was published in the “WCCI” conference in 2020 and consisted of an individuals' position estimation algorithm based on a novel neural network model for environments with forbidden regions, named “Forbidden Regions Growing Neural Gas”.The human brain is the most complex, powerful and versatile learning machine ever known. Consequently, many scientists of various disciplines are fascinated by its structures and information processing methods. Due to the quality and quantity of the information extracted from the sense of sight, image is one of the main information channels used by humans. However, the massive amount of video footage generated nowadays makes it difficult to process those data fast enough manually. Thus, computer vision systems represent a fundamental tool in the extraction of information from digital images, as well as a major challenge for scientists and engineers. This thesis' primary objective is automatic foreground object detection and classification through digital image analysis, using artificial neural network-based techniques, specifically designed and optimised to be deployed in low-cost hardware devices. This objective will be complemented by developing individuals' movement estimation methods by using unsupervised learning and artificial neural network-based models. The cited objectives have been addressed through a research work illustrated in four publications supporting this thesis. The first one was published in the “ICAE” journal in 2018 and consists of a neural network-based movement detection system for Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras deployed in a Raspberry Pi board. The second one was published in the “WCCI” conference in 2018 and consists of a deep learning-based automatic video surveillance system for PTZ cameras deployed in low-cost hardware. The third one was published in the “ICAE” journal in 2020 and consists of an anomalous foreground object detection and classification system for panoramic cameras, based on deep learning and supported by low-cost hardware

    Semantic Object Prediction and Spatial Sound Super-Resolution with Binaural Sounds

    Humans can robustly recognize and localize objects by integrating visual and auditory cues. While machines are able to do the same now with images, less work has been done with sounds. This work develops an approach for dense semantic labelling of sound-making objects, purely based on binaural sounds. We propose a novel sensor setup and record a new audio-visual dataset of street scenes with eight professional binaural microphones and a 360 degree camera. The co-existence of visual and audio cues is leveraged for supervision transfer. In particular, we employ a cross-modal distillation framework that consists of a vision `teacher' method and a sound `student' method -- the student method is trained to generate the same results as the teacher method. This way, the auditory system can be trained without using human annotations. We also propose two auxiliary tasks namely, a) a novel task on Spatial Sound Super-resolution to increase the spatial resolution of sounds, and b) dense depth prediction of the scene. We then formulate the three tasks into one end-to-end trainable multi-tasking network aiming to boost the overall performance. Experimental results on the dataset show that 1) our method achieves promising results for semantic prediction and the two auxiliary tasks; and 2) the three tasks are mutually beneficial -- training them together achieves the best performance and 3) the number and orientations of microphones are both important.     Detection of Motorcycles in Urban Traffic Using Video Analysis: A Review

    Motorcycles are Vulnerable Road Users (VRU) and as such, in addition to bicycles and pedestrians, they are the traffic actors most affected by accidents in urban areas. Automatic video processing for urban surveillance cameras has the potential to effectively detect and track these road users. The present review focuses on algorithms used for detection and tracking of motorcycles, using the surveillance infrastructure provided by CCTV cameras. Given the importance of results achieved by Deep Learning theory in the field of computer vision, the use of such techniques for detection and tracking of motorcycles is also reviewed. The paper ends by describing the performance measures generally used, publicly available datasets (introducing the Urban Motorbike Dataset (UMD) with quantitative evaluation results for different detectors), discussing the challenges ahead and presenting a set of conclusions with proposed future work in this evolving area

    Urban traffic analysis through an UAV

    In order to realize a precise and accurate traffic study, a method to evaluate the real traffic flow conditions in urban areas based on videos acquired by an UAV, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, is proposed. In this way it does not require additional equipment to earth and, not being invasive, does not influence the driver behavior. This paper presents the results obtained in terms of vehicular traffic flow along a way in the city of Palermo. The results have been compared to experiments using macroscopic simulation models and the eventually differences have been discussed
