Learning to Find Eye Region Landmarks for Remote Gaze Estimation in Unconstrained Settings
Conventional feature-based and model-based gaze estimation methods have
proven to perform well in settings with controlled illumination and specialized
cameras. In unconstrained real-world settings, however, such methods are
surpassed by recent appearance-based methods due to difficulties in modeling
factors such as illumination changes and other visual artifacts. We present a
novel learning-based method for eye region landmark localization that enables
conventional methods to be competitive to latest appearance-based methods.
Despite having been trained exclusively on synthetic data, our method exceeds
the state of the art for iris localization and eye shape registration on
real-world imagery. We then use the detected landmarks as input to iterative
model-fitting and lightweight learning-based gaze estimation methods. Our
approach outperforms existing model-fitting and appearance-based methods in the
context of person-independent and personalized gaze estimation
Unobtrusive and pervasive video-based eye-gaze tracking
Eye-gaze tracking has long been considered a desktop technology that finds its use inside the traditional office setting, where the operating conditions may be controlled. Nonetheless, recent advancements in mobile technology and a growing interest in capturing natural human behaviour have motivated an emerging interest in tracking eye movements within unconstrained real-life conditions, referred to as pervasive eye-gaze tracking. This critical review focuses on emerging passive and unobtrusive video-based eye-gaze tracking methods in recent literature, with the aim to identify different research avenues that are being followed in response to the challenges of pervasive eye-gaze tracking. Different eye-gaze tracking approaches are discussed in order to bring out their strengths and weaknesses, and to identify any limitations, within the context of pervasive eye-gaze tracking, that have yet to be considered by the computer vision community.peer-reviewe
GazeDrone: Mobile Eye-Based Interaction in Public Space Without Augmenting the User
Gaze interaction holds a lot of promise for seamless human-computer interaction. At the same time, current wearable mobile eye trackers require user augmentation that negatively impacts natural user behavior while remote trackers require users to position themselves within a confined tracking range. We present GazeDrone, the first system that combines a camera-equipped aerial drone with a computational method to detect sidelong glances for spontaneous (calibration-free) gaze-based interaction with surrounding pervasive systems (e.g., public displays). GazeDrone does not require augmenting each user with on-body sensors and allows interaction from arbitrary positions, even while moving. We demonstrate that drone-supported gaze interaction is feasible and accurate for certain movement types. It is well-perceived by users, in particular while interacting from a fixed position as well as while moving orthogonally or diagonally to a display. Fast and Accurate Algorithm for Eye Localization for Gaze Tracking in Low Resolution Images
Iris centre localization in low-resolution visible images is a challenging
problem in computer vision community due to noise, shadows, occlusions, pose
variations, eye blinks, etc. This paper proposes an efficient method for
determining iris centre in low-resolution images in the visible spectrum. Even
low-cost consumer-grade webcams can be used for gaze tracking without any
additional hardware. A two-stage algorithm is proposed for iris centre
localization. The proposed method uses geometrical characteristics of the eye.
In the first stage, a fast convolution based approach is used for obtaining the
coarse location of iris centre (IC). The IC location is further refined in the
second stage using boundary tracing and ellipse fitting. The algorithm has been
evaluated in public databases like BioID, Gi4E and is found to outperform the

Enabling Depth-driven Visual Attention on the iCub Humanoid Robot: Instructions for Use and New Perspectives
The importance of depth perception in the interactions that humans have
within their nearby space is a well established fact. Consequently, it is also
well known that the possibility of exploiting good stereo information would
ease and, in many cases, enable, a large variety of attentional and interactive
behaviors on humanoid robotic platforms. However, the difficulty of computing
real-time and robust binocular disparity maps from moving stereo cameras often
prevents from relying on this kind of cue to visually guide robots' attention
and actions in real-world scenarios. The contribution of this paper is
two-fold: first, we show that the Efficient Large-scale Stereo Matching
algorithm (ELAS) by A. Geiger et al. 2010 for computation of the disparity map
is well suited to be used on a humanoid robotic platform as the iCub robot;
second, we show how, provided with a fast and reliable stereo system,
implementing relatively challenging visual behaviors in natural settings can
require much less effort. As a case of study we consider the common situation
where the robot is asked to focus the attention on one object close in the
scene, showing how a simple but effective disparity-based segmentation solves
the problem in this case. Indeed this example paves the way to a variety of
other similar applications
Accurate Eye Tracking from Dense 3D Surface Reconstructions using Single-Shot Deflectometry
Eye-tracking plays a crucial role in the development of virtual reality
devices, neuroscience research, and psychology. Despite its significance in
numerous applications, achieving an accurate, robust, and fast eye-tracking
solution remains a considerable challenge for current state-of-the-art methods.
While existing reflection-based techniques (e.g., "glint tracking") are
considered the most accurate, their performance is limited by their reliance on
sparse 3D surface data acquired solely from the cornea surface. In this paper,
we rethink the way how specular reflections can be used for eye tracking: We
propose a novel method for accurate and fast evaluation of the gaze direction
that exploits teachings from single-shot phase-measuring-deflectometry (PMD).
In contrast to state-of-the-art reflection-based methods, our method acquires
dense 3D surface information of both cornea and sclera within only one single
camera frame (single-shot). Improvements in acquired reflection surface
points("glints") of factors are easily achievable. We show the
feasibility of our approach with experimentally evaluated gaze errors of only
