    Biomedical engineering is currently relatively wide scientific area which has been constantly bringing innovations with an objective to support and improve all areas of medicine such as therapy, diagnostics and rehabilitation. It holds a strong position also in natural and biological sciences. In the terms of application, biomedical engineering is present at almost all technical universities where some of them are targeted for the research and development in this area. The presented book brings chosen outputs and results of research and development tasks, often supported by important world or European framework programs or grant agencies. The knowledge and findings from the area of biomaterials, bioelectronics, bioinformatics, biomedical devices and tools or computer support in the processes of diagnostics and therapy are defined in a way that they bring both basic information to a reader and also specific outputs with a possible further use in research and development

    Modular Optical Wireless Elements

    Optical wireless has gained attention in recent years as an e cient and secure way to provide broadband connectivity to mobile platforms, isolated communities, and crowded public events. Companies like NASA, Google, Facebook, and others have demonstrated its potential. However, current optical wireless technology remains mostly heavy, bulky, and expensive, making it impractical for many scenarios and inaccessible to most students/researchers. This work presents the concept of Modular Optical Wireless Elements (MOWE), a novel system composed of multiple electrically interconnected optical modules (i.e., elements) forming a at or curved terminal that is inexpensive, lightweight, and easy-to-assemble. The technology enables cost-eff ective access to wide eld-of-view optical communication for last-mile broadband connectivity. Smart modules provide recon gurability, as well as local and central processing capabilities. The modules enable innovative short- and medium-range applications for free-space optics (FSO) in indoor communication and navigation, MIMO, and optical sensing, among others. This dissertation introduces the MOWE concept and provides in-depth information about modeling, analysis, hardware, and rmware, along with proof-of-concept examples and demonstrations. The notions of software-de ned optics and cognitive optics are introduced and analyzed in a MOWE context. Several experiments and case studies covering a wide spectrum of applications-from intelligent power control to passive beam steering-are presented in detail. This dissertation also discusses the future of MOWE technology and suggests possible improvements for high performance systems

    Engineering derivatives from biological systems for advanced aerospace applications

    The present study consisted of a literature survey, a survey of researchers, and a workshop on bionics. These tasks produced an extensive annotated bibliography of bionics research (282 citations), a directory of bionics researchers, and a workshop report on specific bionics research topics applicable to space technology. These deliverables are included as Appendix A, Appendix B, and Section 5.0, respectively. To provide organization to this highly interdisciplinary field and to serve as a guide for interested researchers, we have also prepared a taxonomy or classification of the various subelements of natural engineering systems. Finally, we have synthesized the results of the various components of this study into a discussion of the most promising opportunities for accelerated research, seeking solutions which apply engineering principles from natural systems to advanced aerospace problems. A discussion of opportunities within the areas of materials, structures, sensors, information processing, robotics, autonomous systems, life support systems, and aeronautics is given. Following the conclusions are six discipline summaries that highlight the potential benefits of research in these areas for NASA's space technology programs

    Active touch sensing in pinnipeds

    Active touch sensing in humans is characterised by making purposive movements with their fingertips. These movements are task-specific to maximise the relevant information gathered from an object. In whisker-touch sensing, previous research has suggested that whisker movements are purposive, but no one has ever examined task-specific whisker movements in any animal. Pinnipeds are whisker specialists, with long, mobile, sensitive whiskers and diverse whisker morphologies. The aim of this PhD is to investigate active touch sensing in Pinnipeds (seals, sea lions and walrus), by: i) describing whisker morphology; ii) comparing and quantifying whisker movements; and iii) characterising task-dependency of whisker movements during texture, size and luminance discrimination tasks. Pinnipeds with long, numerous whiskers, such as California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) and Stellar sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) have larger infraorbital foramen (IOF) sizes and therefore, more sensitive whiskers. The IOF being a small hole in the skull, allowing the infraorbital nerve (ION) to pass through, which supplies sensation to the whiskers. Comparing whisker movements in Harbor seals (Phoca vitulina), California sea lions and Pacific walrus (Odobenidae rosmarus), showed these species all protracted their whiskers forwards and oriented their head towards a moving fish stimulus. However, California sea lions moved their whiskers more than the other species, and independently of the head. Due to the movement capabilities and sensitivity of whiskers in California sea lions, this species was used to investigate whether whiskers can be moved in a task-specific way. Results suggested that California sea lions make task-specific movements, by feeling around the edge of different-sized shapes, and focussing and spreading their whiskers on the centre of different-textured shapes. Therefore, California sea lion whiskers are controlled like a true active touch sensory system, similar to human fingertips. I suggest that active touch sensing is likely to efficiently guide foraging and prey capture in dark, murky waters in these animals. Moreover, the complexity of California sea lion whisker movements and their subsequent behaviours makes them a good candidate from which to further investigate animal decision-making, perception and cognition

    Aircraft Attitude Estimation Using Panoramic Images

    This thesis investigates the problem of reliably estimating attitude from panoramic imagery in cluttered environments. Accurate attitude is an essential input to the stabilisation systems of autonomous aerial vehicles. A new camera system which combines a CCD camera, UltraViolet (UV) filters and a panoramic mirror-lens is designed. Drawing on biological inspiration from the Ocelli organ possessed by certain insects, UV filtered images are used to enhance the contrast between the sky and ground and mitigate the effect of the sun. A novel method for real–time horizon-based attitude estimation using panoramic image that is capable of estimating an aircraft pitch and roll at a low altitude in the presence of sun, clouds and occluding features such as tree, building, is developed. Also, a new method for panoramic sky/ground thresholding, consisting of a horizon– and a sun–tracking system which works effectively even when the horizon line is difficult to detect by normal thresholding methods due to flares and other effects from the presence of the sun in the image, is proposed. An algorithm for estimating the attitude from three–dimensional mapping of the horizon projected onto a 3D plane is developed. The use of optic flow to determine pitch and roll rates is investigated using the panoramic image and image interpolation algorithm (I2A). Two methods which employ sensor fusion techniques, Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), are used to fuse unfiltered measurements from inertial sensors and the vision system. The EKF estimates gyroscope biases and also the attitude. The ANN fuses the optic flow and horizon–based attitude to provide smooth attitude estimations. The results obtained from different parts of the research are tested and validated through simulations and real flight tests

    Learning cognitive maps: Finding useful structure in an uncertain world

    In this chapter we will describe the central mechanisms that influence how people learn about large-scale space. We will focus particularly on how these mechanisms enable people to effectively cope with both the uncertainty inherent in a constantly changing world and also with the high information content of natural environments. The major lessons are that humans get by with a less is more approach to building structure, and that they are able to quickly adapt to environmental changes thanks to a range of general purpose mechanisms. By looking at abstract principles, instead of concrete implementation details, it is shown that the study of human learning can provide valuable lessons for robotics. Finally, these issues are discussed in the context of an implementation on a mobile robot. © 2007 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg
