    A Review on Precise Orbit Determination of Various LEO Satellites

    The need for precise orbit determination (POD) has grown significantly due to the increased amount of space-based activities appearing at an accelerating pace. POD has a positive contribution in achieving the requirements of Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite mission which includes improved reliability and continuity. In this paper, we will review the POD approaches of various LEO satellites and discuss the accuracy levels obtained as well as the methods and algorithms used to achieve the POD of LEO satellites. With recent advancements in miniature space technology, a greater number of smaller low-cost satellites are launched into the LEO for various purposes. Furthermore, development in the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and chipsets played a vital role in revolutionizing the GNSS receiver technology. Lower-cost, smaller size but yet high performing GNSS receivers need to be implemented also in CubeSats in addition to the various terrestrial applications. POD using onboard GNSS receiver data will benefit the development of several upcoming space applications in the field of navigation systems, telecommunication, remote sensing, and earth observation. In the future, it is anticipated that LEO-based satellites enabled by POD can also offer positioning capabilities that will enhance GNSS and create vast opportunities for users with new features and possibilities to the navigation field.© 2021 Copyright for this paper by its authors.     Precise orbit determination of LEO satellites : a systematic review

    The need for precise orbit determination (POD) has grown significantly due to the increased amount of space-based activities taking place at an accelerating pace. Accurate POD positively contributes to achieving the requirements of Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite missions, including improved tracking, reliability and continuity. This research aims to systematically analyze the LEO–POD in four aspects: (i) data sources used; (ii) POD technique implemented; (iii) validation method applied; (iv) accuracy level obtained. We also present the most used GNSS systems, satellite missions, processing procedures and ephemeris. The review includes studies on LEO–POD algorithms/methods and software published in the last two decades (2000–2021). To this end, 137 primary studies relevant to achieving the objective of this research were identified. After the investigation of these primary studies, it was found that several types of POD techniques have been employed in the POD of LEO satellites, with a clear trend observed for techniques using reduced-dynamic model, least-squares solvers, dual-frequency signals with undifferenced phase and code observations in post-processing mode. This review provides an understanding of the various POD techniques, dataset utilized, validation techniques, and accuracy level of LEO satellites, which have interest to developers of small satellites, new researchers and practitioners.© The Author(s) 2023.     Development of the TanDEM-X Calibration Concept: Analysis of Systematic Errors

    The TanDEM-X mission, result of the partnership between the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and Astrium GmbH, opens a new era in spaceborne radar remote sensing. The first bistatic satellite synthetic aperture radar mission is formed by flying the TanDEM-X and TerraSAR-X in a closely controlled helix formation. The primary mission goal is the derivation of a high-precision global digital elevation model (DEM) according to High-Resolution Terrain Information (HRTI) level 3 accuracy. The finite precision of the baseline knowledge and uncompensated radar instrument drifts introduce errors that may compromise the height accuracy requirements. By means of a DEM calibration, which uses absolute height references, and the information provided by adjacent interferogram overlaps, these height errors can be minimized. This paper summarizes the exhaustive studies of the nature of the residual-error sources that have been carried out during the development of the DEM calibration concept. Models for these errors are set up and simulations of the resulting DEM height error for different scenarios provide the basis for the development of a successful DEM calibration strategy for the TanDEM-X mission

    Orbit determination of Sentinel-6A using the Galileo high accuracy service test signal

    The High Accuracy Service (HAS) is an upcoming addition to the Galileo service portfolio that offers free correction data for precise point positioning in real-time. Beyond terrestrial and aeronautical applications, precise orbit determination (POD) of satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) has been proposed as a potential use case for HAS corrections in view of their global availability. Based on HAS data collected during a test campaign in September 2021, the benefit of HAS corrections is assessed for real-time, onboard navigation as well as near real-time POD on the ground using GNSS observations of the Sentinel-6A LEO satellite. Compared to real-time POD using only broadcast ephemerides, performance improvements of about 40%, 10%, and 5% in terms of 3D position error can already be achieved for GPS-only, GPS + Galileo, and Galileo-only navigation. While Galileo processing benefits only moderately from the HAS correction data during the early tests in view of an already excellent Open Service performance, their use is highly advantageous for GPS processing and enables dual-constellation navigation with balanced contributions of both GNSSs for improved robustness. For near real-time offline POD, HAS corrections offer reduced latency or accuracy compared to established ultra-rapid GNSS orbit and clock products as well as independence from external sources

    Precise velocity and acceleration determination using a standalone GPS receiver in real time

    Precise velocity and acceleration information is required for many real time applications. A standalone GPS receiver can be used to derive such information; however, there are many unsolved problems in this regard. This thesis establishes the theoretical basis for precise velocity and acceleration determination using a standalone GPS receiver in real time. An intensive investigation has been conducted into the Doppler effect in GPS. A highly accurate Doppler shift one-way observation equation is developed based on a comprehensive error analysis of each contributing factor including relativistic effects. Various error mitigation/elimination methods have been developed to improve the measurement accuracy of both the Doppler and Doppler-rate. Algorithms and formulae are presented to obtain real-time satellite velocity and acceleration in the ECEF system from the broadcast ephemeris. Low order IIR differentiators are designed to derive Doppler and Doppler-rate measurements from the raw GPS data for real-time applications. Abnormalities and their corresponding treatments in real-time operations are also discussed. In addition to the velocity and acceleration determination, this thesis offers a good tool for GPS measurement modelling and for design of interpolators, differentiators, as well as Kalman filters. The relativistic terms presented by this thesis suggest that it is possible to measure the geopotential directly using Doppler shift measurements. This may lead to a foundation for the development of a next generation satellite system for geodesy in the future

    GNSS-Based Navigation for Lunar Missions

    Numerous applications, not only Earth-based, but also space-based, have strengthened the interest of the international scientific community in using Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSSs) as navigation systems for space missions that require good accuracy and low operating costs. Indeed, already used in Low Earth Orbits (LEOs), GNSS based-navigation GNSS-based navigation systems can maximize the autonomy of a spacecraft while reducing the costs of ground operations, allowing for budget-limited missions of micro- and nanosatellites. This is why GNSS is also very attractive for applications in higher Earth orbits up to the Moon, such as in Moon Transfer Orbits (MTOs). However, while GNSS receivers have already been exploited with success for LEOs, their use in higher Earth orbits above the GNSS constellation is extremely challenging, particularly on the way from the Earth to the Moon, characterized by weaker signals with wider gain variability, larger dynamic ranges resulting in higher Doppler and Doppler rates, critically lower satellite signal availability, and poorer satellite-to-user geometry. In this context, the first research objective and achievement of this PhD research is a feasibility study of GNSS as an autonomous navigation system to reach the Moon, and the determination of the requirements for the design of a code-based GNSS receiver for such a mission. The most efficient combinations of signals transmitted by the GPS, Galileo, and combined GPS-Galileo constellations have been identified by analyzing the theoretical achievable signal acquisition and tracking sensitivities, the resultant constellation availability, the pseudorange error factors, and the geometry error factor and accordingly the achievable navigation performance The results show that GNSS signals can be tracked up to Moon altitude, but not with the current GNSS receiver technology for terrestrial use. The second research objective and achievement is the design and implementation of a GNSS receiver proof-of-concept capable of providing GNSS observations onboard a space vehicle orbiting up to Moon altitude. This research work describes the hardware architecture, the high-sensitivity acquisition and tracking modules and the standalone single-epoch navigation performance of the developed GPS L1 C/A hard-ware receiver, named the WeakHEO receiver. Although they can still be collected, GNSS observations at Moon altitude, if not filtered, but simply used to compute a single-epoch least-squares solution, lead to a very coarse navigation accuracy, on the order of 1 to 10 km, depending on the number and type of signals successfully processed. Therefore, the third and main research objective and achievement is the design and implementation of a GNSS-based orbital filter (OF) determination unit, based on an extended Kalman filter (EKF) and an orbital forces model, able to significantly improve the achievable navigation performance and also to aid acquisition and tracking modules of the GNSS receiver. Simulation results of the OF performance when processing simulated GPS and Galileo observations, but also real GPS L1 C/A observations provided by the WeakHEO receiver (when connected in a hardware in the loop configuration to a full constellation GNSS radio frequency signal simulator), show a positioning accuracy at Moon altitude of a few hundred meters

    Preliminary GN&C Design for the On-Orbit Autonomous Assembly of Nanosatellite Demonstration Mission

    Small spacecraft autonomous rendezvous and docking (ARD) is an essential technology for future space structure assembly missions. The On-orbit Autonomous Assembly of Nanosatellites (OAAN) team at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) intends to demonstrate the technology to autonomously dock two nanosatellites to form an integrated system. The team has developed a novel magnetic capture and latching mechanism that allows for docking of two CubeSats without precise sensors and actuators. The proposed magnetic docking hardware not only provides the means to latch the CubeSats, but it also significantly increases the likelihood of successful docking in the presence of relative attitude and position errors. The simplicity of the design allows it to be implemented on many CubeSat rendezvous missions. Prior to demonstrating the docking subsystem capabilities on orbit, the GN&C subsystem should have a robust design such that it is capable of bringing the CubeSats from an arbitrary initial separation distance of as many as a few thousand kilometers down to a few meters. The main OAAN Mission can be separated into the following phases: 1) Launch, checkout, and drift, 2) Far-Field Rendezvous or Drift Recovery, 3) Proximity Operations, 4) Docking. This paper discusses the preliminary GN&C design and simulation results for each phase of the mission

    Topside Ionospheric Tomography Exclusively Based on LEO POD GPS Carrier Phases: Application to Autonomous LEO DCB Estimation

    This paper presents a novel technique to estimate DCBs from GPS transmitters and receivers on-board Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. The technique consists of obtaining the DCBs as residuals from the difference between the ionospheric combination of the code and the associated ionospheric delay. The ionospheric delay is computed with TOMION, a background-model-free ionospheric tomographic technique based on dual-frequency GPS carrier phase data only, and solved with a Kalman filter. Thus, DCBs are also estimated epoch-wise from the LEO Precise Orbit Determination (POD) GPS receiver as a secondary product. The results for GPS satellite DCBs, obtained exclusively from the three MetOp LEO POD GPS receivers over four consecutive weeks, are in full agreement (i.e., at the level of a few tenths of ns) with those reported independently with other techniques from hundreds of ground-based receivers exclusively, by JPL and CODE analysis centers
