    GNSS transpolar earth reflectometry exploriNg system (G-TERN): mission concept

    The global navigation satellite system (GNSS) Transpolar Earth Reflectometry exploriNg system (G-TERN) was proposed in response to ESA's Earth Explorer 9 revised call by a team of 33 multi-disciplinary scientists. The primary objective of the mission is to quantify at high spatio-temporal resolution crucial characteristics, processes and interactions between sea ice, and other Earth system components in order to advance the understanding and prediction of climate change and its impacts on the environment and society. The objective is articulated through three key questions. 1) In a rapidly changing Arctic regime and under the resilient Antarctic sea ice trend, how will highly dynamic forcings and couplings between the various components of the ocean, atmosphere, and cryosphere modify or influence the processes governing the characteristics of the sea ice cover (ice production, growth, deformation, and melt)? 2) What are the impacts of extreme events and feedback mechanisms on sea ice evolution? 3) What are the effects of the cryosphere behaviors, either rapidly changing or resiliently stable, on the global oceanic and atmospheric circulation and mid-latitude extreme events? To contribute answering these questions, G-TERN will measure key parameters of the sea ice, the oceans, and the atmosphere with frequent and dense coverage over polar areas, becoming a “dynamic mapper”of the ice conditions, the ice production, and the loss in multiple time and space scales, and surrounding environment. Over polar areas, the G-TERN will measure sea ice surface elevation (<;10 cm precision), roughness, and polarimetry aspects at 30-km resolution and 3-days full coverage. G-TERN will implement the interferometric GNSS reflectometry concept, from a single satellite in near-polar orbit with capability for 12 simultaneous observations. Unlike currently orbiting GNSS reflectometry missions, the G-TERN uses the full GNSS available bandwidth to improve its ranging measurements. The lifetime would be 2025-2030 or optimally 2025-2035, covering key stages of the transition toward a nearly ice-free Arctic Ocean in summer.     GNSS-R as a source of opportunity for remote sensing of the cryosphere

    This work evaluates the potential use of signals from the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) that scatter off the Earth surface for the retrieval of geophysical information from the cryosphere. For this purpose, the present study is based on data collected with a dedicated reflectometry GNSS receiver during two field campaigns, which were focused on two types of characteristic surfaces of the cryosphere: thin sea ice covers and thick dry snow accumulations. During the first experiment, the complete process of formation, evolution and melting of sea ice was monitorized for more than seven months in a bay located in Greenland. This type of ice is typically characterized by its thickness, concentration and roughness. Different observables from GNSS reflections are analyzed to try to infer these properties. The ice thickness is linked to the free-board level, defined as the height of the sea ice surface. Accurate phase altimetry is achieved, showing good agreement with an Arctic tide model. In addition, the long term results of ellipsoidal height retrievals are consistent with the evolution of the ice surface temperature product given by MODIS, which is a key parameter in the rate of growth of sea ice. On the other hand, the presence of salinity in the sea ice modifies its dielectric properties, resulting in different amplitude and phase for the co- and cross-polar components of the complex Fresnel coefficients. The polarimetric measurements obtained show good agreement with visual inspections of ice concentration from an Arctic weather station. Finally, the shape of the reflected signals and its phase dispersion are tested as potential signatures of surface roughness. For comparison, ice charts of the experimental area are employed. In particular, maximums in roughness given by the GNSS observables coincide with fast ice events. Fast ice is defined as ice anchored to the coast, where the tidal movements contribute to the development of strange patterns, cracks, and fissures on its surface, thus consistent with the GNSS-R roughness retrievals. The second experiment took place on Antarctica, monitoring a pristine snow area which is well-known for the calibration of remote sensing instruments. Due to the relative stability of the snow layers, the data acquisition was limited to ten continuous days. Interferometric beats were found after a first analysis of the amplitude from the collected signals, which were consistent with a multipath model where the reflector lies below the surface level. Motivated by these results, a forward model is developed that reconstructs the complex received signal as a sum of a finite number of reflections, coming from different snow layers (a snow density profile obtained from in-situ measurements). The interferometric information is then retrieved from the spectral analysis applied to time series from both real and modeled signals (lag-holograms). We find that the frequency bands predicted by the model are in general consistent with the data and the lag-holograms show repeatability for different days. Then, we attempt a proper inversion of the collected data to determine the dominant layers of the dry snow profile that contribute to L-band reflections, which are related to significant gradients of snow density/permittivity.Aquest treball avalua el possible ús dels senyals dels sistemes mundials de navegació per satèl lit (GNSS) que es reflecteixen a la superfície terrestre, per a l’extracció de la informació geofísica de la criosfera. Amb aquest propòsit, el present estudi es basa en dades recollides amb un reflectòmetre GNSS durant dues campanyes experimentals, centrades en dos tipus de superfícies característiques de la criosfera: cobertes de gel marí i gruixudes acumulacions de neu seca. En el primer experiment, el procés complet de formació, evolució i fusió del gel marí va ser monitoritzat durant més de set mesos a una badia situada a Groenlàndia. Aquest tipus de gel es caracteritza típicament amb el seu gruix, concentració i rugositat. Diferents observables de les reflexions GNSS són analitzats per tractar de fer una estimació d’aquestes propietats. El gruix de gel està relacionat amb el nivell de francbord, que a la seva vegada està relacionat amb l’alçada de la superfície de gel marí. S’ha aconseguit altimetria de fase precisa, que mostra correlació amb un model de marea de l’Àrtic. A més, els resultats a llarg termini de l’alçada elipsoidal segueixen l’evolució de les mesures de temperatura de superfície de gel donades per MODIS. La temperatura és un paràmetre clau en el ritme de creixement del gel marí. Per altra banda, la presència de sal a aquest tipus de gel modifica les seves propietats dielèctriques, el que implica variacions d’amplitud i fase per als coeficients de Fresnel complexos amb polaritzacions oposades. Les mesures polarimètriques obtingudes mostren concordança amb els valors de concentració de gel obtinguts des d’una estació meteorològica propera. Finalment, la forma de la senyal reflectida i la dispersió de la seva fase s’evaluen com a potencials indicadors de la rugositat de superfície. Per a la seva comparació, es fan servir mapes del gel de la zona experimental. En concret, els valors màxims a la rugositat estimada a partir pels observables GNSS coincideixen amb el gel fixe, que es refereix a gel ancorat a la costa, on els moviments de les marees contribueixen al desenvolupament de patrons estranys, esquerdes i fissures en la seva superfície. El segon experiment es va dur a terme a l’Antàrtida, monitoritzant una àrea de neu pristina que és ben coneguda per al calibratge d’instruments de teledetecció. A causa de la relativa estabilitat de les capes de neu, l’adquisició de dades es va limitar a deu dies consecutius. Es van trobar pulsacions interferomètriques a partir d’un primer anàlisi de l’amplitud de les senyals recollides, les quals eren compatibles amb un model de propagació multicamí a on el reflector es troba per sota del nivell de superfície. Com a conseqüència d’aquests resultats, s’ha desenvolupat un model que reconstrueix el senyal complexe rebut com la suma d’un nombre finit de reflexions, procedents de diferents capes de neu (determinat per mesures locals). La informació interferomètrica es recupera després de l’anàlisi espectral aplicat a les sèries temporals tant de les senyals reals, com de les modelades (lag-hologrames). Trobem que les bandes de freqüències predites pel model són en general consistents amb les dades i que els lag-hologrames mostren repetibilitat per dies diferents. Posteriorment, es realitza un anàlisi de les dades recollides per determinar les capes dominants del perfil de neu seca que contribueixen a les reflexions en banda L, i que a la seva vegada, estan relacionades amb gradents significatius de densitat/permitivitat.Este trabajo evalúa el posible uso de las señales de los sistemas globales de navegación por satélite (GNSS) que se reflejan en la superficie terrestre para la extracción de información geofísica de la criosfera. Con este propósito, el presente estudio se basa en datos recogidos con un reflectómetro GNSS durante dos campañas experimentales, centradas en dos tipos de superficies características de la criosfera: capas de hielo marino y gruesas acumulaciones de nieve seca. Durante el primer experimento, el proceso completo de formación, evolución y fusión del hielo marino fue monitorizado durante más de siete meses en una bahía ubicada en Groenlandia. Este tipo de hielo se caracteriza típicamente por su grosor, concentración y rugosidad. Diferentes observables de las reflexiones GNSS son analizados para tratar de estimar dichas propiedades. El espesor de hielo está relacionado con el nivel de francobordo o borda libre, que a su vez está relacionado con la altura de la superficie de hielo marino. Se ha logrado altimetría de fase precisa, mostrando correlación con un modelo de marea del Ártico. Además, los resultados a largo plazo de la altura elipsoidal siguen la evolución de las mediciones de temperatura de superficie de hielo proporcionadas por MODIS. La temperatura es un parámetro clave en el ritmo de crecimiento del hielo marino. Por otro lado, la presencia de sal en este tipo de hielo modifica sus propiedades dieléctricas, lo que implica variaciones en las amplitudes y fases de los coeficientes complejos de Fresnel con polarizaciones opuestas. Los resultados polarimétricos concuerdan con los valores de concentración de hielo obtenidos mediante inspección visual desde una estación meteorológica cercana. Por último, la forma de la señal reflejada y la dispersión de su fase son evaluadas como potenciales indicadores de la rugosidad de superficie. Para su comparación, se emplean mapas del hielo de la zona experimental. En particular, valores máximos de rugosidad estimada por los observables GNSS coinciden con hielo fijo, que se refiere al hielo anclado a la costa, donde los movimientos de las mareas contribuyen al desarrollo de patrones extraños, grietas y fisuras en su superficie. El segundo experimento se llevó a cabo en la Antártida, monitorizando una área de nieve pristina que es bien conocida para la calibración de instrumentos de teledetección. Debido a la relativa estabilidad de las capas de nieve, la adquisición de datos se limitó a diez días consecutivos. Se encontraron pulsaciones interferométricas a partir de un primer análisis de la amplitud de las señales recibidas, las cuales eran compatibles con un modelo de propagación multicamino donde el reflector se encuentra por debajo del nivel de la superficie. Como consecuencia de estos resultados, se ha desarrollado un modelo que reconstruye la señal recibida como la suma de un número finito de reflexiones, procedentes de diferentes capas de nieve (caracterizados por mediciones locales). La información interferométrica se recupera después del análisis espectral aplicado a las series temporales tanto de las señales reales, como de las modeladas (lag-hologramas).     Space-borne application of GNSS reflectometry for global sea state monitoring

    This research focuses on modelling the relationship between wind conditions, sea roughness and GNSS reflections received from Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The motivation for this study lies in the recent development of a GNSS reflections receiver platform for the UK-DMC satellite and the numerous advantages proposed GNSS Reflectometry can provide in Earth Observation and global disaster monitoring. The fIrst part of the thesis focuses on the simulation procedure of received GPS-R Delay-Doppler Map (DDM). Airborne GPS-R scatterometric model has been adapted into this space-borne application research. Aft~r deriving DDM simulations according to reflection scenario, the results of two-dimensional data-model fItting are presented and analysed. The sensitivity discussion of current GPS-R model suggests some limitations of the modelling method, especially under medium and high wind speed ranges. In the second part, we investigate the inversion scheme of DDMs for the purpose of extracting a statistical wave model empirically. The similar model structure of DDM simulation is used but the processing order is turned over. After deconvolution, DDMs are inversed back to spatial energy maps and spatial slope probability maps. Three inversion algorithms are developed and compared. Preliminary synthetic and real data experiments give evidence of the feasibility of the inversion methodology. Finally, in the third part of this research, a new geometric wave slope statistical model is discussed in the context of wave fIeld simulations. The sensitivity of obtained statistical model is discussed in terms of wind speed, wave direction and observing incident angle. This provides an alternative view point to look into the wave slope probability properties and compensate the traditional theoretic and empirical wave modelling methods.     BDS GNSS for Earth Observation

    For millennia, human communities have wondered about the possibility of observing phenomena in their surroundings, and in particular those affecting the Earth on which they live. More generally, it can be conceptually defined as Earth observation (EO) and is the collection of information about the biological, chemical and physical systems of planet Earth. It can be undertaken through sensors in direct contact with the ground or airborne platforms (such as weather balloons and stations) or remote-sensing technologies. However, the definition of EO has only become significant in the last 50 years, since it has been possible to send artificial satellites out of Earth’s orbit. Referring strictly to civil applications, satellites of this type were initially designed to provide satellite images; later, their purpose expanded to include the study of information on land characteristics, growing vegetation, crops, and environmental pollution. The data collected are used for several purposes, including the identification of natural resources and the production of accurate cartography. Satellite observations can cover the land, the atmosphere, and the oceans. Remote-sensing satellites may be equipped with passive instrumentation such as infrared or cameras for imaging the visible or active instrumentation such as radar. Generally, such satellites are non-geostationary satellites, i.e., they move at a certain speed along orbits inclined with respect to the Earth’s equatorial plane, often in polar orbit, at low or medium altitude, Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), thus covering the entire Earth’s surface in a certain scan time (properly called ’temporal resolution’), i.e., in a certain number of orbits around the Earth. The first remote-sensing satellites were the American NASA/USGS Landsat Program; subsequently, the European: ENVISAT (ENVironmental SATellite), ERS (European Remote-Sensing satellite), RapidEye, the French SPOT (Satellite Pour l’Observation de laTerre), and the Canadian RADARSAT satellites were launched. The IKONOS, QuickBird, and GeoEye-1 satellites were dedicated to cartography. The WorldView-1 and WorldView-2 satellites and the COSMO-SkyMed system are more recent. The latest generation are the low payloads called Small Satellites, e.g., the Chinese BuFeng-1 and Fengyun-3 series. Also, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSSs) have captured the attention of researchers worldwide for a multitude of Earth monitoring and exploration applications. On the other hand, over the past 40 years, GNSSs have become an essential part of many human activities. As is widely noted, there are currently four fully operational GNSSs; two of these were developed for military purposes (American NAVstar GPS and Russian GLONASS), whilst two others were developed for civil purposes such as the Chinese BeiDou satellite navigation system (BDS) and the European Galileo. In addition, many other regional GNSSs, such as the South Korean Regional Positioning System (KPS), the Japanese quasi-zenital satellite system (QZSS), and the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS/NavIC), will become available in the next few years, which will have enormous potential for scientific applications and geomatics professionals. In addition to their traditional role of providing global positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) information, GNSS navigation signals are now being used in new and innovative ways. Across the globe, new fields of scientific study are opening up to examine how signals can provide information about the characteristics of the atmosphere and even the surfaces from which they are reflected before being collected by a receiver. EO researchers monitor global environmental systems using in situ and remote monitoring tools. Their findings provide tools to support decision makers in various areas of interest, from security to the natural environment. GNSS signals are considered an important new source of information because they are a free, real-time, and globally available resource for the EO community

    Simulation-Based Feasibility Analysis of Ship Detection Using GNSS-R Delay-Doppler Maps

    In this article, we carry out a simulation analysis of ship detection via Global Navigation Satellite System-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) delay-Doppler map (DDM). The GNSS-R DDM simulator used here is a modified version of an algorithm conceived for the generation of GNSS-R DDMs of the sea surface. The new algorithm is based on an analytical model for the radar cross section of ships and is able to properly account for the presence of ship targets within the scene. The proposed GNSS-R DDM simulator is, then, exploited for assessing the viability of GNSS-R in ship detection applications at low incidence angles, where the adopted scattering models provide accurate results. The aim of the implemented simulation setup is to analyze what are the preferable conditions for ship detection using standard GNSS-R signal processing chain receiver and compare typical forward left-hand circularly polarized GNSS-R systems with nonstandard backward right-hand circularly polarized (RHCP) GNSS-R. The simulation study is two fold: First, detection performance is evaluated at spaceborne and airborne altitudes for both polarization channels under favorable detection conditions. Then, visibility of ship targets is assessed in terms of their location within the DDM. Simulation results show that ship detection is problematic when using satellite data, whereas interesting results are achieved at airborne altitudes, provided that the aircraft is approximately between the GNSS satellite and the target, and that appropriate RHCP polarization is probed. In such configurations, signal-to-noise-ratios larger than 10 dB are obtained with airborne receivers collecting the RHCP signal

    Robust Multi-sensor Data Fusion for Practical Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) Navigation

    The development of practical Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) are attracting increasing attention driven by their assorted military and commercial application potential. However, addressing the uncertainties presented in practical navigational sensor measurements of an USV in maritime environment remain the main challenge of the development. This research aims to develop a multi-sensor data fusion system to autonomously provide an USV reliable navigational information on its own positions and headings as well as to detect dynamic target ships in the surrounding environment in a holistic fashion. A multi-sensor data fusion algorithm based on Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) has been developed to generate more accurate estimations of USV’s navigational data considering practical environmental disturbances. A novel covariance matching adaptive estimation algorithm has been proposed to deal with the issues caused by unknown and varying sensor noise in practice to improve system robustness. Certain measures have been designed to determine the system reliability numerically, to recover USV trajectory during short term sensor signal loss, and to autonomously detect and discard permanently malfunctioned sensors, and thereby enabling potential sensor faults tolerance. The performance of the algorithms have been assessed by carrying out theoretical simulations as well as using experimental data collected from a real-world USV projected collaborated with Plymouth University. To increase the degree of autonomy of USVs in perceiving surrounding environments, target detection and prediction algorithms using an Automatic Identification System (AIS) in conjunction with a marine radar have been proposed to provide full detections of multiple dynamic targets in a wider coverage range, remedying the narrow detection range and sensor uncertainties of the AIS. The detection algorithms have been validated in simulations using practical environments with water current effects. The performance of developed multi-senor data fusion system in providing reliable navigational data and perceiving surrounding environment for USV navigation have been comprehensively demonstrated

    Engineering Calibration and Physical Principles of GNSS-Reflectometry for Earth Remote Sensing

    The Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) is a NASA mission that uses 32 Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites as active sources and 8 CYGNSS satellites as passive receivers to measure ocean surface roughness and wind speed, as well as soil moisture and flood inundation over land. This dissertation addresses two major aspects of engineering calibration: (1) characterization of the GPS effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP) for calibration of normalized bistatic radar cross section (NBRCS) observables; and (2) development of an end-to-end calibration approach using modeling and measurements of ocean surface mean square slope (MSS). To estimate the GPS transmit power, a ground-based GPS constellation power monitor (GCPM) system has been built to accurately and precisely measure the direct GPS signals. The transmit power of the L1 coarse/acquisition (C/A) code of the full GPS constellation is estimated using an optimal search algorithm. Updated values for transmit power have been successfully applied to CYGNSS L1B calibration and found to significantly reduce the PRN dependence of CYGNSS L1 and L2 data products. The gain pattern of each GPS satellite’s transmit antenna for the L1 C/A signal is determined from measurements of signal strength received by the 8-satellite CYGNSS constellation. Determination of GPS patterns requires knowledge of CYGNSS patterns and vice versa, so a procedure is developed to solve for both of them iteratively. The new GPS and CYGNSS patterns have been incorporated into the science data processing algorithm used by the CYGNSS mission and result in improved calibration performance. Variable transmit power by numerous Block IIF and IIR-M GPS space vehicles has been observed due to their flex power mode. Non-uniformity in the GPS antenna gain patterns further complicates EIRP estimation. A dynamic calibration approach is developed to further address GPS EIRP variability. It uses measurements by the direct received GPS signal to estimate GPS EIRP in the specular reflected direction and then incorporates them into the calibration of NBRCS. Dynamic EIRP calibration instantaneously detects and corrects for power fluctuations in the GPS transmitters and significantly reduces errors due to GPS antenna gain azimuthal asymmetry. It allows observations with the most variable Block IIF transmitters (approximately 37% of the GPS constellation) to be included in the standard data products and further improves the calibration quality of the NBRCS. A physics-based approach is then proposed to examine potential calibration errors and to further improve the Level 1 calibration. The mean square slope (mss) is a key physical parameter that relates the ocean surface properties (wave spectra) to the CYGNSS measurement of NBRCS. An approach to model the mss for validation with CYGNSS mss data is developed by adding the contribution of a high frequency tail to the WAVEWATCH III (WW3) mss. It is demonstrated that the ratio of CYGNSS mss to modified WW3 mss can be used to diagnose potential calibration errors that exist in the Level 1 calibration algorithm. This approach can help to improve CYGNSS data quality, including the Level 1 NBRCS and Level 2 ocean surface wind speed and roughness. The engineering calibration methods presented in this dissertation make significant contributions to the spatial coverage, calibration quality of the measured NBRCS and the geophysical data products produced by the NASA CYGNSS mission.     Radio frequency interference detection and mitigation techniques for navigation and Earth observation

    Radio-Frequency Interference (RFI) signals are undesired signals that degrade or disrupt the performance of a wireless receiver. RFI signals can be troublesome for any receiver, but they are especially threatening for applications that use very low power signals. This is the case of applications that rely on the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), or passive microwave remote sensing applications such as Microwave Radiometry (MWR) and GNSS-Reflectometry (GNSS-R). In order to solve the problem of RFI, RFI-countermeasures are under development. This PhD thesis is devoted to the design, implementation and test of innovative RFI-countermeasures in the fields of MWR and GNSS. In the part devoted to RFI-countermeasures for MWR applications, first, this PhD thesis completes the development of the MERITXELL instrument. The MERITXELL is a multi-frequency total-power radiometer conceived to be an outstanding platform to perform detection, characterization, and localization of RFI signals at the most common MWR imaging bands up to 92 GHz. Moreover, a novel RFI mitigation technique is proposed for MWR: the Multiresolution Fourier Transform (MFT). An assessment of the performance of the MFT has been carried out by comparison with other time-frequency mitigation techniques. According to the results, the MFT technique is a good trade-off solution among all other techniques since it can mitigate efficiently all kinds of RFI signals under evaluation. In the part devoted to RFI-countermeasures for GNSS and GNSS-R applications, first, a system for RFI detection and localization at GNSS bands is proposed. This system is able to detect RFI signals at the L1 band with a sensitivity of -108 dBm at full-band, and of -135 dBm for continuous wave and chirp-like signals when using the averaged spectrum technique. Besides, the Generalized Spectral Separation Coefficient (GSSC) is proposed as a figure of merit to evaluate the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) degradation in the Delay-Doppler Maps (DDMs) due to the external RFI effect. Furthermore, the FENIX system has been conceived as an innovative system for RFI detection and mitigation and anti-jamming for GNSS and GNSS-R applications. FENIX uses the MFT blanking as a pre-correlation excision tool to perform the mitigation. In addition, FENIX has been designed to be cross-GNSS compatible and RFI-independent. The principles of operation of the MFT blanking algorithm are assessed and compared with other techniques for GNSS signals. Its performance as a mitigation tool is proven using GNSS-R data samples from a real airborne campaign. After that, the main building blocks of the patented architecture of FENIX have been described. The FENIX architecture has been implemented in three real-time prototypes. Moreover, a simulator named FENIX-Sim allows for testing its performance under different jamming scenarios. The real-time performance of FENIX prototype has been tested using different setups. First, a customized VNA has been built in order to measure the transfer function of FENIX in the presence of several representative RFI/jamming signals. The results show how the power transfer function adapts itself to mitigate the RFI/jamming signal. Moreover, several real-time tests with GNSS receivers have been performed using GPS L1 C/A, GPS L2C, and Galileo E1OS. The results show that FENIX provides an extra resilience against RFI and jamming signals up to 30 dB. Furthermore, FENIX is tested using a real GNSS timing setup. Under nominal conditions, when no RFI/jamming signal is present, a small additional jitter on the order of 2-4 ns is introduced in the system. Besides, a maximum bias of 45 ns has been measured under strong jamming conditions (-30 dBm), which is acceptable for current timing systems requiring accuracy levels of 100 ns. Finally, the design of a backup system for GNSS in tracking applications that require high reliability against RFI and jamming attacks is proposed.Les interferències de radiofreqüència (RFI) són senyals no desitjades que degraden o interrompen el funcionament dels receptors sense fils. Les RFI poden suposar un problema per qualsevol receptor, però són especialment amenaçadores per les a aplicacions que fan servir senyals de molt baixa potència. Aquest és el cas de les aplicacions que depenen dels sistemes mundials de navegació per satèl·lit (GNSS) o de les aplicacions de teledetecció passiva de microones, com la radiometria de microones (MWR) i la reflectometria GNSS (GNSS-R). Per combatre aquest problema, sistemes anti-RFI s'estan desenvolupament actualment. Aquesta tesi doctoral està dedicada al disseny, la implementació i el test de sistemes anti-RFI innovadors en els camps de MWR i GNSS. A la part dedicada als sistemes anti-RFI en MWR, aquesta tesi doctoral completa el desenvolupament de l'instrument MERITXELL. El MERITXELL és un radiòmetre multifreqüència concebut com una plataforma excepcional per la detecció, caracterització i localització de RFI a les bandes de MWR més utilitzades per sota dels 92 GHz. A més a més, es proposa una nova tècnica de mitigació de RFI per MWR: la Transformada de Fourier amb Multiresolució (MFT). El funcionament de la MFT s'ha comparat amb el d'altres tècniques de mitigació en els dominis del temps i la freqüència. D'acord amb els resultats obtinguts, la MFT és una bona solució de compromís entre les altres tècniques, ja que pot mitigar de manera eficient tots els tipus de senyals RFI considerats. A la part dedicada als sistemes anti-RFI en GNSS i GNSS-R, primer es proposa un sistema per a la detecció i localització de RFI a les bandes GNSS. Aquest sistema és capaç de detectar senyals RFI a la banda L1 amb una sensibilitat de -108 dBm a tota la banda, i de -135 dBm per a senyals d'ona contínua i chirp fen un mitjana de l'espectre. A més a més, el Coeficient de Separació Espectral Generalitzada (GSSC) es proposa com una mesura per avaluar la degradació de la relació senyal a soroll (SNR) en els Mapes de Delay-Doppler (DDM) a causa del impacte de les RFI. La major contribució d'aquesta tesi doctoral és el sistema FENIX. FENIX és un sistema innovador de detecció i mitigació de RFI i inhibidors de freqüència per aplicacions GNSS i GNSS-R. FENIX utilitza la MFT per eliminar la interferència abans del procés de correlació amb el codi GNSS independentment del tipus de RFI. L'algoritme de mitigació de FENIX s'ha avaluat i comparat amb altres tècniques i els principals components de la seva arquitectura patentada es descriuen. Finalment, un simulador anomenat FENIX-Sim permet avaluar el seu rendiment en diferents escenaris d'interferència. El funcionament en temps real del prototip FENIX ha estat provat utilitzant diferents mètodes. En primer lloc, s'ha creat un analitzador de xarxes per a mesurar la funció de transferència del FENIX en presència de diverses RFI representatives. Els resultats mostren com la funció de transferència s'adapta per mitigar el senyal interferent. A més a més, s'han realitzat diferents proves en temps real amb receptors GNSS compatibles amb els senyals GPS L1 C/A, GPS L2C i Galileo E1OS. Els resultats mostren que FENIX proporciona una resistència addicional contra les RFI i els senyals dels inhibidors de freqüència de fins a 30 dB. A més a més, FENIX s'ha provat amb un sistema comercial de temporització basat en GNSS. En condicions nominals, sense RFI, FENIX introdueix un petit error addicional de tan sols 2-4 ns. Per contra, el biaix màxim mesurat en condicions d'alta interferència (-30 dBm) és de 45 ns, el qual és acceptable per als sistemes de temporització actuals que requereixen nivells de precisió d'uns 100 ns. Finalment, es proposa el disseny d'un sistema robust de seguiment, complementari als GNSS, per a aplicacions que requereixen alta fiabilitat contra RFI.Postprint (published version
