On the eigenfilter design method and its applications: a tutorial
The eigenfilter method for digital filter design involves the computation of filter coefficients as the eigenvector of an appropriate Hermitian matrix. Because of its low complexity as compared to other methods as well as its ability to incorporate various time and frequency-domain constraints easily, the eigenfilter method has been found to be very useful. In this paper, we present a review of the eigenfilter design method for a wide variety of filters, including linear-phase finite impulse response (FIR) filters, nonlinear-phase FIR filters, all-pass infinite impulse response (IIR) filters, arbitrary response IIR filters, and multidimensional filters. Also, we focus on applications of the eigenfilter method in multistage filter design, spectral/spacial beamforming, and in the design of channel-shortening equalizers for communications applications
Output Filter Aware Optimization of the Noise Shaping Properties of {\Delta}{\Sigma} Modulators via Semi-Definite Programming
The Noise Transfer Function (NTF) of {\Delta}{\Sigma} modulators is typically
designed after the features of the input signal. We suggest that in many
applications, and notably those involving D/D and D/A conversion or actuation,
the NTF should instead be shaped after the properties of the
output/reconstruction filter. To this aim, we propose a framework for optimal
design based on the Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov (KYP) lemma and semi-definite
programming. Some examples illustrate how in practical cases the proposed
strategy can outperform more standard approaches.Comment: 14 pages, 18 figures, journal. Code accompanying the paper is

Noise Weighting in the Design of {\Delta}{\Sigma} Modulators (with a Psychoacoustic Coder as an Example)
A design flow for {\Delta}{\Sigma} modulators is illustrated, allowing
quantization noise to be shaped according to an arbitrary weighting profile.
Being based on FIR NTFs, possibly with high order, the flow is best suited for
digital architectures. The work builds on a recent proposal where the modulator
is matched to the reconstruction filter, showing that this type of optimization
can benefit a wide range of applications where noise (including in-band noise)
is known to have a different impact at different frequencies. The design of a
multiband modulator, a modulator avoiding DC noise, and an audio modulator
capable of distributing quantization artifacts according to a psychoacoustic
model are discussed as examples. A software toolbox is provided as a general
design aid and to replicate the proposed results.Comment: 5 pages, 18 figures, journal. Code accompanying the paper is

Optimisation of multiplier-less FIR filter design techniques
This thesis is concerned with the design of multiplier-less (ML) finite impulse response (FIR) digital filters. The use of multiplier-less digital filters results in simplified filtering structures, better throughput rates and higher speed. These characteristics are very desirable in many DSP systems. This thesis concentrates on the design of digital filters with power-of-two coefficients that result in simplified filtering structures. Two distinct classesof ML FIR filter design algorithms are developed and compared
with traditional techniques. The first class is based on the sensitivity of filter coefficients to rounding to power-of-two. Novel elements include extending of the algorithm for multiple-bands filters and introducing mean square error as the sensitivity criterion. This improves the performance of the algorithm and reduces the complexity of resulting filtering structures. The second class of filter design algorithms is based on evolutionary techniques, primarily genetic algorithms. Three different algorithms based on genetic algorithm kernel are developed. They include simple genetic algorithm, knowledge-based genetic algorithm and hybrid of genetic algorithm and simulated annealing. Inclusion of the additional knowledge has been found very useful when re-designing filters or refining previous designs. Hybrid techniques are useful when exploring large, N-dimensional searching spaces. Here, the genetic algorithm is used to explore searching space rapidly, followed by fine search using simulated annealing. This approach has been found beneficial for design of high-order filters. Finally, a formula for estimation of the filter length from its specification and complementing both
classes of design algorithms, has been evolved using techniques of symbolic regression and genetic programming. Although the evolved formula is very complex and not easily understandable, statistical analysis has shown that it produces
more
accurate results than traditional Kaiser's formula.
In summary, several novel algorithms for the design of multiplier-less digital filters
have been developed. They outperform traditional techniques that are used for the
design of ML FIR filters and hence contributed to the knowledge in the field of ML

Adaptive interference suppression for DS-CDMA systems based on interpolated FIR filters with adaptive interpolators in multipath channels
In this work we propose an adaptive linear receiver structure based on interpolated finite impulse response (FIR) filters with adaptive interpolators for direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems in multipath channels. The interpolated minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) and the interpolated constrained minimum variance (CMV) solutions are described for a novel scheme where the interpolator is rendered time-varying in order to mitigate multiple access interference (MAI) and multiple-path propagation effects. Based upon the interpolated MMSE and CMV solutions we present computationally efficient stochastic gradient (SG) and exponentially weighted recursive least squares type (RLS) algorithms for both receiver and interpolator filters in the supervised and blind modes of operation. A convergence analysis of the algorithms and a discussion of the convergence properties of the method are carried out for both modes of operation. Simulation experiments for a downlink scenario show that the proposed structures achieve a superior BER convergence and steady-state performance to previously reported reduced-rank receivers at lower complexity
