    Optical techniques for 3D surface reconstruction in computer-assisted laparoscopic surgery

    One of the main challenges for computer-assisted surgery (CAS) is to determine the intra-opera- tive morphology and motion of soft-tissues. This information is prerequisite to the registration of multi-modal patient-specific data for enhancing the surgeon’s navigation capabilites by observ- ing beyond exposed tissue surfaces and for providing intelligent control of robotic-assisted in- struments. In minimally invasive surgery (MIS), optical techniques are an increasingly attractive approach for in vivo 3D reconstruction of the soft-tissue surface geometry. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art methods for optical intra-operative 3D reconstruction in laparoscopic surgery and discusses the technical challenges and future perspectives towards clinical translation. With the recent paradigm shift of surgical practice towards MIS and new developments in 3D opti- cal imaging, this is a timely discussion about technologies that could facilitate complex CAS procedures in dynamic and deformable anatomical regions

    Augmented reality fonts with enhanced out-of-focus text legibility

    In augmented reality, information is often distributed between real and virtual contexts, and often appears at different distances from the viewer. This raises the issues of (1) context switching, when attention is switched between real and virtual contexts, (2) focal distance switching, when the eye accommodates to see information in sharp focus at a new distance, and (3) transient focal blur, when information is seen out of focus, during the time interval of focal distance switching. This dissertation research has quantified the impact of context switching, focal distance switching, and transient focal blur on human performance and eye fatigue in both monocular and binocular viewing conditions. Further, this research has developed a novel font that when seen out-of-focus looks sharper than standard fonts. This SharpView font promises to mitigate the effect of transient focal blur. Developing this font has required (1) mathematically modeling out-of-focus blur with Zernike polynomials, which model focal deficiencies of human vision, (2) developing a focus correction algorithm based on total variation optimization, which corrects out-of-focus blur, and (3) developing a novel algorithm for measuring font sharpness. Finally, this research has validated these fonts through simulation and optical camera-based measurement. This validation has shown that, when seen out of focus, SharpView fonts are as much as 40 to 50% sharper than standard fonts. This promises to improve font legibility in many applications of augmented reality

    Beyond NeRF Underwater: Learning Neural Reflectance Fields for True Color Correction of Marine Imagery

    Underwater imagery often exhibits distorted coloration as a result of light-water interactions, which complicates the study of benthic environments in marine biology and geography. In this research, we propose an algorithm to restore the true color (albedo) in underwater imagery by jointly learning the effects of the medium and neural scene representations. Our approach models water effects as a combination of light attenuation with distance and backscattered light. The proposed neural scene representation is based on a neural reflectance field model, which learns albedos, normals, and volume densities of the underwater environment. We introduce a logistic regression model to separate water from the scene and apply distinct light physics during training. Our method avoids the need to estimate complex backscatter effects in water by employing several approximations, enhancing sampling efficiency and numerical stability during training. The proposed technique integrates underwater light effects into a volume rendering framework with end-to-end differentiability. Experimental results on both synthetic and real-world data demonstrate that our method effectively restores true color from underwater imagery, outperforming existing approaches in terms of color consistency.Comment: Robotics and Automation Letters (RA-L) VOL. 8, NO. 10, OCTOBER 202

    From Calibration to Large-Scale Structure from Motion with Light Fields

    Classic pinhole cameras project the multi-dimensional information of the light flowing through a scene onto a single 2D snapshot. This projection limits the information that can be reconstructed from the 2D acquisition. Plenoptic (or light field) cameras, on the other hand, capture a 4D slice of the plenoptic function, termed the “light field”. These cameras provide both spatial and angular information on the light flowing through a scene; multiple views are captured in a single photographic exposure facilitating various applications. This thesis is concerned with the modelling of light field (or plenoptic) cameras and the development of structure from motion pipelines using such cameras. Specifically, we develop a geometric model for a multi-focus plenoptic camera, followed by a complete pipeline for the calibration of the suggested model. Given a calibrated light field camera, we then remap the captured light field to a grid of pinhole images. We use these images to obtain metric 3D reconstruction through a novel framework for structure from motion with light fields. Finally, we suggest a linear and efficient approach for absolute pose estimation for light fields
