    Use of spectral kurtosis for improving signal to noise ratio of acoustic emission signal from defective bearings

    The use of Acoustic Emission (AE) to monitor the condition of roller bearings in rotating machinery is growing in popularity. This investigation is centred on the application of Spectral Kurtosis (SK) as a denoising tool able to enhance the bearing fault features from an AE signal. This methodology was applied to AE signals acquired from an experimental investigation where different size defects were seeded on a roller bearing. The results suggest that the signal to noise ratio can be significantly improved using SK

    Bearings damage detection in presence of heavy non-Gaussian noise via cyclo-stationary analysis

    A problem of rolling element bearings diagnostics is discussed in the paper. In the classical approach, time domain detectors (e.g. kurtosis) or frequency domain representation (envelope spectrum analysis) are used to identify a damage in bearings. However, in our case, the machine (copper ore crusher) produces randomly spaced in time heavy impulsive disturbances related to normal operation of the machine. It eliminates completely possibility of detection of damage in time domain or using analysis of the envelope spectrum of the raw vibration signal. It is well known that effectiveness of envelope analysis might be significantly improved if the signal is pre-processed before enveloping. Unfortunately, again, almost all known criteria based on maximization of impulsiveness of signal in time domain fail in this case. In the paper we propose to incorporate cyclostationarity instead of impulsiveness, namely we propose to perform the spectral coherence density analysis

    Diagnosis of Combination Faults in a Planetary Gearbox using a Modulation Signal Bispectrum based Sideband Estimator

    This paper presents a novel method for diagnosing combination faults in planetary gearboxes. Vibration signals measured on the gearbox housing exhibit complicated characteristics because of multiple modulations of concurrent excitation sources, signal paths and noise. To separate these modulations accurately, a modulation signal bispectrum based sideband estimator (MSB-SE) developed recently is used to achieve a sparse representation for the complicated signal contents, which allows effective enhancement of various sidebands for accurate diagnostic information. Applying the proposed method to diagnose an industrial planetary gearbox which coexists both bearing faults and gear faults shows that the different severities of the faults can be separated reliably under different load conditions, confirming the superior performance of this MSB-SE based diagnosis scheme

    Performance of Envelope Demodulation for Bearing Damage Detection on {CWRU} Accelerometric Data: Kurtogram and Traditional Indicators vs. Targeted a Posteriori Band Indicators

    Envelope demodulation of vibration signals is surely one of the most successful methods of analysis for highlighting diagnostic information of rolling element bearings incipient faults. From a mathematical perspective, the selection of a proper demodulation band can be regarded as an optimization problem involving a utility function to assess the demodulation performance in a particular band and a scheme to move within the search space of all the possible frequency bands {f, Df} (center frequency and band size) towards the optimal one. In most of cases, kurtosis-based indices are used to select the proper demodulation band. Nevertheless, to overcome the lack of robustness to non-Gaussian noise, different utility functions can be found in the literature. One of these is the kurtosis of the unbiased autocorrelation of the squared envelope of the filtered signal found in the autogram. These heuristics are usually sufficient to highlight the defect spectral lines in the demodulated signal spectrum (i.e., usually the squared envelope spectrum (SES)), enabling bearings diagnostics. Nevertheless, it is not always the case. In this work, then, posteriori band indicators based on SES defect spectral lines are proposed to assess the general envelope demodulation performance and the goodness of traditional indicators.     Identification of cyclic components in presence of non-Gaussian noise – application to crusher bearings damage detection

    In this paper an issue of local damage detection in a rolling element bearing is discussed. The bearing operates in a hummer crusher, thus the vibration signal acquired on the housing contains a lot of impacts that originate in various sources. In the case of local damage detection it is crucial to find a set of cyclic impulses in the signal. These impulses are informative, in spite of impulses related to the crushing process, which are non-informative. In order to find the damage signature we provide feasibility study on a tool based on cyclostationary approach, namely cyclic spectral coherence. This comprehensive analysis includes study on four different signals from bearings in various condition and operating with or without load applied. This analysis is preceded by motivating preliminary analysis where we examine a few widely-used methods for local damage detection

    A proposal of a technique for correlating defect dimensions to vibration amplitude in bearing monitoring

    The capability of early stage detection of a defect is gaining more and more importance because it can help the maintenance process, the cost reduction and the reliability of the systems. The increment of vibration amplitude is a well-known method for evaluating the damage of a component, but it is sometimes difficult to understand the exact level of damage. In other words, the amplitude of vibration cannot be directly connected to the dimension of the defect. In the present paper, based on a non-Hertzian contact algorithm, the spectrum of the pressure distribution in the contact surface between the race and the rolling element is evaluated. Such spectrum is then compared with the acquired spectrum of a vibration response of a defected bearing. The bearing vibration pattern was previously analyzed with monitoring techniques to extract all the damage information. The correlation between the spectrum of the pressure distribution in the defected contact surface and the analyzed spectrum of the damaged bearing highlights a strict relationship. By using that analysis, a precise correlation between defect aspect and dimension and vibration level can be addressed to estimate the level of damaging
