The goal of multimodal biometric recognition system is to make a decision by identifying their physiological behavioural traits. Nevertheless, the decision-making process by biometric recognition system can be extremely complex due to high dimension unimodal features in temporal domain. This paper explains a deep multimodal biometric system for human recognition using three traits, face, fingerprint and iris. With the objective of reducing the feature vector dimension in the temporal domain, first pre-processing is performed using Contourlet Transform Model. Next, Local Derivative Ternary Pattern model is applied to the pre-processed features where the feature discrimination power is improved by obtaining the coefficients that has maximum variation across pre-processed multimodality features, therefore improving recognition accuracy. Weighted Rank Level Fusion is applied to the extracted multimodal features, that efficiently combine the biometric matching scores from several modalities (i.e. face, fingerprint and iris). Finally, a deep learning framework is presented for improving the recognition rate of the multimodal biometric system in temporal domain. The results of the proposed multimodal biometric recognition framework were compared with other multimodal methods. Out of these comparisons, the multimodal face, fingerprint and iris fusion offers significant improvements in the recognition rate of the suggested multimodal biometric system

    Multispectral Palmprint Encoding and Recognition

Palmprints are emerging as a new entity in multi-modal biometrics for human identification and verification. Multispectral palmprint images captured in the visible and infrared spectrum not only contain the wrinkles and ridge structure of a palm, but also the underlying pattern of veins; making them a highly discriminating biometric identifier. In this paper, we propose a feature encoding scheme for robust and highly accurate representation and matching of multispectral palmprints. To facilitate compact storage of the feature, we design a binary hash table structure that allows for efficient matching in large databases. Comprehensive experiments for both identification and verification scenarios are performed on two public datasets -- one captured with a contact-based sensor (PolyU dataset), and the other with a contact-free sensor (CASIA dataset). Recognition results in various experimental setups show that the proposed method consistently outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods. Error rates achieved by our method (0.003% on PolyU and 0.2% on CASIA) are the lowest reported in literature on both dataset and clearly indicate the viability of palmprint as a reliable and promising biometric. AbstractHand-based biometrics plays a significant role in establishing security for real-time environments involving human interaction and is found to be more successful in terms of high speed and accuracy. This paper investigates on an integrated approach for personal authentication using Finger Back Knuckle Surface (FBKS) based on two methodologies viz., Angular Geometric Analysis based Feature Extraction Method (AGFEM) and Contourlet Transform based Feature Extraction Method (CTFEM). Based on these methods, this personal authentication system simultaneously extracts shape oriented feature information and textural pattern information of FBKS for authenticating an individual. Furthermore, the proposed geometric and textural analysis methods extract feature information from both proximal phalanx and distal phalanx knuckle regions (FBKS), while the existing works of the literature concentrate only on the features of proximal phalanx knuckle region. The finger joint region found nearer to the tip of the finger is called distal phalanx region of FBKS, which is a unique feature and has greater potentiality toward identification. Extensive experiments conducted using newly created database with 5400 FBKS images and the obtained results infer that the integration of shape oriented features with texture feature information yields excellent accuracy rate of 99.12% with lowest equal error rate of 1.04%

Poor Quality Fingerprint Recognition Based on Wave Atom Transform

Fingerprint is considered the most practical biometrics due to some specific features which make them widely accepted. Reliable feature extraction from poor quality fingerprint images is still the most challenging problem in fingerprint recognition system. Extracting features from poor fingerprint images is not an easy task. Recently, Multi-resolution transforms techniques have been widely used as a feature extractor in the field of biometric recognition. In this paper we develop a complete and an efficient fingerprint recognition system that can deal with poor quality fingerprint images. Identification of poor quality fingerprint images needs reliable preprocessing stage, in which an image alignment, segmentation, and enhancement processes are performed. We improve a popular enhancement technique by replacing the segmentation algorithm with another new one. We use Waveatom transforms in extracting distinctive features from the enhanced fingerprint images. The selected features are matched throw K-Nearest neighbor classifier techniques. We test our methodology in 114 subjects selected from a very challenges database; CASIA; and we achieve a high recognition rate of about 99.5%

Biometric system can be defined as the automated method of identifying or authenticating the identity of a living person based on physiological or behavioral traits. Palmprint biometric-based authentication has gained considerable attention in recent years. Globally, enterprises have been exploring biometric authorization for some time, for the purpose of security, payment processing, law enforcement CCTV systems, and even access to offices, buildings, and gyms via the entry doors. Palmprint biometric system can be divided into unimodal and multimodal. This paper will investigate the biometric system and provide a detailed overview of the palmprint technology with existing recognition approaches. Finally, we introduce a review of previous works based on a unimodal palmprint system using different databases

This dissertation is dedicated to the development of new algorithms for biometric applications based on multiresolution analysis tools. Biometric is a unique, measurable characteristic of a human being that can be used to automatically recognize an individual or verify an individual\u27s identity. Biometrics can measure physiological, behavioral, physical and chemical characteristics of an individual. Physiological characteristics are based on measurements derived from direct measurement of a part of human body, such as, face, fingerprint, iris, retina etc. We focussed our investigations to fingerprint and face recognition since these two biometric modalities are used in conjunction to obtain reliable identification by various border security and law enforcement agencies. We developed an efficient and robust human face recognition algorithm for potential law enforcement applications. A generic fingerprint compression algorithm based on state of the art multiresolution analysis tool to speed up data archiving and recognition was also proposed. Finally, we put forth a new fingerprint matching algorithm by generating an efficient set of fingerprint features to minimize false matches and improve identification accuracy. Face recognition algorithms were proposed based on curvelet transform using kernel based principal component analysis and bidirectional two-dimensional principal component analysis and numerous experiments were performed using popular human face databases. Significant improvements in recognition accuracy were achieved and the proposed methods drastically outperformed conventional face recognition systems that employed linear one-dimensional principal component analysis. Compression schemes based on wave atoms decomposition were proposed and major improvements in peak signal to noise ratio were obtained in comparison to Federal Bureau of Investigation\u27s wavelet scalar quantization scheme. Improved performance was more pronounced and distinct at higher compression ratios. Finally, a fingerprint matching algorithm based on wave atoms decomposition, bidirectional two dimensional principal component analysis and extreme learning machine was proposed and noteworthy improvements in accuracy were realized
