Improving News Popularity Estimation via Weak Supervision and Meta-active Learning

    Get PDF
Social news has fundamentally changed the mechanisms of public perception, education, and even dis-information. Apprising the popularity of social news articles can have significant impact through a diversity of information redistribution techniques. In this article, an improved prediction algorithm is proposed to predict the long-time popularity of social news articles without the need for ground-truth observations. The proposed framework applies a novel active learning selection policy to obtain the optimal volume of observations and achieve superior predictive performance. To assess the proposed framework, a large set of experiments are undertaken; these indicate that the new solution can improve prediction performance by 28% (precision) while reducing the volume of required ground truth by 32%

Wireless social networks: a survey of recent advances, applications and challenges

With the ubiquitous use of smartphones and other connected pieces of equipment, the number of devices connected to the Internet is exponentially growing. This will test the efficiency of the envisioned 5G network architectures for data acquisition and its storage. It is a common observation that the communication between smart devices is typically influenced by their social relationship. This suggests that the theory of social networks can be leveraged to improve the quality of service for such communication links. In fact, the social networking concepts of centrality and community have been investigated for an efficient realization of novel wireless network architectures. This work provides a comprehensive introduction to social networks and reviews the recent literature on the application of social networks in wireless communications. The potential challenges in communication network design are also highlighted, for a successful implementation of social networking strategies. Finally, some future directions are discussed for the application of social networking strategies to emerging wireless technologies such as non-orthogonal multiple access and visible light communications

A Survey of Anticipatory Mobile Networking: Context-Based Classification, Prediction Methodologies, and Optimization Techniques

A growing trend for information technology is to not just react to changes, but anticipate them as much as possible. This paradigm made modern solutions, such as recommendation systems, a ubiquitous presence in today's digital transactions. Anticipatory networking extends the idea to communication technologies by studying patterns and periodicity in human behavior and network dynamics to optimize network performance. This survey collects and analyzes recent papers leveraging context information to forecast the evolution of network conditions and, in turn, to improve network performance. In particular, we identify the main prediction and optimization tools adopted in this body of work and link them with objectives and constraints of the typical applications and scenarios. Finally, we consider open challenges and research directions to make anticipatory networking part of next generation networks

    Future Transportation

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with transportation activities account for approximately 20 percent of all carbon dioxide (co2) emissions globally, making the transportation sector a major contributor to the current global warming. This book focuses on the latest advances in technologies aiming at the sustainable future transportation of people and goods. A reduction in burning fossil fuel and technological transitions are the main approaches toward sustainable future transportation. Particular attention is given to automobile technological transitions, bike sharing systems, supply chain digitalization, and transport performance monitoring and optimization, among others
