Performance evaluation of networking protocols for connected vehicles
Modern cars feature many embedded systems that monitor and manage all the critical sensors and actuators. The interconnection of such systems is a challenging task since the information to be exchanged is of mission-critical nature and affects the driving experience. The vehicle connectivity can be further extended with Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) technology, which allows cars to exchange sensory information and even act on it. In this article a unified networking architecture is presented, starting from the inside of the vehicle and the interconnection of various control units and ultimately targeting Car-to-Car communications which enable smarter, safer and more efficient transportation. The researchers review and evaluate the performance of Power Line Communications as a solution for in-car networking. Then the safety-critical data as well as multimedia originating from each individual vehicle's in-car network are broadcasted to other neighbouring vehicles via IEEE 802.11p in a simulation environment featuring realistic vehicular mobility
QoS Categories Activeness-Aware Adaptive EDCA Algorithm for Dense IoT Networks
IEEE 802.11 networks have a great role to play in supporting and deploying of
the Internet of Things (IoT). The realization of IoT depends on the ability of
the network to handle a massive number of stations and transmissions, and to
support Quality of Service (QoS). IEEE 802.11 networks enable the QoS by
applying the Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) with static parameters
regardless of existing network capacity or which Access Category (AC) of QoS is
already active. Our objective in this paper is to improve the efficiency of the
uplink access in 802.11 networks; therefore we proposed an algorithm called QoS
Categories Activeness-Aware Adaptive EDCA Algorithm (QCAAAE) which adapts
Contention Window (CW) size, and Arbitration Inter-Frame Space Number (AIFSN)
values depending on the number of associated Stations (STAs) and considering
the presence of each AC. For different traffic scenarios, the simulation
results confirm the outperformance of the proposed algorithm in terms of
throughput (increased on average 23%) and retransmission attempts rate
(decreased on average 47%) considering acceptable delay for sensitive delay

Channel Access Management in Data Intensive Sensor Networks
There are considerable challenges for channel access in Data Intensive Sensor Networks - DISN, supporting Data Intensive Applications like Structural Health Monitoring. As the data load increases, considerable degradation of the key performance parameters of such sensor networks is observed. Successful packet delivery ratio drops due to frequent collisions and retransmissions. The data glut results in increased latency and energy consumption overall. With the considerable limitations on sensor node resources like battery power, this implies that excessive transmissions in response to sensor queries can lead to premature network death. After a certain load threshold the performance characteristics of traditional WSNs become unacceptable. Research work indicates that successful packet delivery ratio in 802.15.4 networks can drop from 95% to 55% as the offered network load increases from 1 packet/sec to 10 packets/sec. This result in conjunction with the fact that it is common for sensors in an SHM system to generate 6-8 packets/sec of vibration data makes it important to design appropriate channel access schemes for such data intensive applications.In this work, we address the problem of significant performance degradation in a special-purpose DISN. Our specific focus is on the medium access control layer since it gives a fine-grained control on managing channel access and reducing energy waste. The goal of this dissertation is to design and evaluate a suite of channel access schemes that ensure graceful performance degradation in special-purpose DISNs as the network traffic load increases.First, we present a case study that investigates two distinct MAC proposals based on random access and scheduling access. The results of the case study provide the motivation to develop hybrid access schemes. Next, we introduce novel hybrid channel access protocols for DISNs ranging from a simple randomized transmission scheme that is robust under channel and topology dynamics to one that utilizes limited topological information about neighboring sensors to minimize collisions and energy waste. The protocols combine randomized transmission with heuristic scheduling to alleviate network performance degradation due to excessive collisions and retransmissions. We then propose a grid-based access scheduling protocol for a mobile DISN that is scalable and decentralized. The grid-based protocol efficiently handles sensor mobility with acceptable data loss and limited overhead. Finally, we extend the randomized transmission protocol from the hybrid approaches to develop an adaptable probability-based data transmission method. This work combines probabilistic transmission with heuristics, i.e., Latin Squares and a grid network, to tune transmission probabilities of sensors, thus meeting specific performance objectives in DISNs. We perform analytical evaluations and run simulation-based examinations to test all of the proposed protocols

Position-based routing and MAC protocols for wireless ad-hoc networks
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.This thesis presents the Forecasting Routing Technique (FORTEL), a routing protocol for Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks (MANETs) based on the nodesâ Location Information. FORTEL stores the nodesâ location information in the Location Table (LT) in order to construct routes between the source and the destination nodes. FORTEL follows the source routing strategy, which has rarely been applied in position-based routing. According to the source routing strategy, the end-to-end route is attached to the packet, therefore, the processing cost, in regards to the intermediate nodes that simply relay the packet according to route, is minimized. FORTELâs key mechanisms include: first, the location update scheme, employed to keep the LT entries up-to-date with the network topology. Besides the mobility variation and the constant rate location update schemes applied, a window location update scheme is presented to increase the LTâs information accuracy. Second, the switching mechanism, between âHelloâ message and location update employed, to reduce the protocolâs routing overhead. Third and most important is the route computation mechanism, which is integrated with a topology forecasting technique to construct up-to-date routes between the communication peers, aiming to achieve high delivery rate and increase the protocol robustness against the nodesâ movement. FORTEL demonstrates higher performance as compared to other MANETâs routing protocols, and it delivers up to 20% more packets than AODV and up to 60 % more than DSR and OLSR, while maintaining low levels of routing overhead and network delay at the same time. The effectiveness of the window update scheme is also discussed, and it proves to increase FORTELâs delivery rate by up to 30% as compared to the other update schemes.
A common and frequently occurring phenomenon, in wireless networks, is the Hidden Terminal problem that significantly impacts the communication performance and the efficiency of the routing and MAC protocols. Beaconless routing approach in MANETs, which delivers data packets without prior knowledge of any sort `of information, suffers from packet duplication caused by the hidden nodes during the contention process. Moreover, the throughput of the IEEE MAC protocol decreases dramatically when the hidden terminal problem occurs. RTS/CTS mechanism fails to eliminate the problem and can further degrade the networkâs performance by introducing additional overhead. To tackle these challenges, this thesis presents two techniques, the Sender Suppression Algorithm and the Location-Aided MAC, where both rely on the nodesâ position to eliminate packet duplication in the beaconless routing and improve the performance of the 802.11 MAC respectively. Both schemes are based on the concept of grouping the nodes into zones and assign different time delay to each one. According to the Sender Suppression Algorithm, the senderâs forwarding area is divided into three zones, therefore, the local timer, set to define the time that the receiver has to wait before responding to the senderâs transmission, is added to the assigned zone delay. Following the first response, the sender interferes and suppresses the receivers with active timer of. On the other hand, the Location-Aided MAC, essentially a hybrid MAC, combines the concepts of time division and carrier sensing. The radio range of the wireless receiver is partitioned into four zones with different zone delays assigned to each zone. Channel access within the zone is purely controlled by CSMA/CA protocol, while it is time-based amongst zones. The effectiveness of the proposed techniques is demonstrated through simulation tests. Location-Aided MAC considerably improves the networkâs throughput compared to CSMA/CA and RTS/CTS. However, remarkable results come when the proposed technique and the RTS/CTS are combined, which achieves up to 20% more throughput as compared to the standalone RTS/CTS. Finally, the thesis presents a novel link lifetime estimation method for greedy forwarding to compute the link duration between two nodes. Based on a newly introduced Stability-Aware Greedy (SAG) scheme, the proposed method incorporates the destination node in the computation process and thus has a significant advantage over the conventional method, which only considers the information of the nodes composing the link
Cluster based jamming and countermeasures for wireless sensor network MAC protocols
A wireless sensor network (WSN) is a collection of wireless nodes, usually with limited computing resources and available energy. The medium access control layer (MAC layer) directly guides the radio hardware and manages access to the radio spectrum in controlled way. A top priority for a WSN MAC protocol is to conserve energy, however tailoring the algorithm for this purpose can create or expose a number of security vulnerabilities. In particular, a regular duty cycle makes a node vulnerable to periodic jamming attacks. This vulnerability limits the use of use of a WSN in applications requiring high levels of security. We present a new WSN MAC protocol, RSMAC (Random Sleep MAC) that is designed to provide resistance to periodic jamming attacks while maintaining elements that are essential to WSN functionality. CPU, memory and especially radio usage are kept to a minimum to conserve energy while maintaining an acceptable level of network performance so that applications can be run transparently on top of the secure MAC layer. We use a coordinated yet pseudo-random duty cycle that is loosely synchronized across the entire network via a distributed algorithm. This thwarts an attacker\u27s ability to predict when nodes will be awake and likewise thwarts energy efficient intelligent jamming attacks by reducing their effectiveness and energy-efficiency to that of non-intelligent attacks. Implementing the random duty cycle requires additional energy usage, but also offers an opportunity to reduce asymmetric energy use and eliminate energy use lost to explicit neighbor discovery. We perform testing of RSMAC against non-secure protocols in a novel simulator that we designed to make prototyping new WSN algorithms efficient, informative and consistent. First we perform tests of the existing SMAC protocol to demonstrate the relevance of the novel simulation for estimating energy usage, data transmission rates, MAC timing and other relevant macro characteristics of wireless sensor networks. Second, we use the simulation to perform detailed testing of RSMAC that demonstrates its performance characteristics with different configurations and its effectiveness in confounding intelligent jammers
