The pheromone trail metaphor is a simple and effective way to accumulate the experience of the past solutions in solving discrete optimization problems. Ant-based optimization algorithms have been successfully employed to solve hard optimization problems. The problem of achieving an optimal utilization of a hybrid genetic algorithm search time is actually a problem of finding its optimal set of control parameters. In this paper, a novel form of hybridization between an ant-based algorithm and a genetic-local hybrid algorithm is proposed. An ant colony optimization algorithm is used to monitor the behavior of a genetic-local hybrid algorithm and dynamically adjust its control parameters to optimize the exploitation-exploration balance according to the fitness landscape

In this paper, we propose a novel method for image segmentation that we call ACS-MRF method. ACS-MRF is a hybrid ant colony system coupled with a local search. We show how a colony of cooperating ants are able to estimate the labels field and minimize the MAP estimate. Cooperation between ants is performed by exchanging information through pheromone updating. The obtained results show the efficiency of the new algorithm, which is able to compete with other stochastic optimization methods like Simulated annealing and Genetic algorithm in terms of solution quality

A novel hybrid agent-based ant colony optimization–genetic algorithm approach is developed for the solution of mixed model parallel two-sided assembly line balancing and sequencing problem. The existing agent-based ant colony optimization algorithm is enhanced with the integration of a new genetic algorithm-based model sequencing mechanism. The algorithm provides ants the opportunity of selecting a random behavior among ten heuristics commonly used in the line balancing domain. A numerical example is given to illustrate the solution building procedure of the algorithm and the evolution of the chromosomes. The performance of the developed algorithm is also assessed through test problems and analysis of their solutions through a statistical test, namely paired sample t test. In accordance with the test results, it is statistically proven that the integrated genetic algorithm-based model sequencing engine helps agent-based ant colony optimization algorithm robustly find significantly better quality solutions
