    Learning Robust Radio Frequency Fingerprints Using Deep Convolutional Neural Networks

    Radio Frequency Fingerprinting (RFF) techniques, which attribute uniquely identifiable signal distortions to emitters via Machine Learning (ML) classifiers, are limited by fingerprint variability under different operational conditions. First, this work studied the effect of frequency channel for typical RFF techniques. Performance characterization using the multi-class Matthews Correlation Coefficient (MCC) revealed that using frequency channels other than those used to train the models leads to deterioration in MCC to under 0.05 (random guess), indicating that single-channel models are inadequate for realistic operation. Second, this work presented a novel way of studying fingerprint variability through Fingerprint Extraction through Distortion Reconstruction (FEDR), a neural network-based approach for quantifying signal distortions in a relative distortion latent space. Coupled with a Dense network, FEDR fingerprints were evaluated against common RFF techniques for up to 100 unseen classes, where FEDR achieved best performance with MCC ranging from 0.945 (5 classes) to 0.746 (100 classes), using 73% fewer training parameters than the next-best technique

    Artificial intelligence methods for security and cyber security systems

    This research is in threat analysis and countermeasures employing Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods within the civilian domain, where safety and mission-critical aspects are essential. AI has challenges of repeatable determinism and decision explanation. This research proposed methods for dense and convolutional networks that provided repeatable determinism. In dense networks, the proposed alternative method had an equal performance with more structured learnt weights. The proposed method also had earlier learning and higher accuracy in the Convolutional networks. When demonstrated in colour image classification, the accuracy improved in the first epoch to 67%, from 29% in the existing scheme. Examined in transferred learning with the Fast Sign Gradient Method (FSGM) as an analytical method to control distortion of dissimilarity, a finding was that the proposed method had more significant retention of the learnt model, with 31% accuracy instead of 9%. The research also proposed a threat analysis method with set-mappings and first principle analytical steps applied to a Symbolic AI method using an algebraic expert system with virtualized neurons. The neural expert system method demonstrated the infilling of parameters by calculating beamwidths with variations in the uncertainty of the antenna type. When combined with a proposed formula extraction method, it provides the potential for machine learning of new rules as a Neuro-Symbolic AI method. The proposed method uses extra weights allocated to neuron input value ranges as activation strengths. The method simplifies the learnt representation reducing model depth, thus with less significant dropout potential. Finally, an image classification method for emitter identification is proposed with a synthetic dataset generation method and shows the accurate identification between fourteen radar emission modes with high ambiguity between them (and achieved 99.8% accuracy). That method would be a mechanism to recognize non-threat civil radars aimed at threat alert when deviations from those civilian emitters are detected

    Non-iterative and Fast Deep Learning: Multilayer Extreme Learning Machines

    In the past decade, deep learning techniques have powered many aspects of our daily life, and drawn ever-increasing research interests. However, conventional deep learning approaches, such as deep belief network (DBN), restricted Boltzmann machine (RBM), and convolutional neural network (CNN), suffer from time-consuming training process due to fine-tuning of a large number of parameters and the complicated hierarchical structure. Furthermore, the above complication makes it difficult to theoretically analyze and prove the universal approximation of those conventional deep learning approaches. In order to tackle the issues, multilayer extreme learning machines (ML-ELM) were proposed, which accelerate the development of deep learning. Compared with conventional deep learning, ML-ELMs are non-iterative and fast due to the random feature mapping mechanism. In this paper, we perform a thorough review on the development of ML-ELMs, including stacked ELM autoencoder (ELM-AE), residual ELM, and local receptive field based ELM (ELM-LRF), as well as address their applications.     Smart Sensor Technologies for IoT

    The recent development in wireless networks and devices has led to novel services that will utilize wireless communication on a new level. Much effort and resources have been dedicated to establishing new communication networks that will support machine-to-machine communication and the Internet of Things (IoT). In these systems, various smart and sensory devices are deployed and connected, enabling large amounts of data to be streamed. Smart services represent new trends in mobile services, i.e., a completely new spectrum of context-aware, personalized, and intelligent services and applications. A variety of existing services utilize information about the position of the user or mobile device. The position of mobile devices is often achieved using the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) chips that are integrated into all modern mobile devices (smartphones). However, GNSS is not always a reliable source of position estimates due to multipath propagation and signal blockage. Moreover, integrating GNSS chips into all devices might have a negative impact on the battery life of future IoT applications. Therefore, alternative solutions to position estimation should be investigated and implemented in IoT applications. This Special Issue, “Smart Sensor Technologies for IoT” aims to report on some of the recent research efforts on this increasingly important topic.     A Tutorial on Environment-Aware Communications via Channel Knowledge Map for 6G

    Sixth-generation (6G) mobile communication networks are expected to have dense infrastructures, large-dimensional channels, cost-effective hardware, diversified positioning methods, and enhanced intelligence. Such trends bring both new challenges and opportunities for the practical design of 6G. On one hand, acquiring channel state information (CSI) in real time for all wireless links becomes quite challenging in 6G. On the other hand, there would be numerous data sources in 6G containing high-quality location-tagged channel data, making it possible to better learn the local wireless environment. By exploiting such new opportunities and for tackling the CSI acquisition challenge, there is a promising paradigm shift from the conventional environment-unaware communications to the new environment-aware communications based on the novel approach of channel knowledge map (CKM). This article aims to provide a comprehensive tutorial overview on environment-aware communications enabled by CKM to fully harness its benefits for 6G. First, the basic concept of CKM is presented, and a comparison of CKM with various existing channel inference techniques is discussed. Next, the main techniques for CKM construction are discussed, including both the model-free and model-assisted approaches. Furthermore, a general framework is presented for the utilization of CKM to achieve environment-aware communications, followed by some typical CKM-aided communication scenarios. Finally, important open problems in CKM research are highlighted and potential solutions are discussed to inspire future work

    Autonomous Vehicles: MMW Radar Backscattering Modeling of Traffic Environment, Vehicular Communication Modeling, and Antenna Designs

    77 GHz Millimeter-wave (mmWave) radar serves as an essential component among many sensors required for autonomous navigation. High-fidelity simulation is indispensable for nowadays’ development of advanced automotive radar systems because radar simulation can accelerate the design and testing process and help people to better understand and process the radar data. The main challenge in automotive radar simulation is to simulate the complex scattering behavior of various targets in real time, which is required for sensor fusion with other sensory simulation, e.g. optical image simulation. In this thesis, an asymptotic method based on a fast-wideband physical optics (PO) calculation is developed and applied to get high fidelity radar response of traffic scenes and generate the corresponding radar images from traffic targets. The targets include pedestrians, vehicles, and other stationary targets. To further accelerate the simulation into real time, a physics-based statistical approach is developed. The RCS of targets are fit into statistical distributions, and then the statistical parameters are summarized as functions of range and aspect angles, and other attributes of the targets. For advanced radar with multiple transmitters and receivers, pixelated-scatterer statistical RCS models are developed to represent objects as extend targets and relax the requirement for far-field condition. A real-time radar scene simulation software, which will be referred to as Michigan Automotive Radar Scene Simulator (MARSS), based on the statistical models are developed and integrated with a physical 3D scene generation software (Unreal Engine 4). One of the major challenges in radar signal processing is to detect the angle of arrival (AOA) of multiple targets. A new analytic multiple-sources AOA estimation algorithm that outperforms many well-known AOA estimation algorithms is developed and verified by experiments. Moreover, the statistical parameters of RCS from targets and radar images are used in target classification approaches based on machine learning methods. In realistic road traffic environment, foliage is commonly encountered that can potentially block the line-of-sight link. In the second part of the thesis, a non-line-of-sight (NLoS) vehicular propagation channel model for tree trunks at two vehicular communication bands (5.9 GHz and 60 GHz) is proposed. Both near-field and far-field scattering models from tree trunk are developed based on modal expansion and surface current integral method. To make the results fast accessible and retractable, a macro model based on artificial neural network (ANN) is proposed to fit the path loss calculated from the complex electromagnetic (EM) based methods. In the third part of the thesis, two broadband (bandwidth > 50%) omnidirectional antenna designs are discussed to enable polarization diversity for next-generation communication systems. The first design is a compact horizontally polarized (HP) antenna, which contains four folded dipole radiators and utilizing their mutual coupling to enhance the bandwidth. The second one is a circularly polarized (CP) antenna. It is composed of one ultra-wide-band (UWB) monopole, the compact HP antenna, and a dedicatedly designed asymmetric power divider based feeding network.
