    EXPLOITING N-GRAM IMPORTANCE AND ADDITIONAL KNOWEDGE BASED ON WIKIPEDIA FOR IMPROVEMENTS IN GAAC BASED DOCUMENT CLUSTERING

    This paper provides a solution to the issue: “How can we use Wikipedia based concepts in document\ud clustering with lesser human involvement, accompanied by effective improvements in result?” In the\ud devised system, we propose a method to exploit the importance of N-grams in a document and use\ud Wikipedia based additional knowledge for GAAC based document clustering. The importance of N-grams\ud in a document depends on several features including, but not limited to: frequency, position of their\ud occurrence in a sentence and the position of the sentence in which they occur, in the document. First, we\ud introduce a new similarity measure, which takes the weighted N-gram importance into account, in the\ud calculation of similarity measure while performing document clustering. As a result, the chances of topical similarity in clustering are improved. Second, we use Wikipedia as an additional knowledge base both, to remove noisy entries from the extracted N-grams and to reduce the information gap between N-grams that are conceptually-related, which do not have a match owing to differences in writing scheme or strategies. Our experimental results on the publicly available text dataset clearly show that our devised system has a significant improvement in performance over bag-of-words based state-of-the-art systems in this area

    A cloudy Vlasov solution

    We propose to integrate the Vlasov-Poisson equations giving the evolution of a dynamical system in phase-space using a continuous set of local basis functions. In practice, the method decomposes the density in phase-space into small smooth units having compact support. We call these small units ``clouds'' and choose them to be Gaussians of elliptical support. Fortunately, the evolution of these clouds in the local potential has an analytical solution, that can be used to evolve the whole system during a significant fraction of dynamical time. In the process, the clouds, initially round, change shape and get elongated. At some point, the system needs to be remapped on round clouds once again. This remapping can be performed optimally using a small number of Lucy iterations. The remapped solution can be evolved again with the cloud method, and the process can be iterated a large number of times without showing significant diffusion. Our numerical experiments show that it is possible to follow the 2 dimensional phase space distribution during a large number of dynamical times with excellent accuracy. The main limitation to this accuracy is the finite size of the clouds, which results in coarse graining the structures smaller than the clouds and induces small aliasing effects at these scales. However, it is shown in this paper that this method is consistent with an adaptive refinement algorithm which allows one to track the evolution of the finer structure in phase space. It is also shown that the generalization of the cloud method to the 4 dimensional and the 6 dimensional phase space is quite natural.Comment: 46 pages, 25 figures, submitted to MNRA

    REBA: A Refinement-Based Architecture for Knowledge Representation and Reasoning in Robotics

    This paper describes an architecture for robots that combines the complementary strengths of probabilistic graphical models and declarative programming to represent and reason with logic-based and probabilistic descriptions of uncertainty and domain knowledge. An action language is extended to support non-boolean fluents and non-deterministic causal laws. This action language is used to describe tightly-coupled transition diagrams at two levels of granularity, with a fine-resolution transition diagram defined as a refinement of a coarse-resolution transition diagram of the domain. The coarse-resolution system description, and a history that includes (prioritized) defaults, are translated into an Answer Set Prolog (ASP) program. For any given goal, inference in the ASP program provides a plan of abstract actions. To implement each such abstract action, the robot automatically zooms to the part of the fine-resolution transition diagram relevant to this action. A probabilistic representation of the uncertainty in sensing and actuation is then included in this zoomed fine-resolution system description, and used to construct a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP). The policy obtained by solving the POMDP is invoked repeatedly to implement the abstract action as a sequence of concrete actions, with the corresponding observations being recorded in the coarse-resolution history and used for subsequent reasoning. The architecture is evaluated in simulation and on a mobile robot moving objects in an indoor domain, to show that it supports reasoning with violation of defaults, noisy observations and unreliable actions, in complex domains.Comment: 72 pages, 14 figure

    Microstructure and mechanical properties of large size as-cast Ti-43Al-9V-0.2Y (at.%) alloy ingot from brim to centre

    A Ti-43Al-9V-0.2Y (at.%) alloy ingot with the size of Ф160×400mm was prepared by vacuum arc remelting (VAR). The microstructure of the as-cast Ti-43Al-9V-0.2Y alloy was composed of B2/α₂/γ lamellar colonies and massive B2 and γ phases which were distributed along the boundaries of these lamellar colonies in the form of equiaxed grains. Based on the grain size variation along the radius direction of the ingot, the ingot could be divided into four ring regions from brim to centre. It has been understood that the grain size variation between these four regions was due to the interplay of the effects of the cooling rate and the yttrium content on solidified microstructures in these regions. Mechanical testing of the samples cut from these four regions showed that there existed a clear correlation between the yield strength and the average grain sizes of the four ring regions, which approximately conformed to a Hall-Petch relationship

    A Data-Driven Approach for Tag Refinement and Localization in Web Videos

    Tagging of visual content is becoming more and more widespread as web-based services and social networks have popularized tagging functionalities among their users. These user-generated tags are used to ease browsing and exploration of media collections, e.g. using tag clouds, or to retrieve multimedia content. However, not all media are equally tagged by users. Using the current systems is easy to tag a single photo, and even tagging a part of a photo, like a face, has become common in sites like Flickr and Facebook. On the other hand, tagging a video sequence is more complicated and time consuming, so that users just tag the overall content of a video. In this paper we present a method for automatic video annotation that increases the number of tags originally provided by users, and localizes them temporally, associating tags to keyframes. Our approach exploits collective knowledge embedded in user-generated tags and web sources, and visual similarity of keyframes and images uploaded to social sites like YouTube and Flickr, as well as web sources like Google and Bing. Given a keyframe, our method is able to select on the fly from these visual sources the training exemplars that should be the most relevant for this test sample, and proceeds to transfer labels across similar images. Compared to existing video tagging approaches that require training classifiers for each tag, our system has few parameters, is easy to implement and can deal with an open vocabulary scenario. We demonstrate the approach on tag refinement and localization on DUT-WEBV, a large dataset of web videos, and show state-of-the-art results.Comment: Preprint submitted to Computer Vision and Image Understanding (CVIU

    Study of the costs and benefits of composite materials in advanced turbofan engines

    Composite component designs were developed for a number of applicable engine parts and functions. The cost and weight of each detail component was determined and its effect on the total engine cost to the aircraft manufacturer was ascertained. The economic benefits of engine or nacelle composite or eutectic turbine alloy substitutions was then calculated. Two time periods of engine certification were considered for this investigation, namely 1979 and 1985. Two methods of applying composites to these engines were employed. The first method just considered replacing an existing metal part with a composite part with no other change to the engine. The other method involved major engine redesign so that more efficient composite designs could be employed. Utilization of polymeric composites wherever payoffs were available indicated that a total improvement in Direct Operating Cost (DOC) of 2.82 to 4.64 percent, depending on the engine considered, could be attained. In addition, the percent fuel saving ranged from 1.91 to 3.53 percent. The advantages of using advanced materials in the turbine are more difficult to quantify but could go as high as an improvement in DOC of 2.33 percent and a fuel savings of 2.62 percent. Typically, based on a fleet of one hundred aircraft, a percent savings in DOC represents a savings of four million dollars per year and a percent of fuel savings equals 23,000 cu m (7,000,000 gallons) per year

    The Composition of Arylstibonic Acids

    This thesis describes a detailed ESI-MS investigation into the arylstibonic acids, organo-antimony-containing compounds that are currently of interest as anticancer reagents. Four arylstibonic acids, of nominal formula RC6H4SbO3H2 [R = p-chloro-, p-tolyl-, p-nitro- and α-naphthyl-] were synthesised, and a further eight archival samples from the National Cancer Institute Repository were obtained for use in the project. Results indicate clearly that the acids exist as polyoxometalate aggregates [H8(RSb)12O28], rather than monomeric species, in both the solid state and in acetonitrile solution, thus resolving a century-old debate concerning the nature of their molecular composition. Variations in solvent, time in solution and pH have also defined the stability of these aggregates under different conditions. Synthesis of arylstibonic acids by traditional methods (pre-1940) has been shown to lead to products contaminated with cations present during their preparation. An improved method of synthesis has been devised, and the crystal structure of an intermediate in the synthesis of these acids, [C6NH6][p-O2NC6H4SbCl5], is reported. Salts of arylstibonic acids with a range of cations were investigated by ESI-MS and shown to form a diverse family of polyoxostibonates with nuclearities including Sb12, Sb14 and Sb16. Crystal structures containing some of these aggregates, verified through parallel studies with collaborators, are described. Preliminary study of mixed polyoxometalates (Sb/As) showed a strong tendency to form As4Sb2 species but these could not be fully characterised

    Crystal Structure of the Sodium Cobaltate Deuterate Superconductor NaxCoO2o4xD2O (x=1/3)

    Neutron and x-ray powder diffraction have been used to investigate the crystal structures of a sample of the newly-discovered superconducting sodium cobaltate deuterate compound with composition Na0.31(3)CoO2o1.25(2)D2O and its anhydrous parent compound Na0.61(1)CoO2. The deuterate superconducting compound is formed by coordinating four D2O molecules (two above and two below) to each Na ion in a way that gives Na-O distances nearly equal to those in the parent compound. One deuteron of the D2O molecule is hydrogen bonded to an oxygen atom in the CoO2 plane and the oxygen atom and the second deuteron of each D2O molecule lie approximately in a plane between the Na layer and the CoO2 layers. This coordination of Na by four D2O molecules leads to ordering of the Na ions and D2O molecules. The sample studied here, which has Tc=4.5 K, has a refined composition of Na0.31(3)CoO2o1.25(2)D2O, in agreement with the expected 1:4 ratio of Na to D2O. These results show that the optimal superconducting composition should be viewed as a specific hydrated compound, not a solid solution of Na and D2O (H2O) in NaxCoO2oyD2O. Studies of physical properties vs. Na or D2O composition should be viewed with caution until it is verified that the compound remains in the same phase over the composition range of the study.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figure
