    Uniform Bahadur Representation for Nonparametric Censored Quantile Regression: A Redistribution-of-Mass Approach

    Censored quantile regressions have received a great deal of attention in the literature. In a linear setup, recent research has found that an estimator based on the idea of “redistribution-of-mass” in Efron (1967, Proceedings of the Fifth Berkeley Symposium on Mathematical Statistics and Probability, vol. 4, pp. 831–853, University of California Press) has better numerical performance than other available methods. In this paper, this idea is combined with the local polynomial kernel smoothing for nonparametric quantile regression of censored data. We derive the uniform Bahadur representation for the estimator and, more importantly, give theoretical justification for its improved efficiency over existing estimation methods. We include an example to illustrate the usefulness of such a uniform representation in the context of sufficient dimension reduction in regression analysis. Finally, simulations are used to investigate the finite sample performance of the new estimator

    Using Quantile Regression for Duration Analysis

    Quantile regression methods are emerging as a popular technique in econometrics and biometrics for exploring the distribution of duration data. This paper discusses quantile regression for duration analysis allowing for a flexible specification of the functional relationship and of the error distribution. Censored quantile regression address the issue of right censoring of the response variable which is common in duration analysis. We compare quantile regression to standard duration models. Quantile regression do not impose a proportional effect of the covariates on the hazard over the duration time. However, the method can not take account of time{varying covariates and it has not been extended so far to allow for unobserved heterogeneity and competing risks. We also discuss how hazard rates can be estimated using quantile regression methods. A small application with German register data on unemployment duration for younger workers demonstrates the applicability and the usefulness of quantile regression for empirical duration analysis. --censored quantile regression,unemployment duration,unobserved heterogeneity,hazard rate

    Application of a simple nonparametric conditional quantile function estimator in unemployment duration analysis

    The paper analyses the potential impact of stock market developments on lending behaviour from different perspectives. First we scrutinize the impact of stock market movements on the banks? and on the borrowers? balance sheets. Subsequently we estimate aggregate credit supply and demand functions including a stock market indicator as explanatory variable. The analysis reveals no major importance of the bank balance sheet channel for the relationship between stock market volatility and corporate financing possibilities of non-financial companies. A possible impact of stock market movements on banksÂŽ lending behaviour might be rooted in their impact on the balance sheets of corporate borrowers. The empirical results of the credit market analysis yield some confirming evidence for an impact of stock market developments. However, the results are not very stable and depend on the specification of the model and on the time period under observation. --
