ワイヤレス通信のための先進的な信号処理技術を用いた非線形補償法の研究
The inherit nonlinearity in analogue front-ends of transmitters and receivers have had primary impact on the overall performance of the wireless communication systems, as it gives arise of substantial distortion when transmitting and processing signals with such circuits. Therefore, the nonlinear compensation (linearization) techniques become essential to suppress the distortion to an acceptable extent in order to ensure sufficient low bit error rate. Furthermore, the increasing demands on higher data rate and ubiquitous interoperability between various multi-coverage protocols are two of the most important features of the contemporary communication system. The former demand pushes the communication system to use wider bandwidth and the latter one brings up severe coexistence problems. Having fully considered the problems raised above, the work in this Ph.D. thesis carries out extensive researches on the nonlinear compensations utilizing advanced digital signal processing techniques. The motivation behind this is to push more processing tasks to the digital domain, as it can potentially cut down the bill of materials (BOM) costs paid for the off-chip devices and reduce practical implementation difficulties. The work here is carried out using three approaches: numerical analysis & computer simulations; experimental tests using commercial instruments; actual implementation with FPGA. The primary contributions for this thesis are summarized as the following three points: 1) An adaptive digital predistortion (DPD) with fast convergence rate and low complexity for multi-carrier GSM system is presented. Albeit a legacy system, the GSM, however, has a very strict requirement on the out-of-band emission, thus it represents a much more difficult hurdle for DPD application. It is successfully implemented in an FPGA without using any other auxiliary processor. A simplified multiplier-free NLMS algorithm, especially suitable for FPGA implementation, for fast adapting the LUT is proposed. Many design methodologies and practical implementation issues are discussed in details. Experimental results have shown that the DPD performed robustly when it is involved in the multichannel transmitter. 2) The next generation system (5G) will unquestionably use wider bandwidth to support higher throughput, which poses stringent needs for using high-speed data converters. Herein the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) tends to be the most expensive single device in the whole transmitter/receiver systems. Therefore, conventional DPD utilizing high-speed ADC becomes unaffordable, especially for small base stations (micro, pico and femto). A digital predistortion technique utilizing spectral extrapolation is proposed in this thesis, wherein with band-limited feedback signal, the requirement on ADC speed can be significantly released. Experimental results have validated the feasibility of the proposed technique for coping with band-limited feedback signal. It has been shown that adequate linearization performance can be achieved even if the acquisition bandwidth is less than the original signal bandwidth. The experimental results obtained by using LTE-Advanced signal of 320 MHz bandwidth are quite satisfactory, and to the authors’ knowledge, this is the first high-performance wideband DPD ever been reported. 3) To address the predicament that mobile operators do not have enough contiguous usable bandwidth, carrier aggregation (CA) technique is developed and imported into 4G LTE-Advanced. This pushes the utilization of concurrent dual-band transmitter/receiver, which reduces the hardware expense by using a single front-end. Compensation techniques for the respective concurrent dual-band transmitter and receiver front-ends are proposed to combat the inter-band modulation distortion, and simultaneously reduce the distortion for the both lower-side band and upper-side band signals.電気通信大学201
High Linearity Millimeter Wave Power Amplifiers with Novel Linearizer Techniques
Millimeter-wave communications have experienced phenomenal growth in recent
years when limited frequency spectrum is occupied by the ever-developing communication
services. The power amplifier, as the key component in the transmitter/receiver module
of communication systems, affects performance of the whole system directly and receives
much attention.
For minimized distortion and optimum system performance, the non-constant en-
velope modulation schemes used in communication systems have challenging requirements
on linearity. As linearity is related to communication quality directly, several linearization
techniques, such as predistortion and feedforward, are applied to power amplifier design.
Predistortion method has the advantages over other techniques in relatively simple struc-
ture and reasonable linearity improvement. But current predistortion circuits have quite
limited performance improvement and relatively large insertion loss, which indicate the
need for further research. In most of millimeter-wave amplifier design, great effort has
been spent on output power or gain, while linearity is often ignored. As almost all the
predistortion circuits operate at the RF frequencies, the linearized millimeter-wave com-
munication circuit is still relatively immature and very challenging.
This project is dedicated to solve the linearity problem faced by millimeter-wave
power amplifier in communication systems, which lacks of e®ective techniques in this field.
Linearity improvement with the predistortion method will be the key issue in this project
and some original ideas for predistortion circuit design will be applied to millimeter-wave
amplifiers.
In this thesis, several predistortion circuits with novel structure were proposed,
which provide a new approach for linearity improvement for millimeter-wave power am-
plifier. A millimeter-wave power ampli¯er for LMDS applications built on GaAs pHEMT
technology was developed to a high engineering standard, which works as the test bench
for linearization. Actual operation and parasitic elements at tens of gigahertz have been
taken into consideration during the design.
Firstly, two novel predistorter structures based on the amplifier were proposed, one
is based on an amplifier with a fixed bias circuit and the other is based on an amplifier with
a nonlinear signal dependant bias circuit. These novel structures can improve the linearity
while improving other metrics simultaneously, which can effectively solve the problem of
insertion loss faced by the conventional structures. Besides this, an original predistortion
circuit design methodology derived from frequency to signal amplitude transformation was
proposed. Based on this methodology, several transfer functions were proposed and related
predistortion circuits were built to linearize the power amplifier. As this methodology is
quite different from the traditional approach, it can improve the linearity signifficantly
while other metrics are affected slightly and has a broad prospect for application

Digital Pre-distortion for Interference Reduction in Dynamic Spectrum Access Networks
Given the ever increasing reliance of today’s society on ubiquitous wireless access, the paradigm of dynamic spectrum access (DSA) as been proposed and implemented for utilizing the limited wireless spectrum more efficiently. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is growing in popularity for adoption into wireless services employing DSA frame- work, due to its high bandwidth efficiency and resiliency to multipath fading. While these advantages have been proven for many wireless applications, including LTE-Advanced and numerous IEEE wireless standards, one potential drawback of OFDM or its non-contiguous variant, NC-OFDM, is that it exhibits high peak-to-average power ratios (PAPR), which can induce in-band and out-of-band (OOB) distortions when the peaks of the waveform enter the compression region of the transmitter power amplifier (PA). Such OOB emissions can interfere with existing neighboring transmissions, and thereby severely deteriorate the reliability of the DSA network. A performance-enhancing digital pre-distortion (DPD) technique compensating for PA and in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) modulator distortions is proposed in this dissertation. Al- though substantial research efforts into designing DPD schemes have already been presented in the open literature, there still exists numerous opportunities to further improve upon the performance of OOB suppression for NC-OFDM transmission in the presence of RF front-end impairments. A set of orthogonal polynomial basis functions is proposed in this dissertation together with a simplified joint DPD structure. A performance analysis is presented to show that the OOB emissions is reduced to approximately 50 dBc with proposed algorithms employed during NC-OFDM transmission. Furthermore, a novel and intuitive DPD solution that can minimize the power regrowth at any pre-specified frequency in the spurious domain is proposed in this dissertation. Conventional DPD methods have been proven to be able to effectively reduce the OOB emissions that fall on top of adjacent channels. However more spectral emissions in more distant frequency ranges are generated by employing such DPD solutions, which are potentially in violation of the spurious emission limit. At the same time, the emissions in adjacent channel must be kept under the OOB limit. To the best of the author’s knowledge, there has not been extensive research conducted on this topic. Mathematical derivation procedures of the proposed algorithm are provided for both memoryless nonlinear model and memory-based nonlinear model. Simulation results show that the proposed method is able to provide a good balance of OOB emissions and emissions in the far out spurious domain, by reducing the spurious emissions by 4-5 dB while maintaining the adjacent channel leakage ratio (ACLR) improvement by at least 10 dB, comparing to the PA output spectrum without any DPD
Digital Signal Processing Techniques Applied to Radio over Fiber Systems
The dissertation aims to analyze different Radio over Fiber systems for the front-haul applications. Particularly, analog radio over fiber (A-RoF) are simplest and suffer from nonlinearities, therefore, mitigating such nonlinearities through digital predistortion are studied. In particular for the long haul A-RoF links, direct digital predistortion technique (DPDT) is proposed which can be applied to reduce the impairments of A-RoF systems due to the combined effects of frequency chirp of the laser source and chromatic dispersion of the optical channel. Then, indirect learning architecture (ILA) based structures namely memory polynomial (MP), generalized memory polynomial (GMP) and decomposed vector rotation (DVR) models are employed to perform adaptive digital predistortion with low complexities. Distributed feedback (DFB) laser and vertical capacity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) in combination with single mode/multi-mode fibers have been linearized with different quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) formats for single and multichannel cases. Finally, a feedback adaptive DPD compensation is proposed. Then, there is still a possibility to exploit the other realizations of RoF namely digital radio over fiber (D-RoF) system where signal is digitized and transmits the digitized bit streams via digital optical communication links. The proposed solution is robust and immune to nonlinearities up-to 70 km of link length. Lastly, in light of disadvantages coming from A-RoF and D-RoF, it is still possible to take only the advantages from both methods and implement a more recent form knows as Sigma Delta Radio over Fiber (S-DRoF) system. Second Order Sigma Delta Modulator and Multi-stAge-noise-SHaping (MASH) based Sigma Delta Modulator are proposed. The workbench has been evaluated for 20 MHz LTE signal with 256 QAM modulation. Finally, The 6x2 GSa/s sigma delta modulators are realized on FPGA to show a real time demonstration of S-DRoF system. The demonstration shows that S-DRoF is a competitive competitor for 5G sub-6GHz band applications
A fast engineering approach to high efficiency power amplifier linearization for avionics applications
This PhD thesis provides a fast engineering approach to the design of digital predistortion (DPD) linearizers from several perspectives: i) enhancing the off-line training performance of open-loop DPD, ii) providing robustness and reducing the computational complexity of the parameters identification subsystem and, iii) importing machine learning techniques to favor the automatic tuning of power amplifiers (PAs) and DPD linearizers with several free-parameters to maximize power efficiency while meeting the linearity specifications. One of the essential parts of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) is the avionics, being the radio control one of the earliest avionics present in the UAV. Unlike the control signal, for transferring user data (such as images, video, etc.) real-time from the drone to the ground station, large transmission rates are required. The PA is a key element in the transmitter chain to guarantee the data transmission (video, photo, etc.) over a long range from the ground station. The more linear output power, the better the coverage or alternatively, with the same coverage, better SNR allows the use of high-order modulation schemes and thus higher transmission rates are achieved. In the context of UAV wireless communications, the power consumption, size and weight of the payload is of significant importance. Therefore, the PA design has to take into account the compromise among bandwidth, output power, linearity and power efficiency (very critical in battery-supplied devices). The PA can be designed to maximize its power efficiency or its linearity, but not both. Therefore, a way to deal with this inherent trade-off is to design high efficient amplification topologies and let the PA linearizers take care of the linearity requirements. Among the linearizers, DPD linearization is the preferred solution to both academia and industry, for its high flexibility and linearization performance. In order to save as many computational and power resources as possible, the implementation of an open-loop DPD results a very attractive solution for UAV applications. This thesis contributes to the PA linearization, especially on off-line training for open-loop DPD, by presenting two different methods for reducing the design and operating costs of an open-loop DPD, based on the analysis of the DPD function. The first method focuses on the input domain analysis, proposing mesh-selecting (MeS) methods to accurately select the proper samples for a computationally efficient DPD parameter estimation. Focusing in the MeS method with better performance, the memory I-Q MeS method is combined with feature extraction dimensionality reduction technique to allow a computational complexity reduction in the identification subsystem by a factor of 65, in comparison to using the classical QR-LS solver and consecutive samples selection. In addition, the memory I-Q MeS method has been proved to be of crucial interest when training artificial neural networks (ANN) for DPD purposes, by significantly reducing the ANN training time. The second method involves the use of machine learning techniques in the DPD design procedure to enlarge the capacity of the DPD algorithm when considering a high number of free parameters to tune. On the one hand, the adaLIPO global optimization algorithm is used to find the best parameter configuration of a generalized memory polynomial behavioral model for DPD. On the other hand, a methodology to conduct a global optimization search is proposed to find the optimum values of a set of key circuit and system level parameters, that properly combined with DPD linearization and crest factor reduction techniques, can exploit at best dual-input PAs in terms of maximizing power efficiency along wide bandwidths while being compliant with the linearity specifications. The advantages of these proposed techniques have been validated through experimental tests and the obtained results are analyzed and discussed along this thesis.

Design and Linearization of Energy Efficiency Power Amplifier in Nonlinear OFDM Transmitter for LTE-5G Applications. Simulation and measurements of energy efficiency power amplifier in the presence of nonlinear OFDM transmitter system and digital predistortion based on Hammerstein-Wiener method
This research work has made an effort to understand a novel line of radio frequency
power amplifiers (RFPAs) that address initiatives for efficiency enhancement and
linearity compensation to harmonize the fifth generation (5G) campaign. The objective
is to enhance the performance of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing-long
term evolution (OFDM-LTE) transmitter by reducing the nonlinear distortion of the
RFPA.
The first part of this work explores the design and implementation of 15.5 W class AB
RF power amplifier, adopting a balanced technique to stimulate efficiency enhancement
and redeeming exhibition of excessive power in the transmitter. Consequently, this work
goes beyond improving efficiency over a linear RF power amplifier design; in which a
comprehensive investigation on the fundamental and harmonic components of class F
RF power amplifier using a load-pull approach to realise an optimum load impedance
and the matching network is presented. The frequency bandwidth for both amplifiers was
allocated to operate in the 2.620-2.690 GHz of mobile LTE applications.
The second part explores the development of the behavioural model for the class AB
power amplifier. A particular novel, Hammerstein-Wiener based model is proposed to
describe the dynamic nonlinear behaviour of the power amplifier. The RF power amplifier
nonlinear distortion is approximated using a new linear parameter approximation
approach. The first and second-order Hammerstein-Wiener using the Normalised Least
Mean Square Error (NLMSE) algorithm is used with the aim of easing the complexity of
filtering process during linear memory cancellation. Moreover, an enhanced adaptive
Wiener model is proposed to explore the nonlinear memory effect in the system. The
proposed approach is able to balance between convergence speed and high-level
accuracy when compared with behavioural modelling algorithms that are more complex
in computation.
Finally, the adaptive predistorter technique is implemented and verified in the OFDM
transceiver test-bed. The results were compared against the computed one from
MATLAB simulation for OFDM and 5G modulation transmitters. The results have
confirmed the reliability of the model and the effectiveness of the proposed predistorter.Fundacão para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, Portugal, under

Linearizing Radio Frequency Power Amplifiers Using an Analog Predistortion Technique
As critical elements of the physical infrastructure that enables ubiquitous wireless connectivity, radio frequency power amplifiers (RFPAs) are constantly pushed to the limits of linear but efficient operation. Digital predistortion, as a means of circumventing the limitations of this inherent linearity – efficiency trade-off, has been a subject of prolific research for well over a decade. However, to support the unrestrained growth of broadband mobile traffic, wireless networks are expected to rely increasingly on heterogeneously-sized small cells which necessitate new predistortion solutions operating at a fraction of the power consumed by digital predistortion approaches.
This thesis pertains to an emerging area of research involving analog predistortion (APD) – a promising, low-power alternative to digital predistortion (DPD) for future wireless networks. Specifically, it proposes a mathematical function that can be used by the predistorter to linearize RFPAs. As a preliminary step, the challenges of transitioning from DPD to APD are identified and used to formulate the constraints that APD imposes on the predistorter function. Following an assessment of the mathematical functions commonly used for DPD, and an analysis of the physical mechanisms of RFPA distortion, a new candidate function is proposed. This function is both compatible with and feasible for an APD implementation, and offers competitive performance against more complex predistorter functions (that can only be implemented in DPD).
The proposed predistorter function and its associated coefficient identification procedure are experimentally validated by using them to linearize an RFPA stimulated with single-band carrier aggregated signals of progressively wider bandwidths. The solution is then extended to the case of dual-band transmission, and subsequently validated on an RFPA as well. The proposed function is a cascade of a finite impulse response filter and an envelope memory polynomial and has the potential to deliver far better linearization results than what has been demonstrated to date in the APD literature
