    A method for mechanical generation of radio frequency fields in nuclear magnetic resonance force microscopy

    We present an innovative method for magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM) with ultra-low dissipation, by using the higher modes of the mechanical detector as radio frequency (rf) source. This method allows MRFM on samples without the need to be close to an rf source. Furthermore, since rf sources require currents that give dissipation, our method enables nuclear magnetic resonance experiments at ultra-low temperatures.     Inductive angular position sensors (IAPS) are widely used for high accuracy and low cost angular position sensing in harsh automotive environments, such as suspension height sensor and throttle body position sensor. These sensors ensure high resolution and long lifetime due to their contactless sensing mode and their simple structure. Furthermore, they are suitable for wider application areas. For instance, they can be miniaturized to fit into a compact packaging space, or be adopted to measure the relative angle of multiple rotating targets for the purposes of torque sensing. In this work, a detailed SIMULINK model of an IAPS is first proposed in order to study and characterize the sensor performance. The model is validated by finite element analysis and circuit simulation, which provides a powerful design tool for sensor performance analysis. The sensor error introduced by geometry imperfection is thoroughly investigated for two-phase and three-phase configurations, and a corresponding correction method to improve the accuracy is proposed. A design optimization method based on the response surface methodology is also developed and used in the sensor development. Three types of sensors are developed to demonstrate the inductive sensor technology. The first type is the miniaturized inductive sensor. To compensate for the weak signal strength and the reduced quality (Q) factor due to the scaling down effect, a resonant rotor is developed for this type of sensor. This sensor is fabricated by using the electrodeposition technique. The prototype shows an 8mm diameter sensor can function well at 1.5mm air gap. The second type is a steering torque sensor, which is designed to detect the relative torsional angle of a rotating torsional shaft. It demonstrates the mutual coupling of multiple inductive sensors. By selecting a proper layout and compensation algorithm, the torque sensor can achieve 0.1 degree accuracy. The third type is a passive inductive sensor, which is designed to reduce power consumption and electromagnetic emissions. The realization and excellent performance of these three types of sensors have shown the robustness of the inductive sensor technology and its potential applications. The research conducted in this dissertation is expected to improve understanding of the performance analysis of IAPS and provide useful guidelines for the design and performance optimization of inductive sensors

    Simulating eddy current sensor outputs for blade tip timing

    Blade tip timing is a contactless method used to monitor the vibration of blades in rotating machinery. Blade vibration and clearance are important diagnostic features for condition monitoring, including the detection of blade cracks. Eddy current sensors are a practical choice for blade tip timing and have been used extensively. As the data requirements from the timing measurement become more stringent and the systems become more complicated, including the use of multiple sensors, the ability to fully understand and optimize the measurement system becomes more important. This requires detailed modeling of eddy current sensors in the blade tip timing application; the current approaches often rely on experimental trials. Existing simulations for eddy current sensors have not considered the particular case of a blade rotating past the sensor. Hence, the novel aspect of this article is the development of a detailed quasi-static finite element model of the electro-magnetic field to simulate the integrated measured output of the sensor. This model is demonstrated by simulating the effect of tip clearance, blade geometry, and blade velocity on the output of the eddy current sensor. This allows an understanding of the sources of error in the blade time of arrival estimate and hence insight into the accuracy of the blade vibration measurement

    This paper presents four complementary non-destructive measurement techniques for material characterization and damage detection of turbine blades. The techniques are macroscopic fringe projection with inverse fringe projection algorithms, robot guided microscale fringe projection, high frequency eddy current and pulsed high frequency induction thermography, both in the megahertz range. The specimen on which the measurements were carried out is a blade of the 1st stage high pressure turbine of a modern airplane jet engine. The turbine blade was characterized with regard to the macroscopic and microscopic geometry, cracks in the base material as well as the condition of the protective layer system

    Automated inspection system for NDT of steel plates

    The aim of the research project is to automate NDT data acquisition and analysis on large steel plates with an ultrasonic inspection technique that is implemented with robotics instrumentation. The project researches NDT sensor deployment, ultrasonic data acquisition and analysis and intelligent flaw detection. A robotic system has been developed for the inspection of internal imperfections in flat steel plates and produces a map of defective areas. It is a magnetic vehicle with a self-navigating system that carries 16 transducers for ultrasonic testing. The software that has been developed controls the scan trajectory of the vehicle and locates and plots position of the ultrasonic sensors and the presence of any defects at these positions. Internal imperfections in the steel plate are detected by monitoring the backwall echo or the echo associated with an imperfection during the scanning. The system has easy mobility to carry out inspection from site to site and a display and image processing system to analyse and show results of the ultrasonic inspection

    Analysis of Tilt Effect on Notch Depth Profiling Using Thin-Skin Regime of Driver-Pickup Eddy-Current Sensor

    Electromagnetic eddy current sensors are commonly used to identify and quantify the surface notches of metals. However, the unintentional tilt of eddy current sensors affects results of size profiling, particularly for the depth profiling. In this paper, based on the eddy current thin-skin regime, a revised algorithm has been proposed for the analytical voltage or impedance of a tilted driver–pickup eddy current sensor scanning across a long ideal notch. Considering the resolution of the measurement, the bespoke driver–pickup, also termed as transmitter–receiver (T-R) sensor is designed with a small mean radius of 1 mm. In addition, the T-R sensor is connected to the electromagnetic instrument and controlled by a scanning stage with high spatial travel resolution, with a limit of 0.2 μm and selected as 0.25 mm. Experiments were conducted for imaging of an aluminium sheet with seven machined long notches of different depths using T-R sensor under different tilt angles. By fitting the measured voltage (both real and imaginary part) with proposed analytical algorithms, the depth profiling of notches is less affected by the tilt angle of sensors. From the results, the depth of notches can be retrieved within a deviation of 10% for tilt angles up to 60 degrees
