    Incipient fault diagnosis of roller bearing using optimized wavelet transform based multi-speed vibration signatures

    Condition monitoring and incipient fault diagnosis of rolling bearing is of great importance to detect failures and ensure reliable operations in rotating machinery. In this paper, a new multi-speed fault diagnostic approach is presented by using self-adaptive wavelet transform components generated from bearing vibration signals. The proposed approach is capable of discriminating signatures from four conditions of rolling bearing, i.e. normal bearing and three different types of defected bearings on outer race, inner race and roller separately. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS) based quasi-Newton minimization algorithms are applied to seek optimal parameters of Impulse Modelling based Continuous Wavelet Transform (IMCWT) model. Then, a three-dimensional feature space of the statistical parameters and a Nearest Neighbor (NN) classifier are respectively applied for fault signature extraction and fault classification. Effectiveness of this approach is then evaluated, and the results have achieved an overall accuracy of 100%. Moreover, the generated discriminatory fault signatures are suitable for multi-speed fault data sets. This technique will be further implemented and tested in a real industrial environment

    A method based on multiscale base-scale entropy and random forests for roller bearings faults diagnosis

    A method based on multiscale base-scale entropy (MBSE) and random forests (RF) for roller bearings faults diagnosis is presented in this study. Firstly, the roller bearings vibration signals were decomposed into base-scale entropy (BSE), sample entropy (SE) and permutation entropy (PE) values by using MBSE, multiscale sample entropy (MSE) and multiscale permutation entropy (MPE) under different scales. Then the computation time of the MBSE/MSE/MPE methods were compared. Secondly, the entropy values of BSE, SE, and PE under different scales were regarded as the input of RF and SVM optimized by particle swarm ion (PSO) and genetic algorithm (GA) algorithms for fulfilling the fault identification, and the classification accuracy was utilized to verify the effect of the MBSE/MSE/MPE methods by using RF/PSO/GA-SVM models. Finally, the experiment result shows that the computational efficiency and classification accuracy of MBSE method are superior to MSE and MPE with RF and SVM

    Forecasting bus passenger flows by using a clustering-based support vector regression approach

    As a significant component of the intelligent transportation system, forecasting bus passenger flows plays a key role in resource allocation, network planning, and frequency setting. However, it remains challenging to recognize high fluctuations, nonlinearity, and periodicity of bus passenger flows due to varied destinations and departure times. For this reason, a novel forecasting model named as affinity propagation-based support vector regression (AP-SVR) is proposed based on clustering and nonlinear simulation. For the addressed approach, a clustering algorithm is first used to generate clustering-based intervals. A support vector regression (SVR) is then exploited to forecast the passenger flow for each cluster, with the use of particle swarm optimization (PSO) for obtaining the optimized parameters. Finally, the prediction results of the SVR are rearranged by chronological order rearrangement. The proposed model is tested using real bus passenger data from a bus line over four months. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model performs better than other peer models in terms of absolute percentage error and mean absolute percentage error. It is recommended that the deterministic clustering technique with stable cluster results (AP) can improve the forecasting performance significantly.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Rolling element bearings play a crucial role in determining the overall health condition of a rotating machine. An effective condition-monitoring program on bearing operation can improve a machine’s operation efficiency, reduce the maintenance/replacement cost, and prolong the useful lifespan of a machine. This chapter presents a general overview of various condition-monitoring and fault diagnosis techniques for rolling element bearings in the current practice and discusses the pros and cons of each technique. The techniques introduced in the chapter include data acquisition techniques, major parameters used for bearing condition monitoring, signal analysis techniques, and bearing fault diagnosis techniques using either statistical features or artificial intelligent tools. Several case studies are also presented in the chapter to exemplify the application of these techniques in the data analysis as well as bearing fault diagnosis and pattern recognition

    Detection of Epileptic Seizures on EEG Signals Using ANFIS Classifier, Autoencoders and Fuzzy Entropies

    Epileptic seizures are one of the most crucial neurological disorders, and their early diagnosis will help the clinicians to provide accurate treatment for the patients. The electroencephalogram (EEG) signals are widely used for epileptic seizures detection, which provides specialists with substantial information about the functioning of the brain. In this paper, a novel diagnostic procedure using fuzzy theory and deep learning techniques is introduced. The proposed method is evaluated on the Bonn University dataset with six classification combinations and also on the Freiburg dataset. The tunable- Q wavelet transform (TQWT) is employed to decompose the EEG signals into different sub-bands. In the feature extraction step, 13 different fuzzy entropies are calculated from different sub-bands of TQWT, and their computational complexities are calculated to help researchers choose the best set for various tasks. In the following, an autoencoder (AE) with six layers is employed for dimensionality reduction. Finally, the standard adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), and also its variants with grasshopper optimization algorithm (ANFIS-GOA), particle swarm optimization (ANFIS-PSO), and breeding swarm optimization (ANFIS-BS) methods are used for classification. Using our proposed method, ANFIS-BS method has obtained an accuracy of 99.7

    Machine learning and deep learning based methods toward Industry 4.0 predictive maintenance in induction motors: Α state of the art survey

    Purpose: Developments in Industry 4.0 technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) have enabled data-driven manufacturing. Predictive maintenance (PdM) has therefore become the prominent approach for fault detection and diagnosis (FD/D) of induction motors (IMs). The maintenance and early FD/D of IMs are critical processes, considering that they constitute the main power source in the industrial production environment. Machine learning (ML) methods have enhanced the performance and reliability of PdM. Various deep learning (DL) based FD/D methods have emerged in recent years, providing automatic feature engineering and learning and thereby alleviating drawbacks of traditional ML based methods. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of ML and DL based FD/D methods of IMs that have emerged since 2015. An overview of the main DL architectures used for this purpose is also presented. A discussion of the recent trends is given as well as future directions for research. Design/methodology/approach: A comprehensive survey has been carried out through all available publication databases using related keywords. Classification of the reviewed works has been done according to the main ML and DL techniques and algorithms Findings: DL based PdM methods have been mainly introduced and implemented for IM fault diagnosis in recent years. Novel DL FD/D methods are based on single DL techniques as well as hybrid techniques. DL methods have also been used for signal preprocessing and moreover, have been combined with traditional ML algorithms to enhance the FD/D performance in feature engineering. Publicly available datasets have been mostly used to test the performance of the developed methods, however industrial datasets should become available as well. Multi-agent system (MAS) based PdM employing ML classifiers has been explored. Several methods have investigated multiple IM faults, however, the presence of multiple faults occurring simultaneously has rarely been investigated.     Study on a novel fault diagnosis method based on information fusion method

    For the low accuracy and calculation speed of traditional fault diagnosis methods, the chaos optimization algorithm (COA), quantum particle swarm optimization (QPSO) algorithm and support vector machine (SVM) are introduced into the fault diagnosis to propose a novel fault diagnosis (CQPSMFD) method in this paper. In the proposed CQPSMFD method, the COA is used to initialize the parameters of the QPSO algorithm in order to obtain the CQPSO algorithm with the better convergence speed. Then the CQPSO algorithm is used to optimize the parameters of the SVM model to construct a high-precision SVM model (CQPSM) with the higher accuracy and stronger generalization ability. Next, the CQPSMFD method based on CQPSM method is proposed for motor. Finally, the experiment data from Case Western bearing dataset and actual motor are selected to verify the CQPSMFD method. The results show that the CQPSO algorithm can obtain the optimal parameter combination and the CQPSMFD method can effectively improve the fault diagnosis accuracy and speed

    Prognostics and health management for maintenance practitioners - Review, implementation and tools evaluation.

    In literature, prognostics and health management (PHM) systems have been studied by many researchers from many different engineering fields to increase system reliability, availability, safety and to reduce the maintenance cost of engineering assets. Many works conducted in PHM research concentrate on designing robust and accurate models to assess the health state of components for particular applications to support decision making. Models which involve mathematical interpretations, assumptions and approximations make PHM hard to understand and implement in real world applications, especially by maintenance practitioners in industry. Prior knowledge to implement PHM in complex systems is crucial to building highly reliable systems. To fill this gap and motivate industry practitioners, this paper attempts to provide a comprehensive review on PHM domain and discusses important issues on uncertainty quantification, implementation aspects next to prognostics feature and tool evaluation. In this paper, PHM implementation steps consists of; (1) critical component analysis, (2) appropriate sensor selection for condition monitoring (CM), (3) prognostics feature evaluation under data analysis and (4) prognostics methodology and tool evaluation matrices derived from PHM literature. Besides PHM implementation aspects, this paper also reviews previous and on-going research in high-speed train bogies to highlight problems faced in train industry and emphasize the significance of PHM for further investigations
