    On the Solution of Linear Programming Problems in the Age of Big Data

    The Big Data phenomenon has spawned large-scale linear programming problems. In many cases, these problems are non-stationary. In this paper, we describe a new scalable algorithm called NSLP for solving high-dimensional, non-stationary linear programming problems on modern cluster computing systems. The algorithm consists of two phases: Quest and Targeting. The Quest phase calculates a solution of the system of inequalities defining the constraint system of the linear programming problem under the condition of dynamic changes in input data. To this end, the apparatus of Fejer mappings is used. The Targeting phase forms a special system of points having the shape of an n-dimensional axisymmetric cross.     Partially Observed Non-linear Risk-sensitive Optimal Stopping Control for Non-linear Discrete-time Systems

    In this paper we introduce and solve the partially observed optimal stopping non-linear risk-sensitive stochastic control problem for discrete-time non-linear systems. The presented results are closely related to previous results for finite horizon partially observed risk-sensitive stochastic control problem. An information state approach is used and a new (three-way) separation principle established that leads to a forward dynamic programming equation and a backward dynamic programming inequality equation (both infinite dimensional). A verification theorem is given that establishes the optimal control and optimal stopping time. The risk-neutral optimal stopping stochastic control problem is also discussed

    Violator Spaces: Structure and Algorithms

    Sharir and Welzl introduced an abstract framework for optimization problems, called LP-type problems or also generalized linear programming problems, which proved useful in algorithm design. We define a new, and as we believe, simpler and more natural framework: violator spaces, which constitute a proper generalization of LP-type problems. We show that Clarkson's randomized algorithms for low-dimensional linear programming work in the context of violator spaces. For example, in this way we obtain the fastest known algorithm for the P-matrix generalized linear complementarity problem with a constant number of blocks.     This poster proposes a new procedure in agriculture supply modelling by the positive mathematical programming (PMP) approach. This approach is now widely used in last CAP reform simulations. However, simulation behaviour and performances of PMP procedures depend of the way parameters of the non linear total cost function in the objective function are recovered. We propose a new specification of the total cost function where land is explicitly considered as a fixed input. By using relative parts of land of the different activities this new PMP procedure permits to better capture production behaviour when economic conditions.     Finding lower bounds on the complexity of secret sharing schemes by linear programming

    Optimizing the maximum, or average, length of the shares in relation to the length of the secret for every given access structure is a difficult and long-standing open problem in cryptology. Most of the known lower bounds on these parameters have been obtained by implicitly or explicitly using that every secret sharing scheme defines a polymatroid related to the access structure. The best bounds that can be obtained by this combinatorial method can be determined by using linear programming, and this can be effectively done for access structures on a small number of participants. By applying this linear programming approach, we improve some of the known lower bounds for the access structures on five participants and the graph access structures on six participants for which these parameters were still undetermined. Nevertheless, the lower bounds that are obtained by this combinatorial method are not tight in general. For some access structures, they can be improved by adding to the linear program non-Shannon information inequalities as new constraints. We obtain in this way new separation results for some graph access structures on eight participants and for some ports of non-representable matroids.     Exponential Lower Bounds for Polytopes in Combinatorial Optimization

    We solve a 20-year old problem posed by Yannakakis and prove that there exists no polynomial-size linear program (LP) whose associated polytope projects to the traveling salesman polytope, even if the LP is not required to be symmetric. Moreover, we prove that this holds also for the cut polytope and the stable set polytope. These results were discovered through a new connection that we make between one-way quantum communication protocols and semidefinite programming reformulations of LPs.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures.
