    Computational Methods for Computer Vision : Minimal Solvers and Convex Relaxations

    Robust fitting of geometric models is a core problem in computer vision. The most common approach is to use a hypothesize-and-test framework, such as RANSAC. In these frameworks the model is estimated from as few measurements as possible, which minimizes the risk of selecting corrupted measurements. These estimation problems are called minimal problems, and they can often be formulated as systems of polynomial equations. In this thesis we present new methods for building so-called minimal solvers or polynomial solvers, which are specialized code for solving such systems. On several minimal problems we improve on the state-of-the-art both with respect to numerical stability and execution time.In many computer vision problems low rank matrices naturally occur. The rank can serve as a measure of model complexity and typically a low rank is desired. Optimization problems containing rank penalties or constraints are in general difficult. Recently convex relaxations, such as the nuclear norm, have been used to make these problems tractable. In this thesis we present new convex relaxations for rank-based optimization which avoid drawbacks of previous approaches and provide tighter relaxations. We evaluate our methods on a number of real and synthetic datasets and show state-of-the-art results

    Bernstein-Sato polynomial of plane curves and Yano's conjecture

    The main aim of this thesis is the study of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial of plane curve singularities. In this context, we prove a conjecture posed by Yano about the generic b-exponents of a plane irreducible curve. In a part of the thesis, we study the Bernstein-Sato polynomial through the analytic continuation of the complex zeta function of a singularity. We obtain several results on the vanishing and non-vanishing of the residues of the complex zeta function. Using these results we obtain a proof of Yano's conjecture under the hypothesis that the eigenvalues of the monodromy are pair-wise different. In another part of the thesis, we study the periods of integrals in the Milnor fiber and their asymptotic expansion. These periods of integrals can be related to the b-exponents and can be constructed in terms of resolution of singularities. Using these techniques, we can present a proof for the general case of Yano's conjecture. In addition to the Bernstein-Sato polynomial, we also study the minimal Tjurina number of a plane irreducible curve and we answer in the positive a question raised by Dimca and Greuel on the quotient between the Milnor and Tjurina numbers. More precisely, we prove a formula for the minimal Tjurina number of a plane irreducible curve in terms of the multiplicities of the strict transform along its minimal resolution. From this formula, we obtain the positive answer to Dimca and Greuel question. This thesis also contains computational results for the theory of singularities on smooth complex surfaces. First, we describe an algorithm to compute log-resolutions of ideals on a smooth complex surface. Secondly, we provide an algorithm to compute generators for complete ideals on a smooth complex surface. These algorithms have several applications, for instance, in the computation of the multiplier ideals associated to an ideal on a smooth complex surface.El principal objectiu d'aquesta tesi és l'estudi del polinomi de Bernstein-Sato de singularitats de corbes planes. En aquest context, es demostra una conjectura proposada per Yano el 1982 sobre els b b -exponents genèrics d'una corba plana irreductible. En una part d'aquesta tesi, s'estudia el polinomi de Bernstein-Sato utilitzant la continuació analítica de la funció zeta complexa d'una singularitat. S'obtenen diversos resultat sobre l'anul·lació i no anul·lació del residu de la funció zeta complexa d'una corba plana. Exact combinatorial optimization algorithms, in which the complexity relative to the source data is characterized by a low, or even first degree, polynomial (1 article). III. Applications of mathematical logic and the theory of algorithms (2 articles). The first article deals with the Jacobian and M. Kontsevich’s conjectures, and algorithmic undecidability; for these purposes, non-standard analysis is used.     Multipartite Quantum States and their Marginals

    Subsystems of composite quantum systems are described by reduced density matrices, or quantum marginals. Important physical properties often do not depend on the whole wave function but rather only on the marginals. Not every collection of reduced density matrices can arise as the marginals of a quantum state. Instead, there are profound compatibility conditions -- such as Pauli's exclusion principle or the monogamy of quantum entanglement -- which fundamentally influence the physics of many-body quantum systems and the structure of quantum information. The aim of this thesis is a systematic and rigorous study of the general relation between multipartite quantum states, i.e., states of quantum systems that are composed of several subsystems, and their marginals. In the first part, we focus on the one-body marginals of multipartite quantum states; in the second part, we study general quantum marginals from the perspective of entropy.Comment: PhD thesis, ETH Zurich. Apresentamos resultados relacionados sobretudo a propriedades homológicas de finitude de tais estruturas algébricas. Primeiramente, discutimos Sigma-invariantes de produtos entrelaçados de grupos discretos. Descrevemos completamente o invariante Sigma1, relacionado à herança por subgrupos da propriedade de ser finitamente gerado, e descrevemos parcialmente o invariante Sigma2, relacionado à herança por subgrupos da propriedade de admitir uma apresentação finita. Aplicamos tais resultados ao estudo de números de Reidemeister de isomorfismos de certos produtos entrelaçados. Na sequência definimos e estudamos uma versão da construção de comutatividade fraca de Sidki na categoria de álgebras de Lie sobre um corpo de característica diferente de dois. Tal construção pode ser vista como um funtor que recebe uma álgebra de Lie g e retorna um certo quociente chi(g) da soma livre de duas cópias isomorfas de g. Demonstramos resultados sobre a preservação de certas propriedades algébricas por tal funtor e mostramos que o multiplicador de Schur de g é um subquociente de chi(g). Mostramos em particular que, para uma álgebra de Lie livre g de posto ao menos três, chi(g) é finitamente apresentável mas não é de tipo FP3 , e tem dimensão cohomológica infinita. Por fim, consideramos também uma versão da construção de comutatividade fraca na categoria de grupos pro-p para um número primo fixado p. Mostramos que tal construção também preserva diversas propriedades algébricas, como ocorre nos casos de grupos discretos e álgebras de Lie. Para tanto estudamos também produtos subdiretos de grupos pro-p; em particular demonstramos uma versão do Teorema (n ? 1) ? n ? (n + 1)Abstract: We consider problems in the theories of discrete groups, Lie algebras, and pro-p groups. We present results related mainly to homological finiteness properties of such algebraic structures. First, we discuss Sigma-invariants of wreath products of discrete groups. We give a complete description of the Sigma1-invariant, which is related to the inheritance of the property of being finitely generated by subgroups. We also describe partially the invariant Sigma2, which is related to the inheritance of finite presentability by subgroups. We apply such results in the study of Reidemeister numbers of isomorphisms of certain wreath products. Then we define and study a version of Sidki¿s weak commutativity construction in the category of Lie algebras over a field whose characteristic is not two. Such construction can be seen as a functor that receives a Lie algebra g and returns a certain quotient chi(g) of the free sum of two isomorphic copies of g. We prove some results on the preservation of certain algebraic properties by this functor, and we show that the Schur multiplier of g is a subquotient of chi(g). We show in particular that, for a free Lie algebra g with at least three free generators, chi(g) is finitely presentable but not of type FP3 , and has infinite cohomological dimension. Finally, we also consider a version of the weak commutativity construction in the category of pro-p groups for a fixed prime number p. We show that such construction also preserves several algebraic properties, as occurs in the cases of discrete groups and Lie algebras. To this end, we also study subdirect products of pro-p groups.
