    Nondestructive Testing in Composite Materials

    In this era of technological progress and given the need for welfare and safety, everything that is manufactured and maintained must comply with such needs. We would all like to live in a safe house that will not collapse on us. We would all like to walk on a safe road and never see a chasm open in front of us. We would all like to cross a bridge and reach the other side safely. We all would like to feel safe and secure when taking a plane, ship, train, or using any equipment. All this may be possible with the adoption of adequate manufacturing processes, with non-destructive inspection of final parts and monitoring during the in-service life of components. Above all, maintenance should be imperative. This requires effective non-destructive testing techniques and procedures. This Special Issue is a collection of some of the latest research in these areas, aiming to highlight new ideas and ways to deal with challenging issues worldwide. Different types of materials and structures are considered, different non-destructive testing techniques are employed with new approaches for data treatment proposed as well as numerical simulations. This can serve as food for thought for the community involved in the inspection of materials and structures as well as condition monitoring

    A New Look at Hard Labor Creek Observatory

    This document presents a study of astronomical observing conditions of Hard Labor Creek Observatory. Analysis of factors such as sky brightness, astonomical seeing, and patterns in the level of cloudiness at the site are presented. Characteristics of the observatory\u27s Apogee Alta U230 camera are also measured and calculated. These characteristics include loss of linearity in the CCD\u27s response to light, read noise, gain, dark current, and stability in the camera\u27s bias levels. The camera is also used in conjunction with the 20-inch RC Optics telescope to determine the system\u27s pixel scale and a set of limiting magnitudes for the Johnson-Cousins photometric filters that are used with the camera. Observations of a transit of known transiting exoplanet Qatar-2 b as well as observations of the open cluster Messier 29 are also performed to demonstrate the ability of the equipment to perform precise photometric observations

    Advanced Turbine Technology Applications Project (ATTAP)

    Work to develop and demonstrate the technology of structural ceramics for automotive engines and similar applications is described. Long-range technology is being sought to produce gas turbine engines for automobiles with reduced fuel consumption and reduced environmental impact. The Advanced Turbine Technology Application Project (ATTAP) test bed engine is designed such that, when installed in a 3,000 pound inertia weight automobile, it will provide low emissions, 42 miles per gallon fuel economy on diesel fuel, multifuel capability, costs competitive with current spark ignition engines, and noise and safety characteristics that meet Federal standards

    Investigating the performance of transport infrastructure using real-time data and a scalable multi-modal agent based model

    The idea that including more information in more dynamic and iterative ways is central to the promise of the big data paradigm. The hope is that via new data sources, such as remote sensors and mobile phones, the reliance on heavily simplified generalised functions for model inputs will be erased. This trade between idealised and actual empirical data will be matched with dynamic models which consider complexity at a fundamental level, inherently mirroring the systems they are attempting to replicate. Cloud computing brings the possibility of doing all of this, in less time than the simplified macro models of the past, thus enabling better answers and at the time of critical decision making junctures. This research was task driven - the question of high speed rail versus aviation led to an investigation into the simplifications and assumptions that back up many of the commonly held beliefs on the sustainability of different modes of transport. The literature ultimately highlighted the need for context specific information; actual load factors, actual journey times considering traffic/engineering works and so on. Thus, rather than being explicitly an exercise in answering a specific question, a specific question was used to drive the development of a tool which may hold promise for answering a range of transportation related questions. The original contributions of this work are, firstly the use of real-time data sources to quantify temporally and spatially dynamic network performance metrics (eg. journey times on different transport models) and secondly to organise these data sources in a framework which can handle the volume and type of the data and organise the data in a way so that it is useful for the dynamic agent based modelling of future scenarios.EPSRC I Case Studentship with Ove Arup & Partner
