A New Theoretical Framework for Artifact-Mediated Regulation
In this paper, we attempt to integrate the traditionally disparate concepts of technology design, use and
organizational practice in organizational studies. Using Jean-Daniel Reynaudâs joint-regulation theory, we
demonstrate how these traditionally separate perspectives on ICT-related practice and organizational change process can be brought together under the umbrella of a practice-based view emphasizing rule-setting in organizations.
Further, we synthesize existing accounts of practice-based view on organizational processes to introduce the notion
of artifact-mediated regulation. It is argued that combined with Reynaudâs joint-regulation theory, the proposed notion of artifact-mediated regulation provides a tool for holistic analysis of the dynamics between ICT design and use and organizational practice.ou
The affectively extended self: A pragmatist approach
In this paper we suggest an understanding of the self within the conceptual framework of situated affectivity, proposing the notion of an affectively extended self and arguing that the construction, diachronic re-shaping and maintenance of the self is mediated first by affective interactions. We initially consider the different variations on the conception of the extended self that have been already proposed in the literature (Clark & Chalmers 1998; Heersmink 2017, 2018; Krueger 2018; Wilson, Lenart 2015). We then propose our alternative, contextualising it within the current debate on situated affectivity. While the idea that we exploit the external environment in order to manage our affective life is now rather widespread among philosophers (e.g. Colombetti & Krueger 2015, Piredda 2019), its potential consequences for and connections with the debate on the self remain underexplored. Drawing on Jamesâ intuition of the âmaterial selfâ, which clearly connects the self and the emotions in agency, and broadly envisioning an extension of the self beyond its organismic boundaries, we propose our pragmatist conception of the self: an affectively extended self that relies on affective artifacts and practices to construct its identity extended beyond skin and skull
Experimental effects and causal representations
In experimental settings, scientists often âmakeâ new things, in which case the aim is to intervene in order to produce experimental objects and processesâcharacterized as âeffectsâ. In this discussion, I illuminate an important performative function in measurement and experimentation in general: intervention-based experimental production (IEP). I argue that even though the goal of IEP is the production of new effects, it can be informative for causal details in scientific representations. Specifically, IEP can be informative about causal relations in: regularities under study; âintervention systemsâ, which are measurement/experimental systems; and new technological systems

Rules, Practices and Information Technology (IT): A Trifecta of Organizational Regulation
As information technology (IT) based regulation has become critical and pervasive for contemporary organizing, Information Systems research turns mostly a deaf ear to the topic. Current explanations of IT-based regulation fit into received frameworks such as structuration theory, actor-network theory, or neo-institutional analyses but fail to recognize the unique capacities IT and related IT based regulatory practices offer as a powerful regulatory means.
Any IT-based regulation system is made up of rules, practices and IT artifacts and their relationships. We propose this trifecta as a promising lens to study IT-based regulation in that it sensitizes scholars into how IT artifacts mediate rules and constitute regulatory processes embracing rules, capacities of IT endowed by the artifact, and organizational practices. We review the concepts of rules and IT-based regulation and identify two gaps in the current research on organizational regulation: 1)the critical role of sense-making as part of IT based regulation, and 2)the challenge of temporally coupling rules and their enactment during IT based regulation. To address these gaps we introduce the concept of regulatory episode as a unit of analysis for studying IT-based regulation. We also formulate a tentative research agenda for IT-based regulation that focuses on tensions triggered by the three key elements of the IT-based regulatory processes
The influence of a collaborative procurement approach using integrated design in construction on project team performance
Purpose â The purpose of the paper is to study the influence of procurement on the performance of integrated design teams.
Design/methodology/approach â The research paradigm is based on Russian socio-constructivist approach to activity theory. Activity theory, as opposed to natural or social science, is a design science approach that focuses on the context aspect of project. A triangulation of qualitative research methods is used to investigate the dynamic of integrated teams in two different procurement contexts.
Findings â The paper is conclusive regarding the influence of procurement on team efficiency. It demonstrates that traditional procurement processes reinforce socio-cognitive barriers that hinder team efficiency. It also illustrates how new procurement modes can transform the dynamic of relationships between the client and the members of the supply chain, and have a positive impact on teamperformance.
Practical implications â The paper demonstrates first that problems with integrated design team efficiency are related to context and not process â they are not technical but socio-cognitive; second that fragmented transactional contracting increases socio-cognitive barriers that hinder integrated design team performance; third that new forms of relational contracting may help to mitigate socio-cognitive barriers and improve integrated design team performance, fourth that changing the context through procurement does not address the problem of obsolete design practices.
Originality/value â The paper brings together theories of production in lean construction and social learning as a rival approach to traditional project management theory for demonstrating the importance of context on team performance
Evolutionary constraints on the complexity of genetic regulatory networks allow predictions of the total number of genetic interactions
Genetic regulatory networks (GRNs) have been widely studied, yet there is a
lack of understanding with regards to the final size and properties of these
networks, mainly due to no network currently being complete. In this study, we
analyzed the distribution of GRN structural properties across a large set of
distinct prokaryotic organisms and found a set of constrained characteristics
such as network density and number of regulators. Our results allowed us to
estimate the number of interactions that complete networks would have, a
valuable insight that could aid in the daunting task of network curation,
prediction, and validation. Using state-of-the-art statistical approaches, we
also provided new evidence to settle a previously stated controversy that
raised the possibility of complete biological networks being random and
therefore attributing the observed scale-free properties to an artifact
emerging from the sampling process during network discovery. Furthermore, we
identified a set of properties that enabled us to assess the consistency of the
connectivity distribution for various GRNs against different alternative
statistical distributions. Our results favor the hypothesis that highly
connected nodes (hubs) are not a consequence of network incompleteness.
Finally, an interaction coverage computed for the GRNs as a proxy for
completeness revealed that high-throughput based reconstructions of GRNs could
yield biased networks with a low average clustering coefficient, showing that

Information technology as boundary object for transformational learning
Collaborative work is considered as a way to improve productivity and value generation in
construction. However, recent research demonstrates that socio-cognitive factors related to fragmentation of specialized knowledge may hinder team performance. New methods based on theories of practice are emerging in Computer Supported Collaborative Work and organisational learning to break these knowledge boundaries,
facilitating knowledge sharing and the generation of new knowledge through transformational learning. According to these theories, objects used in professional practice play a key role in mediating interactions. Rules and methods related to these practices are also embedded in these objects. Therefore changing collaborative
patterns demand reconfiguring objects that are at the boundary between specialized practices, namely boundary objects. This research is unique in presenting an IT strategy in which technology is used as a boundary object to facilitate transformational learning in collaborative design work
Beyond Adoption Intention: Online Communities and Member Motivation to Contribute Longitudinally
As online communities are becoming more and more relevant to business, it is critical to understand why individuals are motivated to contribute content longitudinally. In this paper, we draw on existing literature on motivation and technology characteristics to conceptualize a model of longitudinal content contribution. We view longitudinal content contribution phenomenon as a recursive process of interaction between contributors, other participants and IT artifact of online communities. We conclude with the implications of our conceptual model for future research
