    On the Selection of Tuning Methodology of FOPID Controllers for the Control of Higher Order Processes

    In this paper, a comparative study is done on the time and frequency domain tuning strategies for fractional order (FO) PID controllers to handle higher order processes. A new fractional order template for reduced parameter modeling of stable minimum/non-minimum phase higher order processes is introduced and its advantage in frequency domain tuning of FOPID controllers is also presented. The time domain optimal tuning of FOPID controllers have also been carried out to handle these higher order processes by performing optimization with various integral performance indices. The paper highlights on the practical control system implementation issues like flexibility of online autotuning, reduced control signal and actuator size, capability of measurement noise filtration, load disturbance suppression, robustness against parameter uncertainties etc. in light of the above tuning methodologies.Comment: 27 pages, 10 figure

    Controller Tuning Using System Identification

    In the industries today, less attention has been put on the development of a unified tuning approach for Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller of Single Input Single Output (SISO) system and Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) system. The current tuning methods are limited and specific to particular systems. This paper focuses on the development of a unified controller tuning method based on Internal Model Control (IMC) method and system identification using software Matlab Simulink. The controller tuning performance of the proposed method tested on SISO and MIMO systems are being compared with the performance shown by the existing tuning methods; Ziegler-Nichols (ZN) and Simple Internal Model Control (SIMC). The evaluation of performance measurement is done based on Integral Absolute Error (IAE), Integral Square Error (ISE), Integral Time-weighted Absolute Error (ITAE) and Total Input Variation (TV). It is observed that the proposed unified tuning method is effective for tuning on SISO and MIMO systems and gives better performance than ZN and SIMC in terms of IAE, ISE, ITAE and TV in both set point tracking and disturbance rejection

    Handling packet dropouts and random delays for unstable delayed processes in NCS by optimal tuning of PIλDμ controllers with evolutionary algorithms

The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record.The issues of stochastically varying network delays and packet dropouts in Networked Control System (NCS) applications have been simultaneously addressed by time domain optimal tuning of fractional order (FO) PID controllers. Different variants of evolutionary algorithms are used for the tuning process and their performances are compared. Also the effectiveness of the fractional order PI(λ)D(μ) controllers over their integer order counterparts is looked into. Two standard test bench plants with time delay and unstable poles which are encountered in process control applications are tuned with the proposed method to establish the validity of the tuning methodology. The proposed tuning methodology is independent of the specific choice of plant and is also applicable for less complicated systems. Thus it is useful in a wide variety of scenarios.     A Novel Fractional Order Fuzzy PID Controller and Its Optimal Time Domain Tuning Based on Integral Performance Indices

    A novel fractional order (FO) fuzzy Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller has been proposed in this paper which works on the closed loop error and its fractional derivative as the input and has a fractional integrator in its output. The fractional order differ-integrations in the proposed fuzzy logic controller (FLC) are kept as design variables along with the input-output scaling factors (SF) and are optimized with Genetic Algorithm (GA) while minimizing several integral error indices along with the control signal as the objective function. Simulations studies are carried out to control a delayed nonlinear process and an open loop unstable process with time delay. The closed loop performances and controller efforts in each case are compared with conventional PID, fuzzy PID and PI{\lambda}D{\mu} controller subjected to different integral performance indices. Simulation results show that the proposed fractional order fuzzy PID controller outperforms the others in most cases.Comment: 30 pages, 20 figure

    Multi-objective LQR with Optimum Weight Selection to Design FOPID Controllers for Delayed Fractional Order Processes

The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record.An optimal trade-off design for fractional order (FO)-PID controller is proposed in this paper with a Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) based technique using two conflicting time domain control objectives. The deviation of the state trajectories and control signal are automatically enforced by the LQR. A class of delayed FO systems with single non-integer order element has been controlled here which exhibit both sluggish and oscillatory open loop responses. The FO time delay processes are controlled within a multi-objective optimization (MOO) formulation of LQR based FOPID design. The time delays in the FO models are handled by two analytical formulations of designing optimal quadratic regulator for delayed systems. A comparison is made between the two approaches of LQR design for the stabilization of time-delay systems in the context of FOPID controller tuning. The MOO control design methodology yields the Pareto optimal trade-off solutions between the tracking performance for unit set-point change and total variation (TV) of the control signal. Numerical simulations are provided to compare the merits of the two delay handling techniques in the multi-objective LQR-FOPID design, while also showing the capability of load disturbance suppression using these optimal controllers. Tuning rules are then formed for the optimal LQR-FOPID controller knobs, using the median of the non-dominated Pareto solution to handle delays FO processes

    Several papers reviewing fractional order calculus in control applications have been published recently. These papers focus on general tuning procedures, especially for the fractional order proportional integral derivative controller. However, not all these tuning procedures are applicable to all kinds of processes, such as the delicate time delay systems. This motivates the need for synthesizing fractional order control applications, problems, and advances completely dedicated to time delay processes. The purpose of this paper is to provide a state of the art that can be easily used as a basis to familiarize oneself with fractional order tuning strategies targeted for time delayed processes.     Fractional Order Fuzzy Control of Nuclear Reactor Power with Thermal-Hydraulic Effects in the Presence of Random Network Induced Delay and Sensor Noise having Long Range Dependence

The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record.Nonlinear state space modeling of a nuclear reactor has been done for the purpose of controlling its global power in load following mode. The nonlinear state space model has been linearized at different percentage of reactor powers and a novel fractional order (FO) fuzzy proportional integral derivative (PID) controller is designed using real coded Genetic Algorithm (GA) to control the reactor power level at various operating conditions. The effectiveness of using the fuzzy FOPID controller over conventional fuzzy PID controllers has been shown with numerical simulations. The controllers tuned with the highest power models are shown to work well at other operating conditions as well; over the lowest power model based design and hence are robust with respect to the changes in nuclear reactor operating power levels. This paper also analyzes the degradation of nuclear reactor power signal due to network induced random delays in shared communication network and due to sensor noise while being fed-back to the Reactor Regulating System (RRS). The effect of long range dependence (LRD) which is a practical consideration for the stochastic processes like network induced delay and sensor noise has been tackled by optimum tuning of FO fuzzy PID controllers using GA, while also taking the operating point shift into consideration
