    Optical control plane: theory and algorithms

    In this thesis we propose a novel way to achieve global network information dissemination in which some wavelengths are reserved exclusively for global control information exchange. We study the routing and wavelength assignment problem for the special communication pattern of non-blocking all-to-all broadcast in WDM optical networks. We provide efficient solutions to reduce the number of wavelengths needed for non-blocking all-to-all broadcast, in the absence of wavelength converters, for network information dissemination. We adopt an approach in which we consider all nodes to be tap-and-continue capable thus studying lighttrees rather than lightpaths. To the best of our knowledge, this thesis is the first to consider “tap-and-continue” capable nodes in the context of conflict-free all-to-all broadcast. The problem of all to-all broadcast using individual lightpaths has been proven to be an NP-complete problem [6]. We provide optimal RWA solutions for conflict-free all-to-all broadcast for some particular cases of regular topologies, namely the ring, the torus and the hypercube. We make an important contribution on hypercube decomposition into edge-disjoint structures. We also present near-optimal polynomial-time solutions for the general case of arbitrary topologies. Furthermore, we apply for the first time the “cactus” representation of all minimum edge-cuts of graphs with arbitrary topologies to the problem of all-to-all broadcast in optical networks. Using this representation recursively we obtain near-optimal results for the number of wavelengths needed by the non-blocking all-to-all broadcast. The second part of this thesis focuses on the more practical case of multi-hop RWA for non- blocking all-to-all broadcast in the presence of Optical-Electrical-Optical conversion. We propose two simple but efficient multi-hop RWA models. In addition to reducing the number of wavelengths we also concentrate on reducing the number of optical receivers, another important optical resource. We analyze these models on the ring and the hypercube, as special cases of regular topologies. Lastly, we develop a good upper-bound on the number of wavelengths in the case of non-blocking multi-hop all-to-all broadcast on networks with arbitrary topologies and offer a heuristic algorithm to achieve it. We propose a novel network partitioning method based on “virtual perfect matching” for use in the RWA heuristic algorithm

    Investigation of the robustness of star graph networks

    The star interconnection network has been known as an attractive alternative to n-cube for interconnecting a large number of processors. It possesses many nice properties, such as vertex/edge symmetry, recursiveness, sublogarithmic degree and diameter, and maximal fault tolerance, which are all desirable when building an interconnection topology for a parallel and distributed system. Investigation of the robustness of the star network architecture is essential since the star network has the potential of use in critical applications. In this study, three different reliability measures are proposed to investigate the robustness of the star network. First, a constrained two-terminal reliability measure referred to as Distance Reliability (DR) between the source node u and the destination node I with the shortest distance, in an n-dimensional star network, Sn, is introduced to assess the robustness of the star network. A combinatorial analysis on DR especially for u having a single cycle is performed under different failure models (node, link, combined node/link failure). Lower bounds on the special case of the DR: antipode reliability, are derived, compared with n-cube, and shown to be more fault-tolerant than n-cube. The degradation of a container in a Sn having at least one operational optimal path between u and I is also examined to measure the system effectiveness in the presence of failures under different failure models. The values of MTTF to each transition state are calculated and compared with similar size containers in n-cube. Meanwhile, an upper bound under the probability fault model and an approximation under the fixed partitioning approach on the ( n-1)-star reliability are derived, and proved to be similarly accurate and close to the simulations results. Conservative comparisons between similar size star networks and n-cubes show that the star network is more robust than n-cube in terms of ( n-1)-network reliability

    I/O embedding and broadcasting in star interconnection networks

    The issues of communication between a host or central controller and processors, in large interconnection networks are very important and have been studied in the past by several researchers. There is a plethora of problems that arise when processors are asked to exchange information on parallel computers on which processors are interconnected according to a specific topology. In robust networks, it is desirable at times to send (receive) data/control information to (from) all the processors in minimal time. This type of communication is commonly referred to as broadcasting. To speed up broadcasting in a given network without modifying its topology, certain processors called stations can be specified to act as relay agents. In this thesis, broadcasting issues in a star-based interconnection network are studied. The model adopted assumes all-port communication and wormhole switching mechanism. Initially, the problem treated is one of finding the minimum number of stations required to cover all the nodes in the star graph with i-adjacency. We consider 1-, 2-, and 3-adjacencies and determine the upper bound on the number of stations required to cover the nodes for each case. After deriving the number of stations, two algorithms are designed to broadcast the messages first from the host to stations, and then from stations to remaining nodes; In addition, a Binary-based Algorithm is designed to allow routing in the network by directly working on the binary labels assigned to the star graph. No look-up table is consulted during routing and minimum number of bits are used to represent a node label. At the end, the thesis sheds light on another algorithm for routing using parallel paths in the star network

    Processor allocation strategies for modified hypercubes

    Parallel processing has been widely accepted to be the future in high speed computing. Among the various parallel architectures proposed/implemented, the hypercube has shown a lot of promise because of its poweful properties, like regular topology, fault tolerance, low diameter, simple routing, and ability to efficiently emulate other architectures. The major drawback of the hypercube network is that it can not be expanded in practice because the number of communication ports for each processor grows as the logarithm of the total number of processors in the system. Therefore, once a hypercube supercomputer of a certain dimensionality has been built, any future expansions can be accomplished only by replacing the VLSI chips. This is an undesirable feature and a lot of work has been under progress to eliminate this stymie, thus providing a platform for easier expansion. Modified hypercubes (MHs) have been proposed as the building blocks of hypercube-based systems supporting incremental growth techniques without introducing extra resources for individual hypercubes. However, processor allocation on MHs proves to be a challenge due to a slight deviation in their topology from that of the standard hypercube network. This thesis addresses the issue of processor allocation on MHs and proposes various strategies which are based, partially or entirely, on table look-up approaches. A study of the various task allocation strategies for standard hypercubes is conducted and their suitability for MHs is evaluated. It is shown that the proposed strategies have a perfect subcube recognition ability and a superior performance. Existing processor allocation strategies for pure hypercube networks are demonstrated to be ineffective for MHs, in the light of their inability to recognize all available subcubes. A comparative analysis that involves the buddy strategy and the new strategies is carried out using simulation results

    Properties and Algorithms of the (n,k)-Arrangement Graphs and Augmented Cubes

    The (n, k)-arrangement graph was first introduced in 1992 as a generalization of the star graph topology. Choosing an arrangement topology is more efficient in comparison with a star graph as we can have a closer number of nodes to what is needed. Also it has other advantages such as a lower degree and a smaller diameter, depending on k. In this thesis we investigate the problem of finding k(n − k) disjoint paths from a source node to k(n−k) target nodes in an (n, k)-arrangement interconnection network such that no path has length more than diameter+(n−k)+2, where diameter is the maximum length of shortest path between any two nodes in the graph. These disjoint paths are built by routing to all neighbors of the source node and fixing specific elements in each of the k positions of the node representation in an (n, k)-arrangement graph. Moreover, a simple routing is presented for finding n disjoint paths between two nodes which are located in different sub-graphs. The lengths are no more than d(t, s) + 4, for d(t, s) being the shortest path length between two nodes s and t. This routing algorithm needs O(n^2) time to find all n these paths. In addition to arrangement graphs, we also study augmented cubes, first introduced in 2002, a desirable variation of the hypercube. An augmented cube of dimension n has a higher degree and a lower diameter in comparison with the hypercube. We introduce an O(n^3) algorithm for finding disjoint shortest paths from a single source node to 2n − 1 different target nodes

    A Lower Bound Technique for Communication in BSP

    Communication is a major factor determining the performance of algorithms on current computing systems; it is therefore valuable to provide tight lower bounds on the communication complexity of computations. This paper presents a lower bound technique for the communication complexity in the bulk-synchronous parallel (BSP) model of a given class of DAG computations. The derived bound is expressed in terms of the switching potential of a DAG, that is, the number of permutations that the DAG can realize when viewed as a switching network. The proposed technique yields tight lower bounds for the fast Fourier transform (FFT), and for any sorting and permutation network. A stronger bound is also derived for the periodic balanced sorting network, by applying this technique to suitable subnetworks. Finally, we demonstrate that the switching potential captures communication requirements even in computational models different from BSP, such as the I/O model and the LPRAM

    CLEX: Yet Another Supercomputer Architecture?

    We propose the CLEX supercomputer topology and routing scheme. We prove that CLEX can utilize a constant fraction of the total bandwidth for point-to-point communication, at delays proportional to the sum of the number of intermediate hops and the maximum physical distance between any two nodes. Moreover, % applying an asymmetric bandwidth assignment to the links, all-to-all communication can be realized (1+o(1))(1+o(1))-optimally both with regard to bandwidth and delays. This is achieved at node degrees of nΔn^{\varepsilon}, for an arbitrary small constant Δ∈(0,1]\varepsilon\in (0,1]. In contrast, these results are impossible in any network featuring constant or polylogarithmic node degrees. Through simulation, we assess the benefits of an implementation of the proposed communication strategy. Our results indicate that, for a million processors, CLEX can increase bandwidth utilization and reduce average routing path length by at least factors 1010 respectively 55 in comparison to a torus network. Furthermore, the CLEX communication scheme features several other properties, such as deadlock-freedom, inherent fault-tolerance, and canonical partition into smaller subsystems
