    Simulation of real-time systems with clock calculus

    International audienceSafety–critical real-time systems need to be modeled and simulated early in the development of lifecycle. SIGNAL is a data-flow synchronous language with clocks widely used in modeling of such systems. Due to the synchronous features of SIGNAL, clock calculus is essential in compilation and simulation. This paper proposes a new methodology for clock calculus that takes data dependencies into consideration. In this way, simulation code can be directly generated by using a depth-first traversal algorithm. In addition, a clock insertion method based on clock-implication checking is presented to obtain an optimized control structure

    Representation of synchronous, asynchronous, and polychronous components by clocked guarded actions

    International audienceFor the design of embedded systems, many languages are in use, which are based on different models of computation such as event-, data-, and clock-driven paradigms as well as paradigms without a clear notion of time. Systems composed of such heterogeneous components are hard to analyze so that mainly co-simulation by coupling different simulators has been considered so-far. In this article, we propose clocked guarded actions as a unique intermediate representation that can be used as a common basis for simulation, analysis, and synthesis. We show how synchronous, (untimed) asynchronous, and polychronous languages can be translated to clocked guarded actions to demonstrate that our intermediate representation is powerful enough to capture rather different models of computation. Having a unique and composable intermediate representation of these components at hand allows one a simple composition of these components. Moreover, we show how clocked guarded actions can be used for verification by symbolic model checking and simulation by SystemC

    Improved False Causal Loop Detection in Polychronous Specificationof Embedded Software

    As opposed to single clocked synchronous programming paradigms, polychronous formalism allows specification of concurrent data flow computation on signals such that various data flows can evolve asynchronous with respect to each other. Explicit constraints and constraints implied by the syntactic structures impart certain intrinsic properties to models specified polychronously. One of the major steps in designing a synthesis engine for polychronous specifications is the characterization of specified models into categories such as inherently sequential or inherently multi-threaded. In this paper, we are concerned with sequentially implementable polychronous specification where computation is divided into a totally ordered sequence of logical instants. Data flow computation within an instant happens based on the implied data flow order. This order or data dependency often varies from one instant to another. Thus determining if there is an instant at which the data flow order forms a causal cycle is an important problem. In the current polychronous compilers, such as SIGNAL compiler and EmCodeSyn, this is solved without due effort, by rejecting any program which has a buffer-free structural cycle. However, a clocked dependency graph can be used to construct logical constraints representing the instants with a possible causal loop. The satisfiability of such constraints would imply that such a loop is realizable and hence the specification has a possible deadlock. The reachability of this instant with a given set of initial conditions would verify if the program should be rejected. In the past, the work on such constraints and their satisfiability has not been implemented even though for pure Boolean signals and clocks this could have been done using a satisfiability solver. With the advent to SAT modulo theory (SMT) solvers, this can now be extended to a more general class of specifications. Moreover, model checking on an abstraction of the specification can provide more information about the reachability of instants at which cyclic data dependency is realized. This paper presents an improved polychronous synthesis tool accepting a much larger class of specifications than could be done before. In our experimental results, we demonstrate the capabilities of our causality analysis methods and show that our synthesis tool performs better than previous strategies, including our own past work

    A methodology for hardware-software codesign

The integration of special purpose hardware into applications running in software is difficult for a number of reasons. Some of the difficulty is due to the difference between the models used to program hardware and software, but great effort is also required to coordinate the simultaneous execution of the application running on the microprocessor with the accelerated kernel(s) running in hardware. To further compound the problem, current design methodologies for embedded applications require an early determination of the design partitioning which allows hardware and software to be developed simultaneously, each adhering to a rigid interface contract. This approach is problematic because often a good hardware-software decomposition is not known until deep into the design process. Fixed interfaces and the burden of reimplementation prevent the migration of functionality motivated by repartitioning. This thesis presents a two-part solution to the integration of special purpose hardware into applications running in software. The first part addresses the problem of generating infrastructure for hardware-accelerated applications. We present a methodology in which the application is represented as a dataflow graph and the computation at each node is specified for execution either in software or as specialized hardware using the programmer's language of choice. An interface compiler as been implemented which takes as input the FIFO edges of the graph and generates code to connect all the different parts of the program, including those which communicate across the hardware/software boundary. This methodology, which we demonstrate on an FPGA platform, enables programmers to effectively exploit hardware acceleration without ever leaving the application space. The second part of this thesis presents an implementation of the Bluespec Codesign Language (BCL) to address the difficulty of experimenting with hardware/software partitioning alternatives. Based on guarded atomic actions, BCL can be used to specify both hardware and low-level software. Based on Bluespec SystemVerilog (BSV) for which a hardware compiler by Bluespec Inc. is commercially available, BCL has been augmented with extensions to support more efficient software generation. In BCL, the programmer specifies the entire design, including the partitioning, allowing the compiler to synthesize efficient software and hardware, along with transactors for communication between the partitions. The benefit of using a single language to express the entire design is that a programmer can easily experiment with many different hardware/software decompositions without needing to re-write the application code.     High level design and control of adaptive multiprocessor system-on-chips

    The design of modern embedded systems is getting more and more complex, as more func- tionality is integrated into these systems. At the same time, in order to meet the compu- tational requirements while keeping a low level power consumption, MPSoCs have emerged as the main solutions for such embedded systems. Furthermore, embedded systems are be- coming more and more adaptive, as the adaptivity can bring a number of benefits, such as software flexibility and energy efficiency. This thesis targets the safe design of such adaptive MPSoCs. First, each system configuration must be analyzed concerning its functional and non- functional properties. We present an abstract design and analysis framework, which allows for faster and cost-effective implementation decisions. This framework is intended as an intermediate reasoning support for system level software/hardware co-design environments. It can prune the design space at its largest, and identify candidate design solutions in a fast and efficient way. In the framework, we use an abstract clock-based encoding to model system behaviors. Different mapping and scheduling scenarios of applications on MPSoCs are analyzed via clock traces representing system simulations. Among properties of interest are functional behavioral correctness, temporal performance and energy consumption. Second, the reconfiguration management of adaptive MPSoCs must be addressed. We are specially interested in MPSoCs implemented on reconfigurable hardware architectures (i.e., FPGA fabrics), which provide a good flexibility and computational efficiency for adap- tive MPSoCs. We propose a general design framework based on the discrete controller syn- thesis (DCS) technique to address this issue. The main advantage of this technique is that it allows the automatic controller synthesis w.r.t. a given specification of control objectives. In the framework, the system reconfiguration behavior is modeled in terms of synchronous parallel automata. The reconfiguration management computation problem w.r.t. multiple objectives regarding e.g., resource usages, performance and power consumption is encoded as a DCS problem. The existing BZR programming language and Sigali tool are employed to perform DCS and generate a controller that satisfies the system requirements. Finally, we investigate two different ways of combining the two proposed design frame- works for adaptive MPSoCs. Firstly, they are combined to construct a complete design flow for adaptive MPSoCs. Secondly, they are combined to present how the designed run-time manager by the second framework can be integrated into the first framework so that high level simulations can be performed to assess the run-time manager.La conception de systèmes embarqués modernes est de plus en plus complexe, car plus de fonctionnalités sont intégrées dans ces systèmes. En même temps, afin de répondre aux exigences de calcul tout en conservant une consommation d'énergie de faible niveau, MPSoCs sont apparus comme les principales solutions pour tels systèmes embarqués. En outre, les systèmes embarqués sont de plus en plus adaptatifs, comme l’adaptabilité peut apporter un certain nombre d'avantages, tels que la flexibilité du logiciel et l'efficacité énergétique. Cette thèse vise la conception sécuritaire de ces MPSoCs adaptatifs. Tout d'abord, chaque configuration de système doit être analysée en ce qui concerne ses propriétés fonctionnelles et non fonctionnelles. Nous présentons un cadre abstraite de conception et d’analyse qui permet des décisions d’implémentation plus rapide et plus rentable. Ce cadre est conçu comme un support de raisonnement intermédiaire pour les environnements de co-conception de logiciel / matériel au niveau de système. Il peut élaguer l'espace de conception à sa plus grande portée, et identifier les candidats de solutions de conception de manière rapide et efficace. Dans ce cadre, nous utilisons un codage basé sur l’horloge abstrait pour modéliser les comportements du système. Différents scénarios d'applications de mapping et de planification sur MPSoCs sont analysés via les traces d'horloge qui représentent les simulations du système. Les propriétés d'intérêt sont l’exactitude du comportement fonctionnel, la performance temporelle et la consommation d'énergie. Deuxièmement, la gestion de la reconfiguration de MPSoCs adaptatifs doit être abordée. Nous sommes particulièrement intéressés par les MPSoCs implémentés sur des architectures reconfigurables de hardware (ex. FPGA tissus) qui offrent une bonne flexibilité et une efficacité de calcul pour les MPSoCs adaptatifs. Nous proposons un cadre général de conception basésur la technique de la synthèse de contrôleurs discrets (SCD) pour résoudre ce problème. L’avantage principal de cette technique est qu'elle permet une synthèse d'un contrôleur automatique vis-à-vis d’une spécification donnée des objectifs de contrôle. Dans ce cadre, le comportement de reconfiguration du système est modélisé en termes d'automates synchrones en parallèle. Le problème de calcul de la gestion reconfiguration vis-à-vis de multiples objectifs concernant, par exemple, les usages des ressources, la performance et la consommation d’énergie est codé comme un problème de SCD . Le langage de programmation BZR existant et l’outil Sigali sont employés pour effectuer SCD et générer un contrôleur qui satisfait aux exigences du système. Finalement, nous étudions deux façons différentes de combiner les deux cadres de conception proposées pour MPSoCs adaptatifs. Tout d'abord, ils sont combinés pour construire un flot de conception complet pour MPSoCs adaptatifs. Deuxièmement, ils sont combinés pour présenter la façon dont le gestionnaire d'exécution conçu dans le second cadre peut être intégré dans le premier cadre de sorte que les simulations de haut niveau peuvent être effectuées pour évaluer le gestionnaire d'exécution

    I introduce and advocate for the concept of Real-Time Systems Compilation. By analogy with classical compilation, real-time systems compilation consists in the fully automatic construction of running, correct-by-construction implementations from functional and non-functional specifications of embedded control systems. Like in a classical compiler, the whole process must be fast (thus enabling a trial-and-error design style) and produce reasonably efficient code. This requires the use of fast heuristics, and the use of fine-grain platform and application models. Unlike a classical compiler, a real-time systems compiler must take into account non-functional properties of a system and ensure the respect of non-functional requirements (in addition to functional correctness). I also present Lopht, a real-time systems compiler for statically-scheduled real-time systems we built by combining techniques and concepts from real-time scheduling, compilation, and synchronous languages

Market forces encourage such systems to be developed with dierent hardware-software decompositions to meet dierent points on the price-performance-power curve. Current design methodologies make the exploration of dierent hardware-software decompositions difficult because such exploration is both expensive and introduces signicant delays in time-to-market. This thesis addresses this problem by introducing, Bluespec Codesign Language (BCL), a united language model based on guarded atomic actions for hardware-software codesign. The model provides an easy way of specifying which parts of the design should be implemented in hardware and which in software without obscuring important design decisions. In addition to describing BCL's operational semantics, we formalize the equivalence of BCL programs and use this to mechanically verify design refinements.     The Faculty of Architecture, University of Belgrade and the Society for Aesthetics of Architecture and Visual Arts of Serbia (DEAVUS) are proud to be able to organize the 21st ICA Congress on “Possible Worlds of Contemporary Aesthetics: Aesthetics Between History, Geography and Media”. We are proud to announce that we received over 500 submissions from 56 countries, which makes this Congress the greatest gathering of aestheticians in this region in the last 40 years. The ICA 2019 Belgrade aims to map out contemporary aesthetics practices in a vivid dialogue of aestheticians, philosophers, art theorists, architecture theorists, culture theorists, media theorists, artists, media entrepreneurs, architects, cultural activists and researchers in the fields of humanities and social sciences. More precisely, the goal is to map the possible worlds of contemporary aesthetics in Europe, Asia, North and South America, Africa and Australia. The idea is to show, interpret and map the unity and diverseness in aesthetic thought, expression, research, and philosophies on our shared planet. Our goal is to promote a dialogue concerning aesthetics in those parts of the world that have not been involved with the work of the International Association for Aesthetics to this day. Global dialogue, understanding and cooperation are what we aim to achieve. That said, the 21st ICA is the first Congress to highlight the aesthetic issues of marginalised regions that have not been fully involved in the work of the IAA. This will be accomplished, among others, via thematic round tables discussing contemporary aesthetics in East Africa and South America. Today, aesthetics is recognized as an important philosophical, theoretical and even scientific discipline that aims at interpreting the complexity of phenomena in our contemporary world. People rather talk about possible worlds or possible aesthetic regimes rather than a unique and consistent philosophical, scientific or theoretical discipline
