    Message Passing Clustering with Stochastic Merging Based on Kernel Functions

    In this paper, we propose a new Stochastic Message Passing Clustering (SMPC) algorithm for clustering biological data based on the Message Passing Clustering (MPC) algorithm, which we introduced in earlier work. MPC has shown its advantage when applied to describing parallel and spontaneous biological processes. SMPC, as a generalized version of MPC, extends the clustering algorithm from a deterministic process to a stochastic process, adding three major advantages. First, in deciding the merging cluster pair, the influences of all clusters are quantified by probabilities, estimated by kernel functions based on their relative distances. Second, the proposed algorithm property resolve the “tie” problem, which often occurs for integer distances as in the case of protein interaction data. Third, clustering can be undone to improve the clustering performance when the algorithm detects objects which don’t have good probabilities inside the cluster and moves them outside. The test results on colon cancer gene-expression data show that SMPC performs better than the deterministic MPC

    It cannot be denied that the developments in computer hardware and in computer algorithms strongly influence each other, with new instructions added to help with video processing, encryption, and in many other areas. At the same time, the current cap on single threaded performance and wide availability of multi-threaded processors has increased the focus on parallel algorithms. Both influences are extremely prominent in computer graphics, where the gaming and movie industries always strive for the best possible performance on the current, as well as future, hardware. In this thesis we examine the hardware-algorithm synergies in the context of ray tracing and Monte-Carlo algorithms. First, we focus on the very basic element of all such algorithms - the casting of rays through a scene, and propose a dedicated hardware unit to accelerate this common operation. Then, we examine existing and novel implementations of many Monte-Carlo rendering algorithms on massively parallel hardware, as full hardware utilization is essential for peak performance. Lastly, we present an algorithm for tackling complex interreflections of glossy materials, which is designed to utilize both powerful processing units present in almost all current computers: the Centeral Processing Unit (CPU) and the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). These three pieces combined show that it is always important to look at hardware-algorithm mapping on all levels of abstraction: instruction, processor, and machine.Zweifelsohne beeinflussen sich Computerhardware und Computeralgorithmen gegenseitig in ihrer Entwicklung: Prozessoren bekommen neue Instruktionen, um zum Beispiel Videoverarbeitung, Verschlüsselung oder andere Anwendungen zu beschleunigen. Gleichzeitig verstärkt sich der Fokus auf parallele Algorithmen, bedingt durch die limitierte Leistung von für einzelne Threads und die inzwischen breite Verfügbarkeit von multi-threaded Prozessoren. Beide Einflüsse sind im Grafikbereich besonders stark , wo es z.B. für die Spiele- und Filmindustrie wichtig ist, die bestmögliche Leistung zu erreichen, sowohl auf derzeitiger und zukünftiger Hardware. In Rahmen dieser Arbeit untersuchen wir die Synergie von Hardware und Algorithmen anhand von Ray-Tracing- und Monte-Carlo-Algorithmen. Zuerst betrachten wir einen grundlegenden Hardware-Bausteins für alle diese Algorithmen, die Strahlenverfolgung in einer Szene, und präsentieren eine spezielle Hardware-Einheit zur deren Beschleunigung. Anschließend untersuchen wir existierende und neue Implementierungen verschiedener MonteCarlo-Algorithmen auf massiv-paralleler Hardware, wobei die maximale Auslastung der Hardware im Fokus steht. Abschließend stellen wir dann einen Algorithmus zur Berechnung von komplexen Beleuchtungseffekten bei glänzenden Materialien vor, der versucht, die heute fast überall vorhandene Kombination aus Hauptprozessor (CPU) und Grafikprozessor (GPU) optimal auszunutzen. Zusammen zeigen diese drei Aspekte der Arbeit, wie wichtig es ist, Hardware und Algorithmen auf allen Ebenen gleichzeitig zu betrachten: Auf den Ebenen einzelner Instruktionen, eines Prozessors bzw. eines gesamten Systems

    Detectability of the Cross-Correlation between CMB Lensing and Stochastic GW Background from Compact Object Mergers

    The anisotropies of the Stochastic Gravitational-Wave Background (SGWB), produced by merging compact binaries, constitute a possible new probe of the Large-Scale Structure (LSS). However, the significant shot noise contribution caused by the discreteness of the GW sources and the poor angular resolution of the instruments hampers the detection of the intrinsic anisotropies induced by the LSS. In this work, we investigate the potential of cross-correlating forthcoming high precision measurements of the SGWB energy density and the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) lensing convergence to mitigate the effect of shot noise. Combining a detailed model of stellar and galactic astrophysics with a novel framework to distribute the GW emitters in the sky, we compute the auto-and cross-correlation power spectra for the two cosmic fields, evaluate the shot noise contribution and predict the signal-to-noise ratio. The results of our analysis show that the SGWB energy density correlates significantly with the CMB lensing convergence and that the cross-correlation between these two cosmic fields reduces the impact of instrumental and shot noise. Unfortunately, the S/N is not high enough to detect the intrinsic SGWB anisotropies. Nevertheless, a network composed of both present and future generation GW interferometers, operating for at least 10 yrs, should be able to measure the shot noise contribution

    Image enhancement methods and applications in computational photography

    Computational photography is currently a rapidly developing and cutting-edge topic in applied optics, image sensors and image processing fields to go beyond the limitations of traditional photography. The innovations of computational photography allow the photographer not only merely to take an image, but also, more importantly, to perform computations on the captured image data. Good examples of these innovations include high dynamic range imaging, focus stacking, super-resolution, motion deblurring and so on. Although extensive work has been done to explore image enhancement techniques in each subfield of computational photography, attention has seldom been given to study of the image enhancement technique of simultaneously extending depth of field and dynamic range of a scene. In my dissertation, I present an algorithm which combines focus stacking and high dynamic range (HDR) imaging in order to produce an image with both extended depth of field (DOF) and dynamic range than any of the input images. In this dissertation, I also investigate super-resolution image restoration from multiple images, which are possibly degraded by large motion blur. The proposed algorithm combines the super-resolution problem and blind image deblurring problem in a unified framework. The blur kernel for each input image is separately estimated. I also do not make any restrictions on the motion fields among images; that is, I estimate dense motion field without simplifications such as parametric motion. While the proposed super-resolution method uses multiple images to enhance spatial resolution from multiple regular images, single image super-resolution is related to techniques of denoising or removing blur from one single captured image. In my dissertation, space-varying point spread function (PSF) estimation and image deblurring for single image is also investigated. Regarding the PSF estimation, I do not make any restrictions on the type of blur or how the blur varies spatially. Once the space-varying PSF is estimated, space-varying image deblurring is performed, which produces good results even for regions where it is not clear what the correct PSF is at first. I also bring image enhancement applications to both personal computer (PC) and Android platform as computational photography applications

    Recent Progress in Image Deblurring

    This paper comprehensively reviews the recent development of image deblurring, including non-blind/blind, spatially invariant/variant deblurring techniques. Indeed, these techniques share the same objective of inferring a latent sharp image from one or several corresponding blurry images, while the blind deblurring techniques are also required to derive an accurate blur kernel. Considering the critical role of image restoration in modern imaging systems to provide high-quality images under complex environments such as motion, undesirable lighting conditions, and imperfect system components, image deblurring has attracted growing attention in recent years. From the viewpoint of how to handle the ill-posedness which is a crucial issue in deblurring tasks, existing methods can be grouped into five categories: Bayesian inference framework, variational methods, sparse representation-based methods, homography-based modeling, and region-based methods. In spite of achieving a certain level of development, image deblurring, especially the blind case, is limited in its success by complex application conditions which make the blur kernel hard to obtain and be spatially variant. We provide a holistic understanding and deep insight into image deblurring in this review. An analysis of the empirical evidence for representative methods, practical issues, as well as a discussion of promising future directions are also presented.Comment: 53 pages, 17 figure
