    LSTM-Attention-Embedding Model-Based Day-Ahead Prediction of Photovoltaic Power Output Using Bayesian Optimization

    Photovoltaic (PV) output is susceptible to meteorological factors, resulting in intermittency and randomness of power generation. Accurate prediction of PV power output can not only reduce the impact of PV power generation on the grid but also provide a reference for grid dispatching. Therefore, this paper proposes an LSTM-attention-embedding model based on Bayesian optimization to predict the day-ahead PV power output. The statistical features at multiple time scales, combined features, time features and wind speed categorical features are explored for PV related meteorological factors. A deep learning model is constructed based on an LSTM block and an embedding block with the connection of a merge layer. The LSTM block is used to memorize and attend the historical information, and the embedding block is used to encode the categorical features. Then, an output block is used to output the prediction results, and a residual connection is also included in the model to mitigate the gradient transfer. Bayesian optimization is used to select the optimal combined features. The effectiveness of the proposed model is verified on two actual PV power plants in one area of China. The comparative experimental results show that the performance of the proposed model has been significantly improved compared to LSTM neural networks, BPNN, SVR model and persistence model

In this project we focus on big data transmission in the context of weather data. Weather data is important for meteorologist as it helps them to make weather prediction. Real time weather prediction is really important as it would help in making quick decision to react with the environment and planning for our daily activities. The purpose of this project is to develop a real time and low bandwidth usage for weather data transmission driven by an artificial neural network perform weather forecast using Adaptive Forecasting Model. This project seeks an application context offshore because the data transmission from offshore to onshore is very costly and requires high usage of network bandwidth. Other than that, offshore weather can change rapidly and cause offshore activity to be delayed

    SMART CITY MANAGEMENT USING MACHINE LEARNING TECHNIQUES

    In response to the growing urban population, smart cities are designed to improve people\u27s quality of life by implementing cutting-edge technologies. The concept of a smart city refers to an effort to enhance a city\u27s residents\u27 economic and environmental well-being via implementing a centralized management system. With the use of sensors and actuators, smart cities can collect massive amounts of data, which can improve people\u27s quality of life and design cities\u27 services. Although smart cities contain vast amounts of data, only a percentage is used due to the noise and variety of the data sources. Information and communication technology (ICT) and the Internet of Things (IoT) play a far more prominent role in developing smart cities when it comes to making choices, designing policies, and executing different methods. Smart city applications have made great strides thanks to recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI), especially machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL). The applications of ML and DL have significantly increased the accuracy aspect of decision-making in smart cities, especially in analyzing the captured data using IoT-based devices and sensors. Smart cities employ algorithms that use unlabeled and labeled data to manage resources and deliver individualized services effectively. It has instantaneous practical use in many crucial areas, including smart health, smart environment, smart transportation system, energy management, and smart water distribution system in a smart city. Hence, ML and DL have become hot research topics in AI techniques in recent years and are proving to be accurate optimization techniques in smart cities. In addition, artificial intelligence algorithms enable the processing massive datasets and identify patterns and characteristics that would otherwise go unnoticed. Despite these advantages, researchers\u27 skepticism of AI\u27s sometimes mysterious inner workings has prevented it from being widely used for smart cities. This thesis\u27s primary intent is to explore the value of employing diverse AI and ML techniques in developing smart city-centric domains and investigate the efficacy of these proposed approaches in four different aspects of the smart city such as smart energy, smart transportation system, smart water distribution system and smart environment. In addition, we use these machine learning approaches to make a data analytics and visualization unit module for the smart city testbed.     During the last few years, information technology and transportation industries, along with automotive manufacturers and academia, are focusing on leveraging intelligent transportation systems (ITS) to improve services related to driver experience, connected cars, Internet data plans for vehicles, traffic infrastructure, urban transportation systems, traffic collaborative management, road traffic accidents analysis, road traffic flow prediction, public transportation service plan, personal travel route plans, and the development of an effective ecosystem for vehicles, drivers, traffic controllers, city planners, and transportation applications. Moreover, the emerging technologies of the Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing have provided unprecedented opportunities for the development and realization of innovative intelligent transportation systems where sensors and mobile devices can gather information and cloud computing, allowing knowledge discovery, information sharing, and supported decision making. However, the development of such data-driven ITS requires the integration, processing, and analysis of plentiful information obtained from millions of vehicles, traffic infrastructures, smartphones, and other collaborative systems like weather stations and road safety and early warning systems.     FLIGHT RISK MANAGEMENT AND CREW RESERVE OPTIMIZATION

    There are two key concerns in the development process of aviation. One is safety, and the other is cost. An airline running with high safety and low cost must be the most competitive one in the market. This work investigates two research efforts respectively relevant to these two concerns. When building support of a real time Flight Risk Assessment and Mitigation System (FRAMS), a sequential multi-stage approach is developed. The whole risk management process is considered in order to improve the safety of each flight by integrating AHP and FTA technique to describe the framework of all levels of risks through risk score. Unlike traditional fault tree analysis, severity level, time level and synergy effect are taken into account when calculating the risk score for each flight. A risk tree is designed for risk data with flat shape structure and a time sensitive optimization model is developed to support decision making of how to mitigate risk with as little cost as possible. A case study is solved in reasonable time to approve that the model is practical for the real time system. On the other hand, an intense competitive environment makes cost controlling more and more important for airlines. An integrated approach is developed for improving the efficiency of reserve crew scheduling which can contribute to decrease cost. Unlike the other technique, this approach integrates the demand forecasting, reserve pattern generation and optimization. A reserve forecasting tool is developed based on a large data base. The expected value of each type of dropped trip is the output of this tool based on the predicted dropping rate and the total scheduled trips. The rounding step in current applied methods is avoided to keep as much information as possible. The forecasting stage is extended to the optimization stage through the input of these expected values. A novel optimization model with column generation algorithm is developed to generate patterns to cover these expected level reserve demands with minimization to the total cost. The many-to-many covering mode makes the model avoid the influence of forecasting errors caused by high uncertainty as much as possible

    Enhanced Power System Operational Performance with Anticipatory Control under Increased Penetration of Wind Energy

    abstract: As the world embraces a sustainable energy future, alternative energy resources, such as wind power, are increasingly being seen as an integral part of the future electric energy grid. Ultimately, integrating such a dynamic and variable mix of generation requires a better understanding of renewable generation output, in addition to power grid systems that improve power system operational performance in the presence of anticipated events such as wind power ramps. Because of the stochastic, uncontrollable nature of renewable resources, a thorough and accurate characterization of wind activity is necessary to maintain grid stability and reliability. Wind power ramps from an existing wind farm are studied to characterize persistence forecasting errors using extreme value analysis techniques. In addition, a novel metric that quantifies the amount of non-stationarity in time series wind power data was proposed and used in a real-time algorithm to provide a rigorous method that adaptively determines training data for forecasts. Lastly, large swings in generation or load can cause system frequency and tie-line flows to deviate from nominal, so an anticipatory MPC-based secondary control scheme was designed and integrated into an automatic generation control loop to improve the ability of an interconnection to respond to anticipated large events and fluctuations in the power system.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Electrical Engineering 201
