Solving scheduling problems with integrated online sustainability observation using heuristic optimization
The paper deals with the issue of production scheduling for various types of employees in a large manufacturing company where the decision-making process was based on a human factor and the foremanâs know-how, which was error-prone. Modern production processes are getting more and more complex. A company that wants to be competitive on the market must consider many factors. Relying only on human factors is not efficient at all. The presented work has the objective of developing a new employee scheduling system that might be considered a particular case of the job shop problem from the set of the employee scheduling problems. The Neuro-Tabu Search algorithm and the data gathered by manufacturing sensors and process controls are used to remotely inspect machine condition and sustainability as well as for preventive maintenance. They were used to build production schedules. The construction of the Neuro-Tabu Search algorithm combines the Tabu Search algorithm, one of the most effective methods of constructing heuristic algorithms for scheduling problems, and a self-organizing neural network that further improves the prohibition mechanism of the Tabu Search algorithm. Additionally, in the paper, sustainability with the use of Industry 4.0 is considered. That would make it possible to minimize the costs of employeesâ work and the cost of the overall production process. Solving the optimization problem offered by Neuro-Tabu Search algorithm and real-time data shows a new way of production management
Evolving Neural Networks to Solve a Two-Stage Hybrid Flow Shop Scheduling Problem with Family Setup Times
We present a novel strategy to solve a two-stage hybrid flow shop scheduling problem with family setup times. The problem is derived from an industrial case. Our strategy involves the application of NeuroEvolution of Augmenting Topologies - a genetic algorithm, which generates arbitrary neural networks being able to estimate job sequences. The algorithm is coupled with a discrete-event simulation model, which evaluates different network configurations and provides training signals. We compare the performance and computational efficiency of the proposed concept with other solution approaches. Our investigations indicate that NeuroEvolution of Augmenting Topologies can possibly compete with state-of-the-art approaches in terms of solution quality and outperform them in terms of computational efficiency
Approximate Methods For Solving Flowshop Problems
The flow shop scheduling problem is a classical combinatorial problem being studied for years. The focus of this research is to study two variants of the flow shop scheduling problem in order to minimize makespan by scheduling n jobs on m machines. A solution approach is developed for the modified flow shop problem with due dates and release times. This algorithm is an attempt to contribute to the limited literature for the problem. Another tabu search-based solution approach is developed to solve the classical flow shop scheduling problem. This meta-heuristic (called 3XTS) allows an efficient search of the neighboring solutions leading to a fast solution procedure. Several control parameters affecting the quality of the algorithm are experimentally tested, and certain rules are established for different problem instances. The 3XTS is compared to another tabu search method (that seems to be a champion) in terms of solution quality and computation time

An intelligent manufacturing system for heat treatment scheduling
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University. This research is focused on the integration problem of process planning and scheduling in steel heat treatment operations environment using artificial intelligent techniques that are capable of dealing with such problems.
This work addresses the issues involved in developing a suitable methodology for scheduling heat treatment operations of steel. Several intelligent algorithms have been developed for these propose namely, Genetic Algorithm (GA), Sexual Genetic Algorithm (SGA), Genetic Algorithm with Chromosome differentiation (GACD), Age Genetic Algorithm (AGA), and Mimetic Genetic Algorithm (MGA). These algorithms have been employed to develop an efficient intelligent algorithm using Algorithm Portfolio methodology. After that all the algorithms have been tested on two types of scheduling benchmarks.
To apply these algorithms on heat treatment scheduling, a furnace model is developed for optimisation proposes. Furthermore, a system that is capable of selecting the optimal heat treatment regime is developed so the required metal properties can be achieved with the least energy consumption and the shortest time using Neuro-Fuzzy (NF) and Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) methodologies. Based on this system, PSO is used to optimise the heat treatment process by selecting different heat treatment conditions. The selected conditions are evaluated so the best selection can be identified. This work addresses the issues involved in developing a suitable methodology for developing an NF system and PSO for mechanical properties of the steel.
Using the optimisers, furnace model and heat treatment system model, the intelligent system model is developed and implemented successfully. The results of this system were exciting and the optimisers were working correctly
A new vision of approximate methods for the permutation flowshop to minimise makespan: State-of-the-art and computational evaluation
[EN] The permutation flowshop problem is a classic machine scheduling problem where n jobs must be processed on a set of m machines disposed in series and where each job must visit all machines in the same order. Many production scheduling problems resemble flowshops and hence it has generated much interest and had a big impact in the field, resulting in literally hundreds of heuristic and metaheuristic methods over the last 60 years. However, most methods proposed for makespan minimisation are not properly compared with existing procedures so currently it is not possible to know which are the most efficient methods for the problem regarding the quality of the solutions obtained and the computational effort required. In this paper, we identify and exhaustively compare the best existing heuristics and metaheuristics so the state-of-the-art regarding approximate procedures for this relevant problem is established. Application of an Efficient Genetic Algorithm for Solving nĂm Flow Shop Scheduling Problem Comparing it with Branch and Bound Algorithm and Tabu Search Algorithm
Emergence of advance manufacturing systems such as CAD/CAM, FMS and CIM etc. has increased the importance of the flow shop scheduling. Flow shop scheduling problem is considered NP-hard for m machines and n jobs. In this paper, we develop an efficient genetic algorithm (EGA) for solving n flow shop scheduling problem with makespan as the criterion. The objective of this proposed EGA is to obtain a sequence of jobs and the minimization of the total completion time and waiting time. For finding optimal solution, this EGA is very effective. In large scale problems, the result of the proposed algorithm shows that the efficient genetic algorithm gives high performance comparing with Branch and Bound algorithm and Tabu search algorithm
