A bi-level programming approach for trip matrix estimation and traffic control problems with stochastic user equilibrium link flows
This paper deals with two mathematically similar problems in transport network analysis: trip matrix estimation and traffic signal optimisation on congested road networks. These two problems are formulated as bi-level programming problems with stochastic user equilibrium assignment as the second-level programming problem. We differentiate two types of solutions in the combined matrix estimation and stochastic user equilibrium assignment problem (or, the combined signal optimisation and stochastic user equilibrium assignment problem): one is the solution to the bi-level programming problem and the other the mutually consistent solution where the two sub-problems in the combined problem are solved simultaneously. In this paper, we shall concentrate on the bi-level programming approach although we shall also consider mutually consistent solutions so as to contrast the two types of solutions. The purpose of the paper is to present a solution algorithm for the two bi-level programming problems and to test the algorithm on several networks
The dynamics of iterated transportation simulations
Iterating between a router and a traffic micro-simulation is an increasibly
accepted method for doing traffic assignment. This paper, after pointing out
that the analytical theory of simulation-based assignment to-date is
insufficient for some practical cases, presents results of simulation studies
from a real world study. Specifically, we look into the issues of uniqueness,
variability, and robustness and validation. Regarding uniqueness, despite some
cautionary notes from a theoretical point of view, we find no indication of
``meta-stable'' states for the iterations. Variability however is considerable.
By variability we mean the variation of the simulation of a given plan set by
just changing the random seed. We show then results from three different
micro-simulations under the same iteration scenario in order to test for the
robustness of the results under different implementations. We find the results
encouraging, also when comparing to reality and with a traditional assignment
result.

NoCo: ILP-based worst-case contention estimation for mesh real-time manycores
Manycores are capable of providing the computational demands required by functionally-advanced critical applications in domains such as automotive and avionics. In manycores a network-on-chip (NoC) provides access to shared caches and memories and hence concentrates most of the contention that tasks suffer, with effects on the worst-case contention delay (WCD) of packets and tasks' WCET. While several proposals minimize the impact of individual NoC parameters on WCD, e.g. mapping and routing, there are strong dependences among these NoC parameters. Hence, finding the optimal NoC configurations requires optimizing all parameters simultaneously, which represents a multidimensional optimization problem. In this paper we propose NoCo, a novel approach that combines ILP and stochastic optimization to find NoC configurations in terms of packet routing, application mapping, and arbitration weight allocation.
