Inferring transportation modes from GPS trajectories using a convolutional neural network
Identifying the distribution of users' transportation modes is an essential
part of travel demand analysis and transportation planning. With the advent of
ubiquitous GPS-enabled devices (e.g., a smartphone), a cost-effective approach
for inferring commuters' mobility mode(s) is to leverage their GPS
trajectories. A majority of studies have proposed mode inference models based
on hand-crafted features and traditional machine learning algorithms. However,
manual features engender some major drawbacks including vulnerability to
traffic and environmental conditions as well as possessing human's bias in
creating efficient features. One way to overcome these issues is by utilizing
Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) schemes that are capable of automatically
driving high-level features from the raw input. Accordingly, in this paper, we
take advantage of CNN architectures so as to predict travel modes based on only
raw GPS trajectories, where the modes are labeled as walk, bike, bus, driving,
and train. Our key contribution is designing the layout of the CNN's input
layer in such a way that not only is adaptable with the CNN schemes but
represents fundamental motion characteristics of a moving object including
speed, acceleration, jerk, and bearing rate. Furthermore, we ameliorate the
quality of GPS logs through several data preprocessing steps. Using the clean
input layer, a variety of CNN configurations are evaluated to achieve the best
CNN architecture. The highest accuracy of 84.8% has been achieved through the
ensemble of the best CNN configuration. In this research, we contrast our
methodology with traditional machine learning algorithms as well as the seminal

Reconfigurable hardware architecture of a shape recognition system based on specialized tiny neural networks with online training.
Neural networks are widely used in pattern recognition, security applications, and robot control. We propose a hardware architecture system using tiny neural networks (TNNs)specialized in image recognition. The generic TNN architecture allows for expandability by means of mapping several basic units(layers) and dynamic reconfiguration, depending on the application specific demands. One of the most important features of TNNs is their learning ability. Weight modification and architecture reconfiguration can be carried out at run-time. Our system performs objects identification by the interpretation of characteristics elements of their shapes. This is achieved by interconnecting several specialized TNNs. The results of several tests in different conditions are reported in this paper. The system accurately detects a test shape in most of the experiments performed. This paper also contains a detailed description of the system architecture and the processing steps. In order to validate the research, the system has been implemented and configured as a perceptron network with back-propagation learning, choosing as reference application the recognition of shapes. Simulation results show that this architecture has significant performance benefits
To develop an efficient variable speed compressor motor system
This research presents a proposed new method of improving the energy efficiency of a Variable Speed Drive (VSD) for induction motors. The principles of VSD are reviewed with emphasis on the efficiency and power losses associated with the operation of the variable speed compressor motor drive, particularly at low speed operation.The efficiency of induction motor when operated at rated speed and load torque
is high. However at low load operation, application of the induction motor at rated flux will cause the iron losses to increase excessively, hence its efficiency will reduce
dramatically. To improve this efficiency, it is essential to obtain the flux level that minimizes the total motor losses. This technique is known as an efficiency or energy
optimization control method. In practice, typical of the compressor load does not require high dynamic response, therefore improvement of the efficiency optimization
control that is proposed in this research is based on scalar control model.In this research, development of a new neural network controller for efficiency optimization control is proposed. The controller is designed to generate both voltage and frequency reference signals imultaneously. To achieve a robust controller from variation of motor parameters, a real-time or on-line learning algorithm based on a second order optimization Levenberg-Marquardt is employed. The simulation of the proposed controller for variable speed compressor is presented. The results obtained
clearly show that the efficiency at low speed is significant increased. Besides that the speed of the motor can be maintained. Furthermore, the controller is also robust to the motor parameters variation. The simulation results are also verified by experiment
Novelty and Reinforcement Learning in the Value System of Developmental Robots
The value system of a developmental robot signals the occurrence of salient sensory inputs, modulates the mapping from sensory inputs to action outputs, and evaluates candidate actions. In the work reported here, a low level value system is modeled and implemented. It simulates the non-associative animal learning mechanism known as habituation effect. Reinforcement learning is also integrated with novelty. Experimental results show that the proposed value system works as designed in a study of robot viewing angle selection
Classification algorithms on the cell processor
The rapid advancement in the capacity and reliability of data storage technology has allowed for the retention of virtually limitless quantity and detail of digital information. Massive information databases are becoming more and more widespread among governmental, educational, scientific, and commercial organizations. By segregating this data into carefully defined input (e.g.: images) and output (e.g.: classification labels) sets, a classification algorithm can be used develop an internal expert model of the data by employing a specialized training algorithm. A properly trained classifier is capable of predicting the output for future input data from the same input domain that it was trained on. Two popular classifiers are Neural Networks and Support Vector Machines. Both, as with most accurate classifiers, require massive computational resources to carry out the training step and can take months to complete when dealing with extremely large data sets. In most cases, utilizing larger training improves the final accuracy of the trained classifier. However, access to the kinds of computational resources required to do so is expensive and out of reach of private or under funded institutions. The Cell Broadband Engine (CBE), introduced by Sony, Toshiba, and IBM has recently been introduced into the market. The current most inexpensive iteration is available in the Sony Playstation 3 ® computer entertainment system. The CBE is a novel multi-core architecture which features many hardware enhancements designed to accelerate the processing of massive amounts of data. These characteristics and the cheap and widespread availability of this technology make the Cell a prime candidate for the task of training classifiers. In this work, the feasibility of the Cell processor in the use of training Neural Networks and Support Vector Machines was explored. In the Neural Network family of classifiers, the fully connected Multilayer Perceptron and Convolution Network were implemented. In the Support Vector Machine family, a Working Set technique known as the Gradient Projection-based Decomposition Technique, as well as the Cascade SVM were implemented
Learning Deployable Navigation Policies at Kilometer Scale from a Single Traversal
Model-free reinforcement learning has recently been shown to be effective at
learning navigation policies from complex image input. However, these
algorithms tend to require large amounts of interaction with the environment,
which can be prohibitively costly to obtain on robots in the real world. We
present an approach for efficiently learning goal-directed navigation policies
on a mobile robot, from only a single coverage traversal of recorded data. The
navigation agent learns an effective policy over a diverse action space in a
large heterogeneous environment consisting of more than 2km of travel, through
buildings and outdoor regions that collectively exhibit large variations in
visual appearance, self-similarity, and connectivity. We compare pretrained
visual encoders that enable precomputation of visual embeddings to achieve a
throughput of tens of thousands of transitions per second at training time on a
commodity desktop computer, allowing agents to learn from millions of
trajectories of experience in a matter of hours. We propose multiple forms of
computationally efficient stochastic augmentation to enable the learned policy
to generalise beyond these precomputed embeddings, and demonstrate successful
deployment of the learned policy on the real robot without fine tuning, despite
environmental appearance differences at test time. The dataset and code

Cause Identification of Electromagnetic Transient Events using Spatiotemporal Feature Learning
This paper presents a spatiotemporal unsupervised feature learning method for
cause identification of electromagnetic transient events (EMTE) in power grids.
The proposed method is formulated based on the availability of
time-synchronized high-frequency measurement, and using the convolutional
neural network (CNN) as the spatiotemporal feature representation along with
softmax function. Despite the existing threshold-based, or energy-based events
analysis methods, such as support vector machine (SVM), autoencoder, and
tapered multi-layer perception (t-MLP) neural network, the proposed feature
learning is carried out with respect to both time and space. The effectiveness
of the proposed feature learning and the subsequent cause identification is
validated through the EMTP simulation of different events such as line
energization, capacitor bank energization, lightning, fault, and high-impedance
fault in the IEEE 30-bus, and the real-time digital simulation (RTDS) of the
