    Unified architecture of mobile ad hoc network security (MANS) system

    In this dissertation, a unified architecture of Mobile Ad-hoc Network Security (MANS) system is proposed, under which IDS agent, authentication, recovery policy and other policies can be defined formally and explicitly, and are enforced by a uniform architecture. A new authentication model for high-value transactions in cluster-based MANET is also designed in MANS system. This model is motivated by previous works but try to use their beauties and avoid their shortcomings, by using threshold sharing of the certificate signing key within each cluster to distribute the certificate services, and using certificate chain and certificate repository to achieve better scalability, less overhead and better security performance. An Intrusion Detection System is installed in every node, which is responsible for colleting local data from its host node and neighbor nodes within its communication range, pro-processing raw data and periodically broadcasting to its neighborhood, classifying normal or abnormal based on pro-processed data from its host node and neighbor nodes. Security recovery policy in ad hoc networks is the procedure of making a global decision according to messages received from distributed IDS and restore to operational health the whole system if any user or host that conducts the inappropriate, incorrect, or anomalous activities that threaten the connectivity or reliability of the networks and the authenticity of the data traffic in the networks. Finally, quantitative risk assessment model is proposed to numerically evaluate MANS security

    The ability to discover services offered in a mobile ad hoc network is the major prerequisite for effective usability of these networks. Unfortunately, existing approaches to service trading are not well suited for these highly dynamic topologies since they either rely on centralized servers or on resource-consuming query flooding. Application layer overlays seem to be a more promising approach. However, existing solutions like the Content-Addressable Network (CAN) are especially designed for internet based peer-to-peer networks yielding structural conditions that are far too complex for ad hoc networks. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a more lightweight overlay structure: lanes. We present algorithms to correct and optimize its structure in case of topology changes and show how it enables the trading of services specified by arbitrary descriptions

    A survey of smart grid architectures, applications, benefits and standardization

    The successful transformation of conventional power grids into Smart Grids (SG) will require robust and scalable communication network infrastructure. The SGs will facilitate bidirectional electricity flow, advanced load management, a self-healing protection mechanism and advanced monitoring capabilities to make the power system more energy efficient and reliable. In this paper SG communication network architectures, standardization efforts and details of potential SG applications are identified. The future deployment of real-time or near-real-time SG applications is dependent on the introduction of a SG compatible communication system that includes a communication protocol for cross-domain traffic flows within the SG. This paper identifies the challenges within the cross-functional domains of the power and communication systems that current research aims to overcome. The status of SG related machine to machine communication system design is described and recommendations are provided for diverse new and innovative traffic features

    Distributed scheduling algorithms for LoRa-based wide area cyber-physical systems

    Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) are a class of wireless communication protocols that work over long distances, consume low power and support low datarates. LPWANs have been designed for monitoring applications, with sparse communication from nodes to servers and sparser from servers to nodes. Inspite of their initial design, LPWANs have the potential to target applications with higher and stricter requirements like those of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). Due to their long-range capabilities, LPWANs can specifically target CPS applications distributed over a wide-area, which is referred to as Wide-Area CPS (WA-CPS). Augmenting WA-CPSs with wireless communication would allow for more flexible, low-cost and easily maintainable deployment. However, wireless communications come with problems like reduced reliability and unpredictable latencies, making them harder to use for CPSs. With this intention, this thesis explores the use of LPWANs, specifically LoRa, to meet the communication and control requirements of WA-CPSs. The thesis focuses on using LoRa due to its high resilience to noise, several communication parameters to choose from and a freely modifiable communication stack and servers making it ideal for research and deployment. However, LoRaWAN suffers from low reliability due to its ALOHA channel access method. The thesis posits that "Distributed algorithms would increase the protocol's reliability allowing it to meet the requirements of WA-CPSs". Three different application scenarios are explored in this thesis that leverage unexplored aspects of LoRa to meet their requirements. The application scenarios are delay-tolerant vehicular networks, multi-stakeholder WA-CPS deployments and water distribution networks. The systems use novel algorithms to facilitate communication between the nodes and gateways to ensure a highly reliable system. The results outperform state-of-art techniques to prove that LoRa is currently under-utilised and can be used for CPS applications.Open Acces

    This document presents the full study of the DTN (Delay Tolerant Network) within IOT (Internet Of Things) context. The motivation for using generic protocols able to handle the constraints due to the IOT is highlighted with the choice of the Bundle Protocol. A study of existing implementations of this protocol is realised within a sensor context. We justify the choices made for our implementation, then we define the mechanisms which we test with the Cooja platform by following the protocol of tests we have developed. The results of the experiments are analysed.Ce document présente l’étude complète des DTN (Delay Tolerant Network) dans un contexte d’IOT (Internet Of Things). La motivation de l’utilisation de protocoles génériques capables de supporter les contraintes inhérentes au contexte IOT est mise en avant avec le choix du Bundle Protocol. Une étude des implantations existantes de ce protocole est faite dans un contexte capteur. Nous proposons notre implantation en justifiant les choix réalisés, puis nous définissons des mécanismes que nous testons avec la plate-forme Cooja en suivant le protocole de tests que nous avons élaboré. Les resultats de ces expérimentations sont analysées
