A Framework for Designing 3d Virtual Environments
The process of design and development of virtual environments can be supported by tools and frameworks, to save time in technical aspects and focusing on the content. In this paper we present an academic framework which provides several levels of abstraction to ease this work. It includes state-of-the-art components we devised or integrated adopting open-source solutions in order to face specific problems. Its architecture is modular and customizable, the code is open-source.\u

Development of Use Cases, Part I
For determining requirements and constructs appropriate for a Web query language, or in fact
any language, use cases are of essence. The W3C has published two sets of use cases for XML
and RDF query languages. In this article, solutions for these use cases are presented using
Xcerpt. a novel Web and Semantic Web query language that combines access to standard Web
data such as XML documents with access to Semantic Web metadata
such as RDF resource
descriptions with reasoning abilities and rules familiar from logicprogramming.
To the
best knowledge of the authors, this is the first in depth study of how to solve use cases for
accessing XML and RDF in a single language: Integrated access to data and metadata
has been
recognized by industry and academia as one of the key challenges in data processing for the
next decade. This article is a contribution towards addressing this challenge by demonstrating
along practical and recognized use cases the usefulness of reasoning abilities, rules, and
semistructured
query languages for accessing both data (XML) and metadata
(RDF)
DLI-2: Creating the Digital Music Library: Final Report to the National Science Foundation
Indiana University’s Variations2 Digital Music Library project focused on three chief areas of research and development: system architecture, including content representation and metadata standards; component-based application architecture; and network services. We tested and evaluated commercial technologies, primarily for multimedia and storage management; developed custom software solutions for the needs of the music library community; integrated commercial and custom software products; and tested and evaluated prototype systems for music instruction and library services, locally at Indiana University, and at a number of satellite sites, in the U.S. and overseas. CHORUS Deliverable 2.2: Second report - identification of multi-disciplinary key issues for gap analysis toward EU multimedia search engines roadmap
After addressing the state-of-the-art during the first year of Chorus and establishing the existing landscape in
multimedia search engines, we have identified and analyzed gaps within European research effort during our second year.
In this period we focused on three directions, notably technological issues, user-centred issues and use-cases and socio-
economic and legal aspects. These were assessed by two central studies: firstly, a concerted vision of functional breakdown
of generic multimedia search engine, and secondly, a representative use-cases descriptions with the related discussion on
requirement for technological challenges. Both studies have been carried out in cooperation and consultation with the
community at large through EC concertation meetings (multimedia search engines cluster), several meetings with our
Think-Tank, presentations in international conferences, and surveys addressed to EU projects coordinators as well as
National initiatives coordinators. Based on the obtained feedback we identified two types of gaps, namely core
technological gaps that involve research challenges, and “enablers”, which are not necessarily technical research
challenges, but have impact on innovation progress. New socio-economic trends are presented as well as emerging legal
challenges
Towards Building a Knowledge Base of Monetary Transactions from a News Collection
We address the problem of extracting structured representations of economic
events from a large corpus of news articles, using a combination of natural
language processing and machine learning techniques. The developed techniques
allow for semi-automatic population of a financial knowledge base, which, in
turn, may be used to support a range of data mining and exploration tasks. The
key challenge we face in this domain is that the same event is often reported
multiple times, with varying correctness of details. We address this challenge
by first collecting all information pertinent to a given event from the entire
corpus, then considering all possible representations of the event, and
finally, using a supervised learning method, to rank these representations by
the associated confidence scores. A main innovative element of our approach is
that it jointly extracts and stores all attributes of the event as a single
representation (quintuple). Using a purpose-built test set we demonstrate that
our supervised learning approach can achieve 25% improvement in F1-score over
baseline methods that consider the earliest, the latest or the most frequent

Clip-art or design: exploring the challenges of multimodal texts for writing centres in higher education
This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis in Southern African Linguistics and Applied Language Studies on 30 January 2012, available online: http://www.tandfonline.com/10.2989/16073614.2011.651938.In higher education, genre theorists and academic literacy practitioners have examined evolving genres, but they have not specifically focused on the multimodal nature of texts that students need to produce for assessment purposes. This paper explores the increasing influence and incorporation of the visual into academic texts, and ways of enabling student access to academic discourse in a multimodal environment. Taking a multimodal perspective on 'academic literacies', it looks at examples from different disciplines and provides guidelines on how writing centres can assist students with the designs of their multimodal texts in a changing representational landscape. In particular, it focuses on helping students with predominantly visual texts, integrating visuals into written assignments, and ways of writing about images
