    Optical Image Blending for Underwater Mosaics

    Typical problems for creation of consistent underwater mosaic are misalignment and inhomogeneous illumination of the image frames, which causes visible seams and consequently complicates post-processing of the mosaics such as object recognition and shape extraction. Two recently developed image blending methods were explored in the literature: gradient domain stitching and graph-cut method, and they allow for improvement of illumination inconsistency and ghosting effects, respectively. However, due to the specifics of underwater imagery, these two methods cannot be used within a straightforward manner. In this paper, a new improved blending algorithm is proposed based on these two methods. By comparing with the previous methods from a perceptual point of view and as a potential input for pattern recognition algorithms, our results show an improvement in decreasing the mosaic degradation due to feature doubling and rapid illumination change

    The geometry of single-viewpoint panoramas is well understood: multiple pictures taken from the same viewpoint may be stitched together into a consistent panorama mosaic. By contrast, when the point of view changes or when the scene changes (e.g., due to objects moving) no consistent mosaic may be obtained, unless the structure of the scene is very special. Artists have explored this problem and demonstrated that geometrical consistency is not the only criterion for success: incorporating multiple view points in space and time into the same panorama may produce compelling and informative pictures. We explore this avenue and suggest an approach to automating the construction of mosaics from images taken from multiple view points into a single panorama. Rather than looking at 3D scene consistency we look at image consistency. Our approach is based on optimizing a cost function that keeps into account image-to-image consistency which is measured on point-features and along picture boundaries. The optimization explicitly considers occlusion between pictures. We illustrate our ideas with a number of experiments on collections of images of objects and outdoor scenes

    Retrieval and Registration of Long-Range Overlapping Frames for Scalable Mosaicking of In Vivo Fetoscopy

    Purpose: The standard clinical treatment of Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome consists in the photo-coagulation of undesired anastomoses located on the placenta which are responsible to a blood transfer between the two twins. While being the standard of care procedure, fetoscopy suffers from a limited field-of-view of the placenta resulting in missed anastomoses. To facilitate the task of the clinician, building a global map of the placenta providing a larger overview of the vascular network is highly desired. Methods: To overcome the challenging visual conditions inherent to in vivo sequences (low contrast, obstructions or presence of artifacts, among others), we propose the following contributions: (i) robust pairwise registration is achieved by aligning the orientation of the image gradients, and (ii) difficulties regarding long-range consistency (e.g. due to the presence of outliers) is tackled via a bag-of-word strategy, which identifies overlapping frames of the sequence to be registered regardless of their respective location in time. Results: In addition to visual difficulties, in vivo sequences are characterised by the intrinsic absence of gold standard. We present mosaics motivating qualitatively our methodological choices and demonstrating their promising aspect. We also demonstrate semi-quantitatively, via visual inspection of registration results, the efficacy of our registration approach in comparison to two standard baselines. Conclusion: This paper proposes the first approach for the construction of mosaics of placenta in in vivo fetoscopy sequences. Robustness to visual challenges during registration and long-range temporal consistency are proposed, offering first positive results on in vivo data for which standard mosaicking techniques are not applicable.Comment: Accepted for publication in International Journal of Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery (IJCARS

    3D modeling of indoor environments by a mobile platform with a laser scanner and panoramic camera

    One major challenge of 3DTV is content acquisition. Here, we present a method to acquire a realistic, visually convincing D model of indoor environments based on a mobile platform that is equipped with a laser range scanner and a panoramic camera. The data of the 2D laser scans are used to solve the simultaneous lo- calization and mapping problem and to extract walls. Textures for walls and floor are built from the images of a calibrated panoramic camera. Multiresolution blending is used to hide seams in the gen- erated textures. The scene is further enriched by 3D-geometry cal- culated from a graph cut stereo technique. We present experimental results from a moderately large real environment.

    Blending techniques for underwater photomosaics

    The creation of consistent underwater photomosaics is typically hampered by local misalignments and inhomogeneous illumination of the image frames, which introduce visible seams that complicate post processing of the mosaics for object recognition and shape extraction. In this thesis, methods are proposed to improve blending techniques for underwater photomosaics and the results are compared with traditional methods. Five specific techniques drawn from various areas of image processing, computer vision, and computer graphics have been tested: illumination correction based on the median mosaic, thin plate spline warping, perspective warping, graph-cut applied in the gradient domain and in the wavelet domain. A combination of the first two methods yields globally homogeneous underwater photomosaics with preserved continuous features. Further improvements are obtained with the graph-cut technique applied in the spatial domain

    Automated Image Registration And Mosaicking For Multi-Sensor Images Acquired By A Miniature Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Platform

    Algorithms for automatic image registration and mosaicking are developed for a miniature Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (MINI-UAV) platform, assembled by Air-O-Space International (AOSI) L.L.C.. Three cameras onboard this MINI-UAV platform acquire images in a single frame simultaneously at green (550nm), red (650 nm), and near infrared (820nm) wavelengths, but with shifting and rotational misalignment. The area-based method is employed in the developed algorithms for control point detection, which is applicable when no prominent feature details are present in image scenes. Because the three images to be registered have different spectral characteristics, region of interest determination and control point selection are the two key steps that ensure the quality of control points. Affine transformation is adopted for spatial transformation, followed by bilinear interpolation for image resampling. Mosaicking is conducted between adjacent frames after three-band co-registration. Pre-introducing the rotation makes the area-based method feasible when the rotational misalignment cannot be ignored. The algorithms are tested on three image sets collected at Stennis Space Center, Greenwood, and Oswalt in Mississippi. Manual evaluation confirms the effectiveness of the developed algorithms. The codes are converted into a software package, which is executable under the Microsoft Windows environment of personal computer platforms without the requirement of MATLAB or other special software support for commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) product. The near real-time decision-making support is achievable with final data after its installation into the ground control station. The final products are color-infrared (CIR) composite and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) images, which are used in agriculture, forestry, and environmental monitoring

    Automating joiners

    Pictures taken from different view points cannot be stitched into a geometrically consistent mosaic, unless the structure of the scene is very special. However, geometrical consistency is not the only criterion for success: incorporating multiple view points into the same picture may produce compelling and informative representations. A multi viewpoint form of visual expression that has recently become highly popular is that of joiners (a term coined by artist David Hockney). Joiners are compositions where photographs are layered on a 2D canvas, with some photographs occluding others and boundaries fully visible. Composing joiners is currently a tedious manual process, especially when a great number of photographs is involved. We are thus interested in automating their construction. Our approach is based on optimizing a cost function encouraging image-to-image consistency which is measured on point-features and along picture boundaries. The optimization looks for consistency in the 2D composition rather than 3D geometrical scene consistency and explicitly considers occlusion between pictures. We illustrate our ideas with a number of experiments on collections of images of objects, people, and outdoor scenes
